Radical sharp design and excellent playing balance.

The body of the Gibson Explorer Electric Guitar is solid mahogany for a fat and punchy sound, while the 496R Hot Ceramic and 500T Super Ceramic humbuckers sizzle and snarl with aggressive authority. The Explorer's radical design not only looks sharp, but it also offers excellent playing balance. Other features include a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard with dot inlay, Tune-O-Matic bridge with stopbar tailpiece, and Grover machine heads. Made in the USA. Includes Gibson hardshell case. ---

  • Outstanding Guitar for Any Style

As reviewed by Ben on 5/13/2008

I bought an Explorer in black two years ago, and I will say that out of every guitar I've ever owned (LTD, Ibanez, Fender, Carvin) this guitar had the most bite, the best tone, and the best look for the price. I will never ever put anything but a 500T in my bridge pick-up slot again. When I used my back-up guitar for different tunings I actually had to turn my amp up to compensate for the difference. These pick-ups are HOT!!! I ran this thing through a couple of foot switches and into my Mesa Dual Rectifier. Best tone I've EVER gotten! Not sure what folks are complaining about as far as weight goes. I was surprised by how light this guitar is right off the bat. It made playing live a complete breeze. I always got compliments on it too. Hardware is solid (including the tone knobs you dinguses). Only thing I would improve upon is the tuning machines. I'm not a fan of Grovers at all, and would absolutely upgrade to locking tuners. I will be buying a new one in white very soon. Believe the 4 and 5 star reviews!!!

  • 5 stars is too low!

As reviewed by cody denton on 5/2/2008

Great guitar, no matter what you play, this is the guitar to get. If your into blues its got the perfect tone, if you like classic rock its got the perfect sound. Or if youre like me and like the crunching tone of a good metal song its got it! Comfortable standing and sitting, plus the case is all shag carpet inside to keep your baby safe. The only downside is that it is a little heavy when in the case and youre hauling it around. But other than that its wonderfully awesome.

  • What a guitar

As reviewed by Kenny Drinkwater on 2/23/2011

background: i've been playing guitar for over 3 years and i've been researching and playing guitars for months now. i'm 15 and a "big" kid so keep that in mind when i get to the size stuff later. this guitar is amazing, don't be deterred by thinking it is only for metal, this thing screams when you want it to and bites when you're hungry for that and sounds big. you will not get a thin sound out of this at all. you can make it a little less bright by turning down the tone knob. the features on this guitar aren't many. its a gibson, but with 1 tone knob, which makes it look so much simpler. its a very well built guitar. it seems sturdy, especially because the guitar i got was up on the wall for 11 months and its in good shape through all the people at guitar center playing it. its also so beautiful, i got this in natural and it just blends with the fretboard and it makes you feel like the notes natural fly out off the frets. the neck is very smooth and its incredibly easy to access the high frets. the finish on it is still in great shape and i can't wait to see how it ages. like i said this guitar is a year old and the gold isnt rusted at all. the only thing i dislike is after a long time playing your shoulder gets a little sore, but it's not nearly as bad as heavier guitars. get this guitar and you won't be dissapointed.
