      Gibson J-15 Acoustic-Electric Guitar (J04483)
Availability:

US-made from all-solid tonewoods with dovetail neckjoint, scalloped bracing and L.R. Baggs electronics.

The J-15 features the same round-shoulder body shape of Gibson's J-45, aka "The Workhorse", an incredibly popular acoustic that has been one of Gibson's best-selling guitars since it's introduction in 1942. With it's electronics and high-quality body construction, the J-15 can easily become your new workhorse as it can handle the demands of both intimate settings and larger venues.

Handcrafted exclusively at Gibson's Bozeman, Montana facility, the J-15 is all about North American solid tonewoods, with a Sitka spruce top which provides you with ample velocity, and sustainable American walnut back and sides which possesses some of the warmth of rosewood while adding a dash of mahogany's presence, all without the extra weight. This 24.75" scale acoustic-electric also features a neck-to-body dovetail joint secured with hide glue to ensure the resonance transfer from strings to body stays at a premium level throughout the life of the guitar. The J-15's radiused body with scalloped X-bracing provides the kind of projection and clarity that you expect in a more expensive model. The hand-sprayed nitrocellulose lacquer finish not only lets the tone of the J-15 to mature with age, but also allows the unique character and beauty of the guitar's woods to shine through.

When it's time to plug in, the J-15 will spoil your amp and ears even more thanks to L.R. Baggs Element electronics. Unlike typical undersaddle acoustic guitar pickups that are dependent on string compression for their sound, the Element was engineered to mirror the soundboard’s actual movement as you play. At the heart of the pickup, a flexible film sensor only .002 thick picks up the guitar’s most delicate nuances. Tracking the motion of the top rather than a direct string attack suppresses “quack” caused by compression and unlocks the Element’s unrivaled dynamic range. The pickup’s minimalist construction lessens any influence on the acoustic properties and creates an intimate coupling between the pickup and guitar for the highest fidelity possible.

Other appointments of the J-15 include a double-ring rosette with unique abalone composite accent, a rectangular walnut bridge with a mother-of-pearl dot inlay, a walnut fingerboard with mother-of-pearl dot inlays, Mini Grover tuners (nickel-plated), a teardrop tortoise pick guard, a 1.725" tusq nut, and a traditional AJ headstock. You also receive a Gibson Standard Hardshell Case with black Tolex exterior and a blue fabric interior and Gibson's Gold Warranty (covers the guitar from defects in material and workmanship for the life of the original purchase, subject to limitations).

Whether you're about to embark on a tour or just want to step up your game with a high-quality USA-made instrument, you'd be hard-pressed to find better deals or better guitars, than the J-15.

  • Impressive features at this price

As reviewed by Christopher Davis on 4/29/2014

Gibson has really done a great job with the J-35 and now the J-15 in making their acoustics more accessible, price wise. I also applaud their use of sustainable woods. While this guitar's walnut back, sides and fingerboard and maple neck are non-traditional by Gibson's standards, these materials have been used in stringed instruments for hundreds of years. Walnut is a great tone wood. The Gibson J-45 slope shoulder shape is iconic in that it produces that unmistakable Gibson sound. Even in walnut, the J-15 definitely produces the Gibson sound - woody and warm. I find this guitar strong in the midrange and low end. The highs are not quite as complex as is produced by a J-45, but they are focused and articulate nonetheless. This guitar really thumps when driven hard and does not go muddy at all. It seems there is a tremendous amount of headroom built in. I really like that in a dreadnaught. The J-15 sounds great as a flat picker and also finger style. It is very well rounded and versatile. I was very impressed with the tone and playability of this guitar. I had the opportunity to play a J-15 back to back with 2 J-35s, a J-45 and a J-29 and the J-15 more than holds its own against its higher priced counterparts in tone as well as looks. I was prepared to spend more than the J-15's $1499.00 list price when shopping for a Gibson acoustic, but I kept coming back to the J-15 because it just sounds great. The guitar is also stunning to look at. The 3 piece maple neck on walnut and spruce makes for a unique and beautiful instrument. The lacquer finish was just about flawless on mine save for a couple very small fisheyes on the back of the glossy neck. The fingerboard on mine had a couple of very minor rough spots around the 17th fret, but these were barely noticeable. I removed them, but that was more from my own OCD than anything. Overall, I am very pleased with the fit and finish on my guitar. The set-up out of the box was close to the way I like it. I lowered the action a bit, but that was simply my personal preference. The guitar was very playable as is. I typically don't play plugged in, so I am very happy with the unobtrusive electronics. If you didn't know the guitar has a pickup, you wouldn't even notice. I would have purchased a purely acoustic J-15 if offered, but this arrangement is perfect - I can't see the electronics and yet they are there if I ever want it. I would definitely recommend this guitar to anyone looking for a round shoulder Gibson. If you don't mind Gibson straying from their traditional mahogany/spruce formula, you would be well served to give the J-15 a try. I did and I walked home with one.

  • Remarkable Gibson Quality You Would Expect

As reviewed by PHIL WOLPERS on 4/22/2014

A few months back I decided it was time to step up my 20 year old all laminate acoustic to something made in America of all solid wood. I've got a Gibson Les Paul Traditional that I loved, but I figured a Gibson acoustic was out of my budget this time around. I began looking at Taylors and Martins, assuming I would just end up with a Taylor. On my first trip into GC I saw this beauty on the wall and had to try it. I was intrigued, but also incredible skeptical because of the lack of rosewood and mahogany. The first G chord changed all of that. I was amazed!!! To be sure of myself I played a J-35 and a Hummingbird, as well as several Taylors and Martins. 5 GC trips later I still kept coming back to this specific J-15, even over a used J-35 and Hummingbird that were in my budget. I was in love, and of course I brought it home. Features: You may be skeptical of the Walnut as I was, but what I found is that it feels and looks great on the fretboard and back and gives the guitar a wonderfully balanced tone that has excellent not definition and brightness while still retaining a good low end. Quality: Amazing handcrafted Gibson quality, just as you would expect from a higher end model that came from the same skilled hands in Bozeman, MT. Look & Feel: This guitar settles into your lap and arms naturally. At first glance its an understated but classic acoustic guitar. Look deeper and you'll see beautiful pearl inlays, an abalone rosette and binding around the body. 5 stars, no question. Gibson has set a new bar with this guitar.

  • First Gibson Acoustic and just love it!

As reviewed by Michael on 7/11/2014

I've had my J-15 for just over 2 months now. I got mine at the GC store in Canton, MI. Martin helped me and he was just great. He set me up with all I was looking for. Gibson's new J-15 is just awesome. It came very playable out of the box. I've now changed the stings to a set of D'Addario's EJ26 11's. I do think I'll take it to a tech to have the action lowered some. The walnut back and sides are beautiful, and just love the spruce top. The tone and sound is bright and warm. This guitar just looks and feels great. It came with a great Gibson Acoustic case that is very nice. The only thing I don't like is the heads on the mini Grover tuners. Their a little small, would prefer the large style knobs, but that's very minor issue overall. I would recommend this guitar to anyone who is looking for a higher end model without having to spend $2500 or more. Gibson knocked this one out of the park.
