Product Information

A gigging man's Les Paul with '60s slim-tapered neck and coil-split humbuckers.

Taking design and visual cues from the Les Pauls of the '80s and '90s, the Les Paul Traditional Pro features BurstBucker 3 and '57 Classic pickups with coil-splitting, '60s neck profile, Grover locking tuners, antique binding, period-correct pickguard, vintage Gibson top hat knobs, and the revolutionary Plek set up.

With all the fat, sweet, snarling Les Paul tone that purists love, the new Gibson Les Paul Standard Traditional Pro sports a non-chambered mahogany body with a thick maple cap for the perfect blend of warmth and clarity. The top is finished in high-gloss lacquer, while the back, sides, and neck have a smooth satin finish that feels great and lets the wood resonate fully. Each Les Paul Traditional also comes with Gibson USA's standard black snakeskin case.

Period-Correct Pickguard
The creme-colored pickguard has been a Les Paul staple dating back to the models of the late 1950s and the early 1960s. Many players, however, removed the pickguard from their Les Pauls to show off the beauty of the flame maple tops, moving Gibson to stop installing the pickguard altogether. During the 1980s and 1990s, Gibson began reinstalling the pickguard in the factory, and the Les Pauls from this era once again arrived in stores bearing the classic, creme-colored pickguard. The Les Paul Traditional comes equipped with a period-correct pickguard, designed to protect the maple top.

Pickups: Neck - '57 Classic; Bridge - BurstBucker 3
Among the qualities that make Gibson's original "Patent Applied For" humbucking pickups so unique are the subtle variations between coil windings. For the first few years of their productions—1955 to 1961—Gibson's PAF humbuckers were wound using imprecise machines, resulting in pickups with slightly different output and tone. The BurstBucker 3 and '57 Classic Plus pickups are the result of Gibson drive to capture and recreate this characteristic. Introduced in 1992, the '57 Classic provides warm, full tone with a balanced response, packing that classic Gibson PAF humbucker crunch, inspired by those original PAFs that received a few extra turns of wire. Both are made by Gibson to the exact same specs as the original PAFs, including Alnico II magnets, nickel-plated pole pieces, nickel slugs, maple spacers, and vintage-style, two-conductor braided wiring. Gibson added poly-coated wiring, which improves consistency by eliminating thick or thin spots on the wiring, and wax potting, which removes all internal air space and any chance of microphonic feedback. Both pickups offer coil-splitting for single-coil sounds via push/pull switching in the volume controls.

Revolutionary Plek Set Up
The Les Paul Traditional is the first model from Gibson USA to utilize the revolutionary Plek machine in setting up the guitar. The Plek is a German-made, computer-controlled machine that carefully measures each fret, along with the fingerboard height under each string, and then automatically dresses each fret, virtually eliminating string buzz and greatly improving the overall playability of the guitar. This pioneering process does in minutes what it takes a luthier several hours—sometimes even days—to accomplish. Every fret is accurately aligned, and the guitar is properly intonated, leaving the instrument "Plek'd" and amazingly playable.

Antique Binding
To see the process of putting the binding on the Les Paul Traditional is to really appreciate the effort and attention that Gibson puts into each instrument. A lone craftsman will carefully glue and fit two pieces of binding around the entire body of a Les Paul. He then winds a single, very long piece of narrow cloth around the entire body until the entire surface is nearly covered. The body is then hung to dry for a full 24 hours before it is unwrapped and moved into the next phase of production. It has been done the same way for over 100 years. Some question the value of adding binding, but Gibson believes it is a fundamental part of our rich guitar-making history. The binding adds elegance to the Les Paul Standard, and helps protect the edges of the body. The neck binding is installed over the fret ends, which eliminates sharp fret edges and provides for a smooth neck and easier playability.

NEW REVIEW - Phenomenal

hands down the greatest thing I've ever played. The feel, the taps, the weight, its all there. It all combines to add a uniqueness adding a level of enjoyment to playing I hadn't ever experienced before. The slim neck allows a weekend warrior like me to play for hours without taxing the hand as much and it literally opened up a whole new world as I see much more of the playing field so to speak.

Wow,What to say. Played alot of Standards before and was a fan of the 50's neck. However, this one in cherry sunburst 60's neck plays superb. The spliting coils give this LP a players tone heaven. Sustain and a satin neck are not to be left out either.I can handle the wieght as I sit mostly to play. You won't go wrong with this bad boy.Clean or dirty it's a blast. Great job Gibson!

Finally the perfect Les Paul

Over the years Gibson has tried so many different things on LP's but they finally built the perfect one for me and probably for you too. Let me run it down: 1. Non-chambered body. The reason LP's always had killer sustain is the thick mahogany body has tons of resonance. 2. 60's slim neck. IMO the best neck they've ever made. Thin and very fast. 3. Burstbucker 3/57 classic pickups - An outstanding combo. BB3 can cover glassy cleans through thrash metal. The 57 classic is so smooth and produces really thick smooth creamy distortion. 4. Push/pull knob (coil tapping) - As if the tone wasn't already perfect you get even more tweaking options. One of my faves is toggle switch in middle position, neck pup with knob pulled, bridge pup knob normal. I use that to play Lenny and it's as sweet and glassy as the finest strat. 5. Satin finish on back - Very fast finish. I've played where my hand got really sweaty and it's still fast. For years guys had to purposely dull the neck finish. Not with this LP. 6. Grover locking tuners. The old fashioned LP tuners stayed in tune great but string changes sucked as they do with any non-locking tuners. These tuners stay in tune and string changes are a snap. 7. Value - Of the new LP models I personally think this one is best AND it's hundreds of dollars less than the chambered-body models. They're best one is also their cheapest. Go figure. 8. Tone - You have to mention this. My god this baby oozes with tone. Glassy highs, thick creamy distortion, massive brain melting distortion. You can get it all. Even a cheap SS amp will sound great if you play this through it. 9. Setup - The Plek'd frets are actually awesome. I thought that would be a marketing gimmick but it makes a difference. As if their action wasn't already the best ever, now it's even better. All in all I think it's the best LP I've ever seen Gibson put out. I saved the money and sold a lot of other gear to buy it and I'm not disappointed. I'm 42, been playing since I was 10 and I've played them all. This is as good as any of the all-time greats. It's a limited run just for guitar center and musician's friend so I'd get one before they're gone. If you've ever wanted a real LP this is for you.

