Overview

The Gibson Les Paul guitars of the late '50s and early '60s have become among the most prized electric guitars on the planet. But to say "the" Les Paul is actually somewhat misleading because Les Paul guitars varied not only from year to year as the model's specs evolved, but even within the same year of manufacture.

To accurately represent the variations in specifications and finish within original examples manufactured in 1960, Gibson is offering three versions of this hallowed vintage guitar.

Version 1

At the start of 1960, the Gibson Les Paul retained the same specs as its predecessor from 1959, although it did receive the official "Les Paul Standard" designation in place of the former "Les Paul Model" (a name that its headstock nonetheless still retained). Among these details were the full, rounded neck profile, top-hat control knobs, and Heritage Cherry Sunburst or Heritage Dark Sunburst finish, and these are the very characteristics with which the Gibson Custom Shop has imbued. The first version of the 50th Anniversary Gibson 1960 Les Paul Standard might be confused for a 1959 Les Paul guitar if not for the 1960 serial number stamped into the back of the guitar's headstock at the dawn of the new decade, and the R0 serial number of this 50th Anniversary Gibson Les Paul. This electric guitar is available in heritage Cherry Sunburst and Heritage Dark Burst finishes.

Version 2
Version 2 represents the neck's transition from full to slim”a progression that was gradual, rather than sudden”in the form of a Gibson Custom Shop 50th Anniversary 1960 Les Paul Standard with thinner, yet still somewhat rounded and "elliptical" neck profile, based on painstaking research and detailed scans of several transitional '60s Les Pauls that were studied by the Custom Historic and Engineering team. To represent this alteration visibly, Version 2 will be offered in two classic "faded" 'Burst colors: Light Iced Tea and Sunset Tea Burst.

Version 3
The third version of the Gibson Custom Shop 50th Anniversary 1960 Les Paul Standard is represented by an electric guitar with the slim-taper neck for which late-'60 Les Paul guitars have become famous, along with the double-band tuners and gold top-hat control knobs with the "new" silver inserts that were fitted to these guitars. Version three features a '60s Cherry Burst finish.

Furthermore, Version 3 accurately represents the changes in the finishing process at Gibson in the latter part of 1960, in its more vibrant, colorfast Cherry Sunburst, a finish that stood the test of time somewhat better than many of the sunbursts that preceded it.

In addition to these pertinent details, the Gibson Custom Shop 50th Anniversary 1960 Les Paul Standard electric guitar pack all the tonal nuances and unparalleled playability that really helped to make these guitars revered in the hands of artist like Eric Clapton, who wielded a slim-necked 1960 Les Paul Standard on the most influential blues-rock album of all time, John Mayall Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton, often referred to as the "Beano" album. The time-tested tonewood combination of mahogany and maple, the classic duo of Tune-O-Matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece, and a pair of Gibson's lauded PAF-style BurstBucker humbucking pickups all work toward a tonal splendor that no other guitar can equal.

Add to these the Gibson Custom Shop 50th Anniversary 1960 Les Paul Standards' long-tenon neck joint, traditionally back-angled headstock, and thin, breathable nitrocellulose finish, and you've got a guitar that sings and resonates like no other. A total of only 500 Custom Shop 50th Anniversary 1960 Les Paul Standard guitars will be produced in a blend of all three versions. All LEs Paul guitars will come with a Custom Shop hardshell case and a 50th Anniversary Certificate of Authenticity.

Body and Finish
Crafted from a book-matched figured maple top and a lightweight one-piece mahogany back, these 1960 Les Paul guitars are finished in low-build nitrocellulose lacquer, and are available in a range of colors to suit each Version, including Heritage Cherry Sunburst, Heritage Dark Sunburst, Light Iced Tea Burst, Sunset Tea Burst and Cherry Sunburst.

In every way, these details represent careful study of several actual 1960 Les Paul Standards that were examined in the course of reproducing the Custom Shop 50th Anniversary 1960 Les Paul Standard.

Neck and Headstock
The guitar's neck and headstock are made in the classic tradition of the original 1960 Les Paul. Carved from a single piece of quarter-sawn mahogany, and topped with a rosewood fingerboard, the design incorporates Gibson's lauded 17-degree back-angled headstock, which contributes greatly to the electric guitar's resonance and sustain.

Pickups and Electronics
The Gibson Custom Shop 50th Anniversary 1960 Les Paul Standard guitar carries a complement of pickups and hardware that accurately reflect the original equipment on the most desirable Les Paul guitars ever made. A pair of BurstBucker pickups captures that highly sought-after "PAF" style tone, while quality CTS potentiometers with "bumblebee" tone caps translate the signal in pure vintage style.

Hardware
As befits a Gibson Custom Shop Anniversary Les Paul of this caliber, the Custom Shop 50th Anniversary 1960 Les Paul Standard is equipped with Gibson's most accurate, period-correct reproduction hardware, including Kluson-style tuners, a Tune-O-Matic bridge and stop-bar tailpiece both made from the correct metals and plated in nickel, and Gibson's original aluminum strap buttons, all of which contribute to the vintage look and tone of the Les Paul guitar.

