  • One of Gibson's best

As reviewed by eric on 6/1/2011

I have this stock on my Faded Flying V. It is transparent and soulful, with no mud at all. While the 500t only sounds great with heavy clipping (it can be quacky and brittle when played clean or with light 'pushed' overdrive through my Blues Deluxe), the 496r sounds good no matter what. With heavy distortion, it is extremely crisp, smooth and creamy, and on lighter settings it is almost bell-like. This pickup is also suitable for the bridge position--it has almost the same impedance as the 490t (8-9k), and pole spacing is standard for Gibson BRIDGE humbuckers, at 2" (the 500t is actually 'F-spaced', at 2 1/8"). So at some point I might move the 496r to the bridge position, and put maybe a 490r in the neck, and lose the 500t altogether. But for now, the neck position with the 496r is where I spend most of my time on the V.

  • the best humbucker

As reviewed by TheCapWithASonex on 1/3/2007

I have theese on my Gibson Sonex-180 Custom and they are just incredible. I have played EMG's humbuckers but they're far away from the 496. The neck one gives incredible clear and accurate sound and the bridge one, with a normal amp distortion, gives a powerful, hot and heavy sound. If you're in to hard rock, punk or metal, this pickup is the ONE.

  • This is the one

As reviewed by C.J. DeRoche on 6/4/2009

I've been using this pickup for 15 years on my LP. I can't even remember what my treble/bridge pickup sounds like any more. This ceramic is awesome and I highly recommended it. Chording is full and deep and leads are warm heavy and responsive, (yes, I play lead with it) It's awesome.
