  • Workin' Man's Axe

    I own this guitar. Mine is more than 12 years old and I bought it new. I also own an L-5. This guitar plays as good as my Wes Montgomery with out the frills. Feels more like a 175 with a mahogany neck. Strictly for Jazz in my opinion. This single pick up is kinda like a Johnny Smith - mine has a factory 57 humbucker mounted through the top in the rhythm position. The action, fit and finish are really great, although I wish some of the spray patterns on the backs weren't that teardrop shape. Nice Jazz tones with round wounds - put on flat wound if you want a little more warmth. Well worth the money and is perfect for giggin if you have a Byrdland or Super 400 that you don't want to take all over.

  • Sweet simplicity

    Just added the Herb Ellis to my Gibson collection - I've been gigging on a '54 ES-175(single P-90, purchased new by my dad in 1954, given to me in 1964), but am putting it in the vault, so the ES-165 will become my mainstay. As warm as warm can be (I use .11-.50 chromes), dial up tones on my Roland Jazz Chorus. What a combination! The true "Charlie Christian" sound, visually stunning, and Gibson is, once again, crafting true quality products. This ain't no rock guitar - for true jazzers only!

  • Es 165 herb Ellis

    Features are straight forward. Floating pickup, 1 volume control all the specs which everyone knows if you are familiar with archtops, etc. I enjoy the 16 inch body better than a 17 inch, and the floating pickup version, but of course this is always personal. Admittedly, I was surprised that there is some good acoustic tone unplugged to be in your living room with good sustain. The strings are 10's roundwound and I have not tested with flats yet. The workmanship and looks are top notch and have received good comments. The neck has a little thickness and the action and feel is very good. The bound neck and dressed frets are pleasing. Plugged in it is straight jazz, and that is what you are buying. I had the chance to test it out in NYC and went back home and ordered through a New London Guitar Center, as the salesman there was a person I wanted to have receive the credit.Guitar center has always been good, especially here in Hawaii trying to deal with shipping. Use in Big Band situation and chord melody and am much happier than when I had a 17 inch CF1. As well, tested out other archtops, both old and new and did not want to spend a whole bunch, read all reviews and researched. I am pleased to saythis was a good choice all the way around and the cost was realistic.Its not an L5 but it sure has great merit as a jazz archtop, all the way around. I have other great guitars to fill the rock and other void so as a jazz guitar, a good choice.
