The heavy tones of a Les Paul without the weight.

The Gibson Memphis ES-139 with the familiar style of the world's greatest guitar, the Les Paul, but at an average weight of 6.5 lbs. and the superior semi-hollow construction which breathes new tonal air into an admired ancestor's appearance. The new single cut body shape looks like Rock, and features 2 Burstbucker Pro's, with Stopbar and an ABR bridge with single volume and tone controls. The weight-relieved centerblock goes without f-holes for a high volume performance without feedback problems. Other features are CTS Pots, “Orange Drop” capacitors and a quartersawn maple neck. The ES-139 is 100% American made in Memphis, TN.

Includes gig bag.

  • A Gibson for Fender Players

As reviewed by Jeff McLeod on 12/16/2013

I went in the newly opened Guitar Center in Athens, GA just browsing recently when this guitar caught my eye. Others have said that it's plain looking, but I think the simple appointments look very elegant. What caught my eye was the single volume and tone, which I prefer, having played primarily Fender guitars for the last 30 years. I'm also a single coil guy and although I love the punch and tone of humbuckers, most sound muddy to me when the guitar is turned down. Not so with this guitar. At every setting, the guitar had clarity and punch. The chambered construction allows for an airy tone, but when the guitar is really turned up, especially with at higher gain settings, it is still very controllable in a very musical way. I can even get a credible Tele back pickup sound with the volume rolled down a little on the bridge pickup with some slap delay. It was set up well and I've had to do nothing to it, except raise the action just a tad, as I like to be able to get under the high strings to bend them. Like some Gibson SGs I've seen, the light weight of the guitar makes it neck heavy, so a wide leather or suede strap is necessary to keep the neck from diving for the floor when you're standing up, but with a proper strap it's no problem. The Grover tuners look and perform great. This guitar comes with a padded Gibson gig bag, and I emailed Gibson and they told me they don't make a hard case for this guitar. It's not even on the Gibson website, so I don't know if it will be a model that is made for a long time or not. I'm going to keep looking for a hard case that fits it, even if it's a universal type. I'm quite pleased with it however and plan to hang on to it.
