Matchless quality

By Eric Johnson

from Madison, WI

Comments about Gibson Custom 1968 Les Paul Custom Flame Top Electric Guitar:

I have played a LOT of Les Pauls in my time. Some I've liked, and some i would have liked to use as firewood. I want to say without hesitation: You haven't played a Les Paul until you've played a custom. I've got the '68 re-issue in the trans red flame top. I will probably never buy another guitar. No need, this is THE one. The sense of quality you feel when picking this guitar up can't be overstated. If you've ever wondered where that special sound an artist gets comes from, it's in a guitar of this caliber. No pedals, processors, or expensive amps will enhance your own sound more profoundly.

Best Gibson Custom You'll Find in this Price Range

By Rory Fogarty

from Seattle, WA

Comments about Gibson Custom 1968 Les Paul Custom Flame Top Electric Guitar:

Let me start by saying this is an outstanding guitar, and worth every penny. This guitar sounds and looks incredible. I cannot understate the wide range of tones you can get from these two Classic 57' pickups. From fat, bass rich chords through the neck pickup, to crystal clear leads through the bridge pickup - and everything between - this guitar does it all. I received this guitar directly from Gibson. It did not hang in the GC showroom prior to me receiving it. So you might ask, why a 4-star rating? I actually wanted to rate 4.5 but that's not an option for these reviews. I'm taking off half a star for a few reasons. Gibson's Quality Control seems to be slipping a bit these days. I understand Custom guitars are crafted by hand and each have a unique character, including minor crafting flaws. These are welcome in my opinion. I didn't buy a Custom for cookie-cutter appeal. My guitar has a few flaws which are kind of cool, and a few which shouldn't have been allowed to leave the shop. There is a small crack in the finish where the neck meets the body, and the red bordering on the neck binding was cut slightly uneven in some places. These are just cosmetic, and only visible close up. Also, the nut was sloppily crafted. Instead of nice smooth cuts for the strings to sit in, there are deep hacks. This is not a big deal because I'm replacing the 6/6 nylon with a bone nut anyway. The bad nut effects tuning on the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th strings and is inexpensive to replace. A couple of things you may be interested to know before purchasing this guitar. This is not a Historic, or Vintage Only Spec (VOS) model, which is a good thing in this case. This guitar is a reissue, but an improved version of the original '68 LP. It has a 60's slim neck, instead of the "baseball bat" neck the original '68 had. With the ebony fretboard, the neck is so smooth and fast you won't want to put it down. It also has a grade AAA figured maple top, better tuning machines, and more. I suggest you do a little research and compare for yourself. I consider the changes to be excellent, but that may not be what you are looking for. GC is offering this Custom 68' LP to players for an incredible price. I shopped around for a long time, originally buying a Gibson USA LP Traditional, which is also an excellent solid body LP. I upgraded to this one once I realized the incredible value. If you have the chance to get one, I highly recommend it.

1968 Gibson Custom Re-issue review

By Rob H

from Albuquerque NM

Comments about Gibson Custom 1968 Les Paul Custom Flame Top Electric Guitar:

I know this guitar is heavy and I know it's expensive. But out of all my guitars this 1968 LP reissue has the best tonal definition out of all my guitars when playing through a Mesa Boogie M5. The pickups are the hottest I have ever heard. I also own a PRS custom 24 and some very other expensive Les Pauls but this 1968 sounds the best and clearest defined on the high gain channels like the Mark IIC+ setting on the Mesa Boogie M5. The sustain goes on forever and the neck is very nice to play anywhere. Although my hands are smaller than most players, I like the C shaped neck a lot, but my style of playing is keeping my left hand fingers perpendicular to the fret board, so this thicker neck does not trouble me. This Guitar and the PRS custom I own are very different, yet I would replace them if they were stolen GOD FORBID. Hope this helps.

Classy

By Joaquin

from Texas

Comments about Gibson Custom 1968 Les Paul Custom Flame Top Electric Guitar:

This is such a fine guitar. I like the "vintage" feel to it, as the 57's add to that classic tone. It is a heavy momma, but that's how you know you'll get the best possible sound of this beast. The necki is so nice and comfortable since it's the slim one. I keep her nice and polished (the triburst) but still play it onstage at Church or events. Love it!!!!!

This is the one!

By Florida Guy

from Jupiter, Florida

Comments about Gibson Custom 1968 Les Paul Custom Flame Top Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar and never looked back... it has it ALL! Great looks, sustain, '57 'bucker tone, a "slimmer" neck on the CG issue (which I personally prefer) and "old school" mojo! I own over a dozen guitars. Some are lighter, some have a few more "bells & whistles", and one even has a "faster" neck profile, but for all-around "hit to the gut" sound, this is it! Yeah it'll break your back and your bank, but so will a supermodel! This one will still be around long after she's gone!

Stunningly Authentic

By Steve

from Boston, MA

Comments about Gibson Custom 1968 Les Paul Custom Flame Top Electric Guitar:

If you are looking for something with which to "shred" or hop around on stage, keep looking. If you are looking for a real Les Paul that has sustain for days, look no further. Sure it weighs about as much as a Volkswagen Beetle, but who cares? I've coveted this guitar for 30 years and finally got the courage to spend the money. Why did I waste so much time? The craftsmanship on my Triburst is incredible. It is truly a work of art.
