A classic with some very special refinements.

Based on the ES-137 Classic, this is the first Gibson archtop to employ a mahogany center block for reduced feedback and greater sustain. Other features are all Gibson deluxe: laminated curly maple body, binding on top and bottom, bound fingerboard, bound peghead, ebony fingerboard, split-diamond overlay headstock, pearloid split-diamond fingerboard inlays, 6-way Varitone switch that filters tone from fat to thin, and '57 Classic pickups (the original Gibson humbuckers from 1957). The magnets and 42-gauge enamel-coated wire are from the original suppliers and the pickups are built by Gibson on the original machinery.

Gibson Custom ES-137 Custom Electric Guitar Features:

  • Laminated curly maple body
  • Maple neck
  • Mahogany center block to reduce feedback and add sustain
  • Multiple bound body on top, single bound on back
  • Bound fingerboard and peghead
  • Nut width 1.6875"
  • Scale: 24-3/4"

  • Pearloid split-diamond fingerboard inlay
  • C inlay at the 12th fret
  • 6-way Varitone switching
  • Tune-o-matic bridge with stop tailpiece

Poor finishing on an expensive guitar?

When my Gibson ES-137 Custom arrived I was pleased and the sound and feel of guitar. However, upon closer inspection I could see quite a few significant problems with the way the guitar was finished. It had what appears to be polishing marks/grooves all over the fret-board, and a lot of burs on the pick-guard where it was trimmed to go around the pick-ups. Additionally, the tailpiece was only screwed in half-way, and there was brown polish all around the nut. The finish on the back of the neck had a 'pebbled' texture to it from poor polishing. On the positive side, this is the best sounding electric guitar I have EVER played and I love it. The neck is also very flat and relatively wide, which allows for great comfort and control. While the guitar itself was well made, it was poorly finished. In fact, I have owned several Epiphones and I have found the construction and finish of the Epiphone guitars to be far superior to their more expensive Gibson big-brother. I would recommend purchasing an Epiphone unless you are 100% resolved to get this particular model of guitar. The Epiphones are nicer, and priced appropriately. This is both the first, and last Gibson guitar I will ever buy.

If you can afford it!!

I bought an ES-137 Custom last year. The first thing I did was change the bridge pickup to a Dirty Fingers. Now I have a guitar that is truly unique. The Varitone switch is wonderful. Thinning out the Dirty Fingers on setting 2 gives a "GROWL" like you've never heard before: the raunchiest bombast that no other guitar can duplicate. I can play the ultimate heavy metal and then go to sweet jazz. The semi-hollow body (much more hollow than the ES 335) gives you a very FULL sound. Ted Nugent would love this guitar. The candly apple red looks killer. So does the eboy fretboard. This guitar turns heads!!!! And Ears!!!
