I bought this clutch a few weeks ago and it works pretty well, but when you drop the clutch and you have the clutch set so you can pointer finger in between the two hi-hat cymbals and you hit the drop clutch lever and do a hard hit the bottom part of the clutch will slide up then lock back up but it still rocks
I just recently purchased this item and it packs a punch and works properly except for if you hit your hi-hat in the released position and hit it to hard the clutch will go back into the locked position. But it still rocks!
The rubber on the handle wears off quickly but I ended up just adding color to it with duct tape. I changed the wing screw into a drum key screw because I kept hitting it and it kept falling. This thing is a great buy though. I would recommend to anyone who plays with a double-bass pedal or kit to get one as soon as possible. Great price too and does the exact same thing as the more expensive ones.
Ok, so I have 2 of these drop clutches, the first of which i got a few years ago for my main hi hat. At first, it didn't respond well at all. It wouldn't clamp 50% of the time, and would come undone when I was playing open hat rhythms. So, I did a few things. I worked the spring a bit to try and see if the extra work would allow it to properly set in, and I took the little adhesive felt patch off the clutch. It still didn't work properly 100%, but it was still an improvement. After a few more weeks, it got to the point where it suddenly worked 100% of the time. It's been a year since then and it has not dropped a single time and always engages when told to. So, this product doesn't start off promising, but give it time to set in and it will be a huge asset to your playing.
It does what it was designed to do with ease and consistency. Good quality product.
When I bought my shell pack, the hi-hat stand didn't have the mechanism for it to work, so I picked up the drop clutch. I've turned it to a dual bass setup and this thing is great for switching back and forth on the fly. Keeps the audience guessing!
I had never seen or used a drop clutch before I ordered this one from Guitar Center (I'm a brand new drummer), and I wasn't sure I would really be using the double bass pedal very much, but the clutch looked like a cool addition, and I thought it might encourage me to try out the double pedal more, so I ordered it. (Since I wanted a new clutch, I ordered the Gibralter standard clutch at the same time, just in case this drop clutch didn't work well or had other drawbacks. I've also reviewed the Gibraltar standard clutch here on GC.) The drop clutch was extremely easy to install, after figuring out how it worked (there are no instructions, but it was pretty obvious). It grabbed and released from the first trial, and I've yet to have it misbehave in either direction (although I've had it less than a month). There's no drawback to having the drop clutch, even if I'm not using it. It's somewhat heavier and bulkier, but I'm not remotely tempted to remove it if I don't think I'm going to be doing much double pedal work. Actually, it's convenient even if you're not using your other foot on a bass pedal, but are just playing closed hi hat for an extended stretch. It frees your other foot for comfort (or not messing up!), and I find it produces a nice consistent closed hi hat sound for me. I am still playing around with the tightness of the two nuts securing the high hat. The bottom nut on mine is a special split one with a drum key screw for extra securing to the threaded shaft (although the picture here on the website shows a standard bottom nut). Initially I had a bit of "tilt" to the washers, and even after re-mounting the hi hats (after cleaning) I'm having trouble getting the two hi hats to line up over each other on my hi hat stand. The drop clutch isn't coming off, however. I really like it, and you can drop the top hat "silently" while the hats are together, and it picks up when you pedal without a hitch or an extra sound. Excellent product; highly recommended.
First of all, my hat is terrible. Really need a new one. Worst part was the clutch would come unscrewed EVERY song. Saw this as a stop-gap. What a great idea. I guess it depends on your cymbals, but I get a very nice slushy rock sound when the top cymbal's dropped. Much better than that tight, pinched, almost humming sound when your foots down on the pedal too heavy while playing. The "pick-up" works PERFECTLY every time. Very well engineered and machined. The trickiest part is trying to work hitting the release lever into the middle of a fill, so that the hat is back down for the next section of the song, like putting a kick/crash on four (and hitting the hat lever as well) so it's down by the downbeat of the next section. Sometimes the (failed) results are hilarious - but we're getting better at it. No instructions, but you'll figure it out. My son and I both play and we give it two enthusiastic thumbs up. And when I replace my hat, this will definitely make the move to the new one.
Using a double bass, either the Hi-Hat was closed or Opened during playing. Went with this little device, and it really works! I was surprised about the durability, and it hasn't failed yet. Get It!!!!
I just used this at practice and it works like a charm. I had no problems yet, I would recommend this product to anyone looking for a drop clutch.
