  • SG under a grand, killer deal

As reviewed by Walter J on 6/4/2014

I ordered the blemished walnut GC had and I tell you what what a deal, I checked it out from top to bottom only thing I found was a almost nonexistent dent in the headstock I mean I looked at the guitar a long time befor I found the blemish. I tuned it with the factory strings (can't stand factory strings) did the normal stretching of the strings but just wouldn't stay in tune (G string kept going flat) so I put my favorite strings on, Gibson Vintage reissue 10-46 pure nickel strings and got that awesome playability and tone im used too, From the pictures I've seen I didn't like the banner but seeing it in person I'm diggin it. On checking the factory setup with Gibson spec's it was dead nut's on, the 490R & 490T pups are nice and hot, I wasn't sure about the Dark cream mounting rings but on the walnut they blend well and I still get to see that nice tight mahogany grain in the wood with the walnut stain, the rosewood neck look's killer in it's natural color, the Vintage Style Tuners finish off the SG look, I wasn't sure if it did have coil-tapping but it does (thumbs up gibson). I don't get the neck movement like the previous reviewer is getting but I did notice the stock strings from the factory were very light and I got a lot of string bend from them, with the 10's I get string bend the way i'm used too. As far as neck bend I have to hold the body to get the tremolo efx from the neck, I'm still getting used to the new volume and tone knobs but I like them and I really like the fact they put larger strap buttons on it, I've had problems in the past with the smaller buttons on SG's with the strap coming off on the back of the body while playing befor I put locking buttons on, not on this guitar with the larger buttons. I have 2 practice amps, sounds great through both, 1st a Peavey Vypyr VIP1, 2nd a Marshall DSL5C,I can really get that ACDC tone, Hendrix vintage 60's to heavy metal with the Marshall and the VIP1 still amazes me the tones and efx that amp puts out, there are so many combos you can come up with I find new things every day and I've had it over a year. PROS- Price, very well made, excellent tones and playability, what you get for the price is your going to get a truly awesome Gibson USA built SG guitar without it being a junior model. CONS- outside of the factory strings I haven't found any yet and don't think I will I've put it through it's paces.

  • Great guitar but Gibson quality lacking

As reviewed by David Griffis on 4/18/2014

Received 4 guitars with defects, the last from Gibson directly. Small but noticeable. Rep said they would try and take care of it, but something is off. Will be my one and only Gibson. On the flip the 480/490 pickups on my latest SG are awesome. I like the sound better than the more costly standard model. Neck moves slightly during playing changing the pitch but not as bad as the SG-400 Epiphone pro. Reminds me of the days American built cars had defects and they were selling more imports which led to the slump in the market. Hope they get the wake-up call at Gibson before it's too late. Nothing wrong with a hand built guitar. Just that it needs to be inspected correctly and sent back to the assembly line if there are issues. I have other reputable brands and their quality is outstanding. Thank you Guitar Center for having the patience of going back and forth with Gibson until I was pretty much accepting of my purchase

  • Not for me

As reviewed by Doug on 5/5/2015

I returned my Special for an SG Standard. The Special is an incredible deal money-wise, however I coughed up some extra money for a nice Standard. There is a difference in the weight, fret dressing, finish, body workmanship and materials, and hardware. If you have the money, spend it. If you are on a budget, this is probably a great deal when it is on sale.