Excellence!

Comments about Gibson Custom 50th Anniversary 1960 Les Paul Electric Guitar - Version 1 with Rounded Neck:

I would have to say this is the most impressive guitar I have ever bought. She has a great tone with and extemely comfortable feel. I wasn't sure what kind of guitar I should buy, because nothing really stood out that was worth the money, I played around on my friends guitar ( the same model) and immediately knew this was the guitar for me. This guitar has great tone that ranges from clean blues to heavy medal. I play this guitar at my church on sundays and always get compliments on the beauty and tone of this guitar from many different ranges of people. I would strongly recommend this guitar to anybody, if you have the money then it is definately worth it. im afraid i cant say anything negative about this work of art.

The Price of Quality

By Arick

from Newark

Comments about Gibson Custom 50th Anniversary 1960 Les Paul Electric Guitar - Version 1 with Rounded Neck:

There is simply no electric guitar that matches the quality of a Gibson. Physical Quality: As soon as you pick up the Les Paul you know it is a quality product. It is heavier than most guitars. It's solid wood body is made to last. I purchased an Epiphone Les Paul and then a Gibson Les Paul some of the distinguishing differences in quality are as follows: The cuts of the frets are high quality being tapered at the ends enabling players to move up and down the fret board without the brass frets catching your fingers. The action on the Gibson responds better when making adjustments and the pickups are far more sensitive to your playing than the Epiphone. Even the tuning hardware is high quality. Due to the weight of the guitar I would recommend purchasing a lock strap system. I was playing in denver when the guitars weight tore through my leather strap notch and had the guitar almost fall on stage had I not caught it fast enough. My Epiphone Les Paul's 1/4 inch input would constantly unscrew or get loose. The Gibson is ghigh quality and I've never had issues with the inputs. You will notice there is a metal encasement next to the input which adds durability- the Epiphone does into have this. Sound Quality: There is a richness to the Gibson Les Paul that cannot be duplicated by other quitars. I recommend using nickel plated strings as it has a fuller quality to the guitar. The guitar's sound controls are simple to use and easy to spot where their levels are since their numeric markings are large. Disadvantages: Neck width- you should have a pretty strong index finger for bar chords as the Les Paul guitar has a large neck width as compared to a fender or other brand. However this makes for better sounding solos since you have more room to shift, hammer and tremble your strings. The further down the fret board you go the wider you get and your thumb will not be able to provide support like a Fender would since the Les Paul only has one cut-away. Bass, Rythm, Lead switch- while strumming it can be easy to accidentally hit this switch changing your sound dramatically and possibly taking the punch out of your sound. Just be aware of where your hand is going up or down. Pick Guard- If you want to take the pick Guard off- good news is that it is easy- bad news is that the screw holes are extremely noticable even when filled. If you want quality get this guitar. If you want a rythm guitar- I would suggest looking somewhere else. If you are just starting- A Les Paul is not the way to go since it does require a bit more finger strength then a thinner necked guitar would.

Comments about Gibson Custom 50th Anniversary 1960 Les Paul Electric Guitar - Version 1 with Rounded Neck:

This stunningly handsome piece of history is an absolute treasure in the world of music. A 1960's classic, the Les Paul is a timeless weapon of rock or a beautiful heart of soul. With two passive humbucking pickups, this guitar offers both a sweet, sensitive, beautiful sound punctuated by a perfect sound of easy light music, and a large, loud, masterfuly brutal sound on hard rock or metal. With a heritage darkstyle finish with a rounded neck, this guitar not only feels fantastic, but also looks beautiful. This truly is a masterpiece.

By Al Glenn

Comments about Gibson Custom 50th Anniversary 1960 Les Paul Electric Guitar - Version 1 with Rounded Neck:

if you've never played a gibson les paul, now is the time because there is really no guitar out there that can top a les paul. i know of a couple custom guitars and have played a couple fenders around the same price tag, but nothing has the feel and neck play of this legendary les paul. the neck plays like butter and gives any level guitar player a killer tone. really an incredible machine

Wanted to hate it.

By John Corsello

from Deptford, New Jersey

Comments about Gibson Custom 50th Anniversary 1960 Les Paul Electric Guitar - Version 1 with Rounded Neck:

Until recently I'd never played a Les Paul. I've been a Fender and PRS guy during these many years of playing music. Truth is, I resent the Gibson Guitar Company, because it needlessly caused the Paul Reed Smith Guitar Company to spend $tens of thousands defending itself againt Gibson's charge that PRS stole the Les Paul shape in producing its single cutaway model. This of course is nonsense, because that shape has appeared in other company's models - Gretch for example - before PRS even existed. That said I broke down and played this particular Paul at a Guitar Center in Pa. It was like hating an opposing team's player, but having to admit the guy is a fabulous athlete. Sustain straight from Rock n Roll heaven, fat punchy and powerful chords, that sexy timeless Les Paul shape, and a surprisingly versitile range of tones. I still resent Gibson, but would buy this axe in a nano second.
