Overview

This 50th Anniversary reissue of the 1958 Gibson Flying V Electric Guitar is consistent with the original guitar. Features a two-piece Korina body and one-piece Korina neck. Production is limited to only 100 guitars.

The Flying V was years ahead of its time, as Gibson dealers tended to think of it as a display prop rather than a guitar to sell. It wasn't until the late 1960s that the electric guitar started to gain popularity. As guitar heroes such as Albert King, Jimi Hendrix and Lonnie Mack adopted it, the "V" quickly became symbolic of rock 'n' roll itself.

Excellent instrument except for the price

Comments about Gibson Custom 50th Anniversary 1958 Korina Flying V Electric Guitar:

The tone of this instrument is immensely authoritative and present. Unamplified, it sounds like a classic Gibson acoustic but at very low volume - rare for electric guitars. I once tried an original Flying V (with nickel hardware so from 1962 or 1963) and while this is not identical it is surprisingly close. Contrary to what is stated in the specs, the pickups are 57 Classics, a much better choice for this guitar than the ceramics listed. (The bridge pickup as well as the neck pickup is a 57 Classic, not a 57 Classic Plus.) The instrument is somewhat neck-heavy, but probably less so than the Epiphone Flying V's, which have korina bodies but mahogany necks. (Mahogany is typically heavier than korina.) The upper neck access is unparalleled - not the case for the late 1960's style Flying V's, which join the body at a lower fret. The sustain is good up to about the 15th fret but much weaker thereafter. On guitars with lesser high-fret access, you'd probably never notice. Original-style Flying V's hang in a somewhat strange and undefined playing position unlike Les Pauls and Strats. The one I am familiar with has a quarter-inch-wide black spot on the back where the korina wood was infested by a fungus that preys on it, rather careless on Gibson's part. Some people have said that Flying V's sound like a cross between a Fender and a Gibson, which is about right - 75% Gibson, 25% Fender I would say. If you're undecided between the two this might be the perfect guitar to have. Unfortunately, the price will keep it out of the hands of most of the people who would enjoy playing it. To bring an Epiphone Flying V close to it you'd have to replace the tuners, pickups, potentiometers, and probably the bridge and frets, as well as buy a case (not included with the Epi). There would still be a gap in price between the two wide enough to drive a truck through.

Comments about Gibson Custom 50th Anniversary 1958 Korina Flying V Electric Guitar:

Flying V's are awesome. They rock the house. The only down is that you can't sit down and play. But if you are a pro it doesn't affect you in any way. Impress people with the shape of this guitar. Go Gibson!
