Gibson Les Paul Traditional Pro II '50s Neck Electric Guitar (108261975)
Availability:

A gigging musician's tool box with '50s slim-tapered neck, coil-split humbuckers and a boost circuit.

Taking design and visual cues from the Les Pauls of the '80s and '90s, the Les Paul Traditional Pro II features powerful pickups with push/push for coil splits and boost circuit, '50s neck profile, Grover locking tuners, antique binding, period-correct pickguard, vintage Gibson top hat knobs, and the revolutionary Plek set up.

With all the fat, sweet, snarling Les Paul tone that purists love, the new Gibson Les Paul Standard Traditional Pro II sports a mahogany body with a thick maple cap for the perfect blend of warmth and clarity. The top is finished in high-gloss lacquer, while the back, sides, and neck have a smooth satin finish that feels great and lets the wood resonate fully. Each Les Paul Traditional also comes with Gibson USA's standard black snakeskin case.

Period-Correct Pickguard
The creme-colored pickguard has been a Les Paul staple dating back to the models of the late 1950s and the early 1960s. Many players, however, removed the pickguard from their Les Pauls to show off the beauty of the flame maple tops, prompting Gibson to stop installing the pickguard altogether. During the 1980s and 1990s, Gibson began reinstalling the pickguard in the factory, and the Les Pauls from this era once again arrived in stores bearing the classic, creme-colored pickguard. The Les Paul Traditional comes equipped with a period-correct pickguard, designed to protect the maple top.

Pickups: Neck - '57 Classic; Bridge - Super '57
Among the qualities that make Gibson's original "Patent Applied For" humbucking pickups so unique are the subtle variations between coil windings. For the first few years of their productions—1955 to 1961—Gibson's PAF humbuckers were wound using imprecise machines, resulting in pickups with slightly different output and tone. The '57 Classic and Super '57 pickups are the result of Gibson's drive to capture and recreate this characteristic. Introduced in 1992, the '57 Classic at the neck provides warm, full tone with a balanced response, packing that classic Gibson PAF humbucker crunch, inspired by those original PAFs that received a few extra turns of wire. The Super '57 bridge pickup debuts in the Trad Pro with a wider frequency response and increased output.

Both are made by Gibson to the exact same specs as the original PAFs, including Alnico II magnets, nickel-plated pole pieces, nickel slugs, maple spacers, and vintage-style, 2-conductor braided wiring. Gibson added poly-coated wiring, which improves consistency by eliminating thick or thin spots on the wiring, and wax potting, which removes all internal air space and any chance of microphonic feedback.

Both pickups offer coil splitting for single-coil sounds and a boost circuit via push/push switching in the volume controls. “Straight Split” coil-splitting offers pure single coil tone and differs from LP Standards and Studios that have a “Super Tap” coil-tap, which still has a small amount of humbucking. The boost circuit has a user-adjustable 10-dB boost for added power and frequency range for solos, single-note picking and dirty chording (depending on amp settings) and features true bypass that disengages the boost completely, ensuring pure passive Les Paul tone.

Revolutionary Plek Set Up
The Les Paul Traditional is the first model from Gibson USA to utilize the revolutionary Plek machine in setting up the guitar. The Plek is a German-made, computer-controlled machine that carefully measures each fret, along with the fingerboard height under each string, and then automatically dresses each fret, virtually eliminating string buzz and greatly improving the overall playability of the guitar. This pioneering process does in minutes what it takes a luthier several hours—sometimes even days—to accomplish. Every fret is accurately aligned, and the guitar is properly intonated, leaving the instrument "Plek'd" and amazingly playable.

Antique Binding
To see the process of putting the binding on the Les Paul Traditional is to really appreciate the effort and attention that Gibson puts into each instrument. A lone craftsman will carefully glue and fit 2 pieces of binding around the entire body of a Les Paul. He then winds a single, very long piece of narrow cloth around the entire body until the entire surface is nearly covered. The body is then hung to dry for a full 24 hours before it is unwrapped and moved into the next phase of production. It has been done the same way for over 100 years. Some question the value of adding binding, but Gibson believes it is a fundamental part of our rich guitar-making history. The binding adds elegance to the Les Paul Standard, and helps protect the edges of the body. The neck binding is installed over the fret ends, which eliminates sharp fret edges and provides for a smooth neck and easier playability.

  • Hurry and Get One!!

As reviewed by Cole Edmonson on 3/25/2013

I just got mine at my local guitar center. Let me start off by saying what an amazing guitar this is. The sound is amazing. The coil taps are true single coil sound. The volume knobs are very responsive if you like to mess with that kind of stuff. No setup needed, i like my action very low and it came out of the box playing like a dream to me. I found out that these guitars are out of production now but some guitar centers still have them in stock. I compared this to the traditional plus, and this one had it beat. More sustain, and clarity. Hurry and get one before they are all gone. Gibson won't make anyone anymore. I already tried. This is the most versatile guitar out there.

  • This LP did it for me in many more ways than one!

