Sandwiched between The Yardbirds and Cream, 1967's John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton was a showcase for the brilliant 21-year-old guitarist turned deity. For this record, Clapton picked up a 1960 Les Paul Standard and a Marshall tube amplifier and set the music world on fire. This Les Paul/Marshall combination, along with Clapton's incredible playing, helped define not only the cutting edge blues-rock of the day, but its powerful, rich, and fat sound has influenced generations of guitar players ever since!
Eric Clapton played this Les Paul all through his days in The Bluesbreakers through the start of his next ground-breaking band, Cream, at which time, unfortunately, the guitar was stolen at an early rehearsal. Clapton went on to utilize other fine Gibson electric models during this era of his career including the SG, ES-335, Firebird, and other Les Paul guitars to great effect, but many guitar enthusiasts, and likely Eric himself, have greatly missed the sound and tonal quality of his legendary original Les Paul Standard.
In a historic collaboration 43 years later, Gibson Custom and Eric Clapton have come together to recreate a tribute to this original guitar. Based on feedback and recollections from Clapton, this guitar has all of the features that Clapton prefers including a special thin 1960 "Eric Clapton" neck profile, Grover tuners, and custom pickups. Produced in extremely limited numbers in three varieties, the Eric Clapton 1960 Les Paul captures the feel, sound, and overall vibe of one of the greatest artist owned Les Pauls of all time.
Only 500 Eric Clapton 1960 Les Paul Standards will be produced: the first 55 instruments are aged by vintage-reproduction master Tom Murphy then hand-signed by Eric Clapton personally. These 55 come with an engraved wood plaque with May 5, 1966 "Beano" comic cover, engraved leather certificate of authenticity, limited 180mg vinyl of John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton, plus a vintage replica strap. An additional 95 guitars are given the Murphy aging treatment and come with a "Beano" comic cover poster, engraved leather COA, limited 180mg vinyl of John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton, and a vintage replica strap. The final 350 are finished to Gibson's VOS specs and come with a "Beano" comic cover poster, special COA, CD of John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton, and a vintage replica strap. All editions come with a Custom Shop hardshell case silkscreened with Eric's signature.
