Product Information

The look of a well-loved, gracefully aged instrument.

The Gibson Faded SG Special is an electric guitar that maintains the tradition of looks, functionality, and value for which the SG guitar is known. Under its attractive faded finish, the Faded Special SG is still the traditional SG, with mahogany body and neck, Tune-O-Matic/stopbar bridge, and alnico 490 pickups. The guitar's faded finish gives it the look of an electric that started its rockin' days in the '60s.

A Little SG History

In 1961, the Les Paul was redesigned with a thinner body and 2 sharp cutaway horns that made the upper frets more accessible while lowering production costs. The new guitar was popular, but Les Paul the guitarist behind the original Les Paul did not like it and asked to have his name removed. Gibson renamed the model the "SG" which was short for "solid guitar". Though Les Paul's name was officially removed from the model in 1961, the plastic Les Paul nameplates (positioned between the rhythm pickup and fingerboard) were in abundance in the Gibson factory and SG models having these nameplates were built and sold by Gibson up to the end of 1963. SGs have been the choice of world-class artists such as Pete Townsend, Eric Clapton, Tony Iommi, and Angus Young.

NEW REVIEW - Gibson Faded SG

The Gidson Faded SG is a great guitar. I tried it out of the box but the B and e strings sounded very tinny.... Took it to get it set up and all is well with the guitar now. I would recommend this guitar to anyone that want an SG without paying the price (extra $300.00 - $400.00) for the paint job that's on the Standard SG. Other than that and an extra bevel on the body they are one in the same. Also, I would recommend you get chrome humbucker covers from Gibson and have them installed (soldered) as the look is much much better.

FADED IS GREAT AFTER SET-UP

First things first: The people reviewing this guitar and giving negative comments are probably doing so in large part becuase their resepctive guitars have not been set-up properly. I have been playing guitar for many years and one thing is certain: There is no such thing as a guitar being set-up perfectly right out of the box. For those of you who claim you received one, I respectfully submit that it is just not really posssible. This faded SG is no different - mine was set-up in a terible manner. The intonation was way off, the action was too high, the pick-ups needed adjustment, the truss rod and stop tail also needed adjustment. Even the fretboard and the body finish needed to be oiled. HOWEVER, once I spent the $60 to accomplish this, I came home with an absolutely superb instrument. It plays and sound slike a dream. I own an SG Special with P-90s and I previously owned an SG standard, but this guitar is lighter and sounds as good if not better than either of those guitars. Even with my $60 set-up adjustment investment, I feel like I am way ahead of the game in terms of money for value. I will be gigging with this guitar as my primary weapon. It is an excellent musical instrument. You will not achieve its true potential unless you set it up properly.

A must have for any Gibson fan!!!

I have owned one of these Faded SG Specials for about four years now and I love it. It feels and sounds as good as any SG, and costs half the price. I didn't expect this guitar to be this awesome for the price. The neck plays extremely fast and the pickups sound awesome. This guitar is extremely light so you can play it for hours without getting tired. I would highly recommend this guitar to anyone.

All Right

I will make this short and sweet. This is a great guitar for the money. I didn't see any difference on this than the standard SG. If you want a Gibson and don't have alot of money this buds for you.

great guitar for the price

I have had this guitar for about 3 weeks now and have got more than I expected from it, I collect every type of guitar you can name from les pauls to the SG to a stratocaster i play them daily and own close to 30 electric guitars, primarily Gibsons but also have some Dean guitars too. This guitar is amazing the sound and quality of this guitar are great i love this guitar and even though i just invested in the new dean explosion razorback v, this guitar is in the top 3 of my entire collection. i can highly recmmend this guitar for the beggining or experienced guitarist.

An American Classic

I really enjoy this guitar. My old guitar used to leave bruses on my shoulder because it was so heave, but now i can wear it all day and i won't even notice it. I also dont know what people are talking about when they say the tuners were bad. Odviously they had a dud sg. With my line 6 amp and pedal this guitar could create the best rock tone ever. Overall i think my 2005 sg is the best guitar Ive ever played.

WOW!!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this guitar!!! I've owned it a about a week now, and it is the poop! I went to GC almost a year ago just looking and played one of these...really liked it right off. Saved a little money, not hard to do cuz' the price is so good, and got one. This is my second Gibson (got a Les Paul Junior w/2 P-90, love that one too!)and if you're looking for a nice, cool ax this is the one!!

Excellent Guitar

Ive owned this guitar for about 4 months now. Wow, this was an excellent buy. I was hesitant to purchase this "cheaper" Gibson but man I was mistaken. Gibson gets the price down due to the cheaper finish, but I like natural finish guitars so this works for me. The circuitry is quiet, the pickups rock, and the neck is great. I dont really like the cosmetics of the wrapped pickups but they sound so good so I get over it. I have a hard time deciding which guitar to play now, my faded SG or my Les Paul Classic. Unfortunatly the Tele gets no playing time anymore!!

call me little angus

i come from a musical family and my dad has always sought to provide me a quality instruments. He felt the faded sg would do this with out going overboard. Little did he know I"ll never need anything more. This rocks as good as anything outthere> the bean counter at Gibson must not be paying attention because the value of this thing far outweighs the cost. Its my ax for life.