As reviewed by PHILIP ROBERTS on 4/15/2013

I have had more than a few Les Paul guitars over the years, from '68 onward, and always felt they were all good, but eventually got tired of the individual monotone voice of each one of them. My last Historic was stunning to look at, but had a hole in the mids that never pleased me. Intrigued by the options listed for the Les Paul Traditional Pro II, I decided to hunt one down with a 60?s neck, since I like slim necks. Found one in a GC not too far from home and it was pretty nice. Very good build quality. Then the sales person asked if I would consider a used 50?s neck Trad Pro II. Sure, why not? Wow, the cherry sunburst looked nice (could use a little more yellow in the middle...minor thing), and the dark cherry back is just gorgeous, but as soon as it lay in my hands I knew this was something special. The 50?s neck is absolutely PERFECT. Fits any hand just right with just enough flat areas on the shoulders and back to grab onto, and rock solid in stability. 40 years and many necks later, this was the best I ever felt. But the whole guitar was sturdy and had a clear resonant tone to it. It was almost acoustic, but lower in volume being solid and all. Still loud for a solid body guitar. The fretboard was so nice and a bit flatter than other LP?s. Very clean and great binding work. PLEKed frets and nut made the action almost too low. No complaints! Fast action and no buzzing. Didn?t even need to plug it in, I was sold. When I got home and put it into my rig, my jaw dropped to the floor. There it is! The perfect old wood sounding LP! But wait, there is more. Cranked bridge volume and it is a metal crunch monster. I never expected it could do that. Dial back and it is pure old school Les Paul. This Super 57 pickup is great, but what about the neck Classic 57? Oh yeah?Nice clear jazzy tones. Cleans up nice. And both tone controls are just right (for a change). Took a look inside, and the caps look like tantalum blue drops. Honky in the bridge and woman tone in the neck. Dead on and no need to change them. I may want to find those and put some in my other guitars. Good choice, Gibson. OK, now it is time to try these switching pot options. Well that was sort of neat on the coil splits, but I noticed they wired the inside coils to remain hot instead of the usual outside coils. By this time I was truly in love with this guitar, so I wasted no time breaking out the solder iron and flipping the red and black wires to move the hot coils to the outside positions. There ya go! Fantastic single coil tones, and the combo pickup tones are out of this world clear and chirpy. I can do a Strat neck tone, or a Tele bridge or combo tone that sounds convincing. Mixed single coil and humbucker combos are almost limitless in uniqueness. How about this boost circuit? I didn?t think I needed it, since my rig has plenty of gain, but I found it to be handy to kick the amp a little on lower volume settings without changing the guitar knobs. The tone gets a little thinner with this boost on, so it can make your single coil tones very Strat-like. Full-out dimed bridge with the boost is enough gain to wake any dead amp! This guitar is so versatile, and has so many tone options, that it is my main gig guitar out of many. My Robot V with the first generation Tronical system is a great backup, but lacks the single coil options (needed more knobs for push/pull pots). What about that 4th knob? Nothing there? Gotta do something about that! I changed that to another switching pot and made it a bridge pickup phase reversal switch. Now the guitar is a Trad Pro III (haha). These combos get strange, but if you like strange Indy music, this is for you. What I use this for mostly is the inside single coil option, which quacks a bit like ?Sweet Home?. This guitar is almost the complete tool kit in one package. So what else can I do to trick this out even more? Well, if you use one guitar and need to change tunings, a Tronical Tune Min-Etune system is a must, so I ordered one to make this guitar the workhorse monster that can do it all. About the only other thing I can think of to make this guitar a total one-guitar solution is an acoustic pickup mounted inside and wired to a stereo jack (to the ring contact) for two separate outputs (since I?m out of pot switching options). I could feed the two signals to my rig on one stereo cable and use MIDI switching to change to the acoustic sound with my pedalboard. Would this make it the ultimate tricked-out Trad Pro IV? (haha) I?m actually looking for pickup options now. If someone made a drop-in piezo that had a precision EQ curve of a pre-war Martin D45, I would be in absolute heaven! How about a Floyd Rose? OK, ok, I went too far, but someone may like that. I have other guitars with that option. Wouldn?t work with a Min-Etune anyway. The bottom line on this guitar is that Gibson USA is really getting it together and producing outstanding guitars these days. Good wood and tight construction are the norm now. They look and feel very solid, and are miles better then just a few years ago. But the tone is there and always amazes me every time I play this guitar. There is no shortage of different voices on this guitar, but the classic LP tone is right there, as well. No Les Paul I ever owned ever did that. Go try one, and I bet you will be as surprised as I was. This guitar is a keeper for life. Note to Gibson: Think about those other options I mentioned above. The ultimate ?old meets new meets acoustic? guitar is right there. It is so close I can taste it!

  • Gibson LP Traditional FTW

As reviewed by Matthew George on 2/25/2013

First off, the finish on this guitar is beautiful, the picture does not do it justice. Second the sound quality is amazing, Its got great low end and awesome screaming highs. I play it through a frontman 212r and this guitar makes that amp sing. I went into my "local" guitar center looking to upgrade from my Gibson Lp studio, and asked the expert there to give me some options in the $1500-$2000 price range and he gave me this one. I plugged it in and fell in love with it. I know it is quite a bit of an investment but if you are looking for a good quality, good sounding guitar that is going to last a lifetime this is the one. I would recomend it to anyone.