Great players guitar

I've played for 40 years and have owned 70+ guitars.I do my own set ups and own 10 instruments at the present time. This is a wonderful instrument .It atays in tune extremely well, the single coil function sound great, and it plays incredibly well.I have the action set at 1/32 at the 12th fret high E and 1/16 at the 12th fret low E with out any relief and it doesn't fret out or buzz. This is one guitar I'll never sell.

Gibson Hit A Home Run With the Pro

Finally, and I do mean finally, Gibson has struck a bullseye with the LP Standard Traditional Pro. This instrument in a Heritage Sunburst Cherry is a dream to behold. I still find it hard to believe all the features this model has: coilsplitting/locking keys/awesome burstbuster III and 57 vintage pickups. Even if it wasn't the best value for the dollar (which it is), the sum total of what's on this instrument should will create a run on the bank!! AWESOME JOB GIBSON

God blessed Texas, an this Les Paul!

I've played many chambered body LP's in my day and the sustain and tone does not compare to an un-chambered body. I play lots of country and southern rock... country is traditionally played on a telecaster, and southern rock is payed usually on a les paul...both guitars will run you well over a grand each, but the split coil design allows you to plal like you own both. uthe tone is orgasmic, and it is the greatest feeling guitar i've ever held. 100 stars if possible. Thank you gibson!!!

Oh My Gawd!!!!

This guitar has everything I've been looking for wrapped up with a pretty bow. It has the double-single coil pickups, it has locking tuners, and the best part - UNCHAMBERED!!!! THis is just a truly amazing guitar with unbearable sustain. I played this in guitarcenter and hit a high E (12 fret 1st string) with a little distortion and it sustained for at least 30 seconds. THis is just an amazing guitar and I highly recommend it to anyone.

Basic Gibson

This guitar is.... a basic Gibson. It is the guitar the people have dreamed of and wanted for their whole lives but Gibson has let the people down with their ways of building their guitars cheaper and cheaper over the years. Now im just telling anyone out there now, do NOT buy this guitar because you want the split coil pickups. It does not have a significant change in the tone but it does have an impact. This would be a very pleasurable, enjoyable, likeable guitar if it didnt cost half of your savings. If Gibson would open their eyes and make a guitar that has heart, has a price that is reasonable, and has quality then they would, once again, be the best guitar company in the buisness.

Amazing!!!!

Amazing guitar! Before buying this guitar I had looked at a bunch of others. I was really focusing on the Billie Joe Les Paul but once I played the Pro Traditional it blew my mind away. This guitar has so many sounds in it. I can get that great rock n roll sound, and still get a great blues sound, and with a little distortion you get some great punk. The split coil pickups are definately an amazing design...I love them. And not to mention how sexy this thing looks. I have it in Vintage Sunburst and looks absolutely beautiful. I definately recommend getting this guitar if you are willing to splurge a little.

Exchanged this for a Standard

I have been playing for over a quarter of a century, and in that time, I've owned MANY guitars. Some great, some ok, and some, just pure junk. There was a time when I had over 20 guitars (electric and acoustic). At that time, maybe 1 or 2 were great, 1 or 2 were ok, and the rest..junk. So years have gone by and I decided I would rather have just a few great guitars than a bunch of junk...quality over quantity I guess. One guitar that I always wanted was a Les Paul...a real Les Paul...not some Epiphone or Studio Les Paul (no offense to those instruments)...when I saw that Guitar Center had a special edition Les Paul "Standard Traditional Pro" for under 2K, I figured, here's my chance. Well...I got it...and from day one had problems with it. It wouldn't stay in tune...and the sound really wasn't on par with my other guitars...(a PRS custom 22 and an Ibanez Prestige Team J Craft - don't expect me to remember the exact model of that Ibanez, as it's all numbers and letters ;) Anyway..I don't want to write a book here...but in the end, no matter what I did, I couldn't keep this thing in tune..even with the locking tuners. I tried many different sets of strings, nut lube on the nut and bridge, even chap stick and pencil lead. Everything you could do to try and keep this thing tuned up, I tried...no luck. Still...for the few minutes that it was in tune, it certainly wasn't a bad guitar. It felt great, sounded pretty good, and looked beautiful. So it was with reluctance that I decided to bring it back and exchange for something else. To guitar center's credit, they didn't give me a hard time at all...matter of fact they were apologetic and helped get me something else. In the end, I picked up a standard plus...I laid down an extra $600 and have no regrets. It's just a nicer guitar, sounds better, looks better, and most importantly..it actually stays in tune. I don't think I'm going to be as harsh as the previous review...but I definitely can't give it 5 stars either. Who knows...maybe I just had a lemon.
