A gigging man's Les Paul with '60s slim-tapered neck and coil-split humbuckers.

Taking design and visual cues from the Les Pauls of the '80s and '90s, the Les Paul Traditional Pro features BurstBucker 3 and '57 Classic pickups with push/pull coil splits, '60s neck profile, Grover locking tuners, antique binding, period-correct pickguard, vintage Gibson top hat knobs, and the revolutionary Plek set up.With all the fat, sweet, snarling Les Paul tone that purists love, the new Gibson Les Paul Standard Traditional Pro sports a mahogany body with a thick maple cap for the perfect blend of warmth and clarity. The top is finished in high-gloss lacquer, while the back, sides, and neck have a smooth satin finish that feels great and lets the wood resonate fully. Each Les Paul Traditional also comes with Gibson USA's standard black snakeskin case.Period-Correct PickguardThe creme-colored pickguard has been a Les Paul staple dating back to the models of the late 1950s and the early 1960s. Many players, however, removed the pickguard from their Les Pauls to show off the beauty of the flame maple tops, prompting Gibson to stop installing the pickguard altogether. During the 1980s and 1990s, Gibson began reinstalling the pickguard in the factory, and the Les Pauls from this era once again arrived in stores bearing the classic, creme-colored pickguard. The Les Paul Traditional comes equipped with a period-correct pickguard, designed to protect the maple top.Pickups: Neck - '57 Classic; Bridge - BurstBucker 3Among the qualities that make Gibson's original "Patent Applied For" humbucking pickups so unique are the subtle variations between coil windings. For the first few years of their productions—1955 to 1961—Gibson's PAF humbuckers were wound using imprecise machines, resulting in pickups with slightly different output and tone. The BurstBucker 3 and '57 Classic Plus pickups are the result of Gibson's drive to capture and recreate this characteristic. Introduced in 1992, the '57 Classic provides warm, full tone with a balanced response, packing that classic Gibson PAF humbucker crunch, inspired by those original PAFs that received a few extra turns of wire. Both are made by Gibson to the exact same specs as the original PAFs, including Alnico II magnets, nickel-plated pole pieces, nickel slugs, maple spacers, and vintage-style, 2-conductor braided wiring. Gibson added poly-coated wiring, which improves consistency by eliminating thick or thin spots on the wiring, and wax potting, which removes all internal air space and any chance of microphonic feedback. Both pickups offer coil splitting for single-coil sounds via push/pull switching in the volume controls.Revolutionary Plek Set UpThe Les Paul Traditional is the first model from Gibson USA to utilize the revolutionary Plek machine in setting up the guitar. The Plek is a German-made, computer-controlled machine that carefully measures each fret, along with the fingerboard height under each string, and then automatically dresses each fret, virtually eliminating string buzz and greatly improving the overall playability of the guitar. This pioneering process does in minutes what it takes a luthier several hours—sometimes even days—to accomplish. Every fret is accurately aligned, and the guitar is properly intonated, leaving the instrument "Plek'd" and amazingly playable.Antique BindingTo see the process of putting the binding on the Les Paul Traditional is to really appreciate the effort and attention that Gibson puts into each instrument. A lone craftsman will carefully glue and fit 2 pieces of binding around the entire body of a Les Paul. He then winds a single, very long piece of narrow cloth around the entire body until the entire surface is nearly covered. The body is then hung to dry for a full 24 hours before it is unwrapped and moved into the next phase of production. It has been done the same way for over 100 years. Some question the value of adding binding, but Gibson believes it is a fundamental part of our rich guitar-making history. The binding adds elegance to the Les Paul Standard, and helps protect the edges of the body. The neck binding is installed over the fret ends, which eliminates sharp fret edges and provides for a smooth neck and easier playability.Check the drop-down menu to the right to select colors and/or other options.

  • awesome instrument

As reviewed by Joshua D. Lee on 2/16/2011

When I was 16 my dad bought me my first les paul and i loved it! It was a pretty special guitar because it was a gift from my dad so you can imagine that when it got knocked over by a 2 year old that i was pretty sad! But then her parents bought me a new one and this is the guitar i picked out! it didn't take long to get over it! haha! Gibson did awesome with this guitar. i love the split coil pick ups! its awesome to be able to get the sound that i want! i really like the slick back on the neck also! it makes sliding up and down the neck alot easier! if you are a serious musician and are in the market for a nice guitar you can't go wrong!

  • The Most Versatile LP Gibson Makes IMHO!!!

As reviewed by RainmakerNC on 12/6/2010

I have been eyeing a Gibson LP for quite a while. I picked this one off the wall at GC in Raleigh and I fell in love. The coil-tap is sweet... but it isn't perfect... and to be honest if you are truly looking for that single-coil tone then just buy a Stratocaster. What it does provide is the ability to gig with one guitar and get darn close to that true single-coil sound when you need it. The finish is beautiful... I have the Vintage Sunburst (pictured) and I love it. The PUPs are bold, cutting and pristine. They shine on solos... they just have that ability to cut through the band. Many of my band members thought I spent much more than the retail price. The neck is amazing... smooth and comfortable. The binding is beautiful and adds to the authentic look and feel of the Les Paul. The guitar is heavy... don't discount that if you play long sets. I am used to a relatively heavy guitar. This LP isn't chambered... which is something that I enjoy. I feel that chambering, although reduces weight, calms down sustain. This baby will hold a note while you grab a sandwich and when you get back it will still be humming. The overall sound of the guitar is everything you would expect from a Les Paul. Every note shines through out of this instrument. I play it through a Mesa/Boogie Mark V and it basically sounds as perfect as I had imagined it would in my head. Tone-galore kids... stop reading reviews and buy this bad-boy... you won't regret it.

  • Gibson's "Hot Rod" Les Paul

As reviewed by John B. on 5/16/2010

When I purchase anything, I ALWAYS do research. I have some vintage Gibson instruments and wanted to replace the Les Paul Custom I formally used. So many changes and choices out there, but I kept returning to Les Paul's. I love my strats because of the sounds they produce but, once again kept researching Les Paul's. I played many Les Paul models. When I discovered the Les Paul Traditional Pro, it was a no brainer. I waited until there was a sale at the number one guitar store in the world, Guitar Center, and then played a few. I purchased a tobacco sunburst Traditional Pro. I've waited five month's before reviewing here on this site. The Les Paul Traditional Pro offers more diversity than any other Gibson I've played except maybe my 72 Les Paul Signature Gold Top. The pick ups are phenominal and the switching is incredible. My Pro can get thick full jazz sounds or thin telecaster sounds and lots in between. The action is FANTASTIC! I wanted a SOLID BODY and got one. Nothing chambered or weight relieved here. It's comfortable and it just fits me. I can play it for hours. When I play out, I play it through a Bose L1 with 2 base bins and Digitech GNX4. My guitar is flawless. The plec neck is great and the action is smooth as silk. My associates are always looking to use it. The guitar is making me a better player. Lots of people noy only look at it, but love the sound it produces. So you've heard of the "hot rod Lincoln" ........ Gibson has produced a "REAL HOT ROD LES PAUL." Thank You Gibson, John
