Gibson Custom Alex Lifeson Les Paul Axcess Electric Guitar (H71395)
Availability:

Humbucker, single-coil, and acoustic tones along with Floyd Rose trem, highlight this progressive rock guitar.

Created through extensive work with Alex, this new model incorporates the Graphtech™ Ghost®-equipped Floyd Rose® licensed tremolo and newly designed output circuitry that offers unprecedented signal routing (via "Regular" output jack and/or "Life-O-Sound" output jack) and tonal shaping flexibility (via push/pull pots) that make full use of the guitar's complete pickup arsenal consisting of piezo and 496R ceramic-magnet neck humbucker and 498T Alnico V bridge humbucker.

To give the Alex Lifeson Les Paul Axcess the best possible foundation, Gibson Custom works with premium woods that are selected for their sublime look as well as their superior resonant qualities. The two-piece top is carved from beautifully figured maple, and joined to a solid, one-piece mahogany back. This classic combination presents all the depth and richness married to lively snap and bite that Les Pauls have been known for six decades.

A quarter-sawn mahogany neck is joined to the body with a glued-in long-tenon joint, and topped with a traditional rosewood fingerboard with 22 medium-jumbo frets and acrylic trapezoid inlays, just the way it's been done since 1952. Kluson-style tuners with pearloid keystone buttons add to the vintage vibe at the headstock end, but down south the electronics and hardware take this guitar into another millennium.

In addition to its traditional Les Paul tonewoods, the Alex Lifeson Les Paul Axcess carries two high-output humbucking pickups with series/parallel wiring options via its push-pull volume controls series/parallel options on its push-pull volume controls, and a Floyd Rose® licensed unit that not only provides the world's most efficient vibrato system, but is also loaded with GraphTech™ Ghost® piezo bridge saddles. Access traditional Gibson magnetic humbucker tones, mix it up with fat and funky series/parallel options, tap the Ghost's® realistic acoustic tones, or blend acoustic and magnetic voices—the sky's the limit from this sonic chameleon, whose sound-shifting depths are virtually limitless. What's more, you can route it all through a traditional mono jack (labeled "Regular") using a single guitar cable, or use two cables to split your sonic trickery off into separate output paths using the "Regular" and the "Life-O-Sound" output jacks together. All this, and the Alex Lifeson Les Paul Axcess still presents that timeless Les Paul look that has remained a classic for more than 50 years, in your choice of two stunning colors—Viceroy Brown and Royal Crimson—both approved by the artist himself, and both resplendent atop a stunningly figured maple top.

Since the mid-1970s, Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson has personified the consummate rock innovator--a sonic adventurer capable of producing mind-blowing power chords and dizzying arpeggios alike, ultimately sculpting them into huge, rich melodies and ingenious arrangements.

  • One of the Best I have played

As reviewed by Rick Fisher on 12/14/2011

This instrument is one of the finest instruments I have ever played/owned. - Custom Shop build quality compared to non-Custom Shop Gibsons and any other instrument, except PRS, this is of a noticeably better quality and playability. - Tone woods make a big difference. What I have noticed is that the most vocal online critics don't own the item and tend to exclusively sing the praises of Ibanez. I have several Prestige guitars, which are great, but they are no Gibson Custom shop instrument. Market differences due to manufacturing locations skew the pricing where making such claims is Apples to Oranges. - Floyd Rose: First let me state that I am typically not a fan. If Sperzel or Schaller locking systems that lock at the tuning post had been developed first the Floyd Rose system would have never existed. With that said, this is the best set up and implementation of a Floyd Rose System I have ever played. Inconvenience of use aside, the system keeps the guitar in excellent tune. And I have read online that numerous critics state that a non-locking Les Paul stays in tune better. That's unfounded and incorrect. I have two of them and they don't. I have used and owned a number of non-locking Kluson equipped guitars and they stay in tune OK, but not great. The G string is a persistent issue with those systems, but much less evident on this guitar, due to the Floyd locking nuts. It's almost always in tune. Additionally, this guitar is set up in a way where the tremolo is arched back toward the body slightly more than a typical Floyd Rose system and thus out of the way a bit more. This was an excellent design consideration. - In a related item, several online inquirers were curious about the ability to palm mute, a technique I use often. I have found no problem with palm muting, and find it easier on this guitar than the average guitar. - Piezo: The Graphtech Piezo included has a superb sound, coupled with the excellent playability of the guitar, I doubt it could be much better. - Axcess: The cutaway that allows the additional fretboard access is excellent. While this does not have the extreme accessibility of a Jackson or Carvin Neck-Through, it has an outstanding bit of extra access. All fret positions in all frets are easily accessible. - Pickups/Wood/Tone: As good as any I've heard. It has a very Lifeson-esque sound out of the box, and I got this plugged into several amps with settings left as is. I would describe it as thick and fat yet clear and powerful. - Action/Playability: I have owned well over 60 guitars in the last 30 years and played many more than that. This is in the top 3-5 instruments I have ever played as far as playability. Felt like an old friend after three notes, lol. - Price: many folks have harped on how expensive this instrument is. I think "quality" is a state that can only inherently be assessed by playing the instrument a lot and playing it through the best equipment. I have played this through my Engl Steve Morse Head, a PRS "H" 2-channel, a Spider Valve, a Roland cube and a totally virtual environment. It shines in all situations. It excels even more through the tube driven amps, esp the Engl and the PRS. This is where (aside from insane playability), the Custom Shop separation from the ordinary becomes very evident. Guitars of this caliber come alive in this scenario. - Versatility: with the ability to tap series/parallel by push/pull, giving eight tones (2 neck, 2 bridge, 4 in the middle position combining them) rather than three, plus the Piezo settings, it will take a long while to find all of the many possible tones. Assessment: Top notch, one of the Best Purchases you can make if you can afford it and it will pay to own it over the long term. You will not easily be able to put it down. This instrument has a very big vibrant tone. It has a very realistic acoustic tone and sounds excellent on electric with blues, classic rock, progressive, metal and more. It covers most sonic territory, and while no instrument is a be all end all for everything, this is about as close as a guitar can get to that.
