This pad is the best bass practice pad I have played. I have had it about 8 months and use it around 40 minutes daily. It has held up well so far. The rubber pad to protect the clamp on the pedal has come lose, but is an easy fix. The feel is comparable to an actual kick drum and the sound made when hit is fairly quiet. I do kick fairly hard and used it in an apartment all summer with no complaints. It almost always stays put on the carpet while using it. Overall, it is a simple product that works. I recommend it for both warming up before shows and for practicing.

Why why why???

By Alrio

from Coalinga, CA

Comments about Gibraltar GBDP Bass Drum Pad:

I am a little mystified at all the praise in the reviews. I am frustrated with this product. If you attach the pedal as you would on a bass drum rim, the surface of the pad is significantly closer to your beater than it is on a BD. If you try and pull the pedal back a bit and clamp it on in order to get it so it is a more realistic distance and you will be practicing the correct movement, the indentation the rubber pad covers on the base where you clamp on the pedal causes the heal of the pedal to rise up and also the front part of the base of the pad to rise up in a bowing fashion. Then the whole rig travels when you play it. No adjustment possibility. I find it hard to believe this was tested much before putting it on the market. I bought two and I cannot get a simple workout that simulates reality. If you have a chain drive pedal, just clamp it on and notice that the chain is further forward the the pad surface... a design flaw, pure and simple. It's amazing that something so simple and basic could not get right with this product. If anyone has found a solution to this I would like to hear it.

Good...but.....

By Mark

Comments about Gibraltar GBDP Bass Drum Pad:

I like this pad. But it's not perfect...not that anything ever is but sometimes this pad frustrates me. Being a predominentely heavy drummer I of course utilize a lot of heavy hitting and this pad moves back and forth with every hit (think of flicking a tight spring and the resulting oscillation back and forth). Now of course this oscillating stops relatively quickly but can get frustrating when ur playing with a double pedal since ur basically juggling the pad...to a certain extent. Basically I'm saying I wish it was sturdier. Also with reference to a double pedal...the two beaters are unlikely to line up equidistant from the left and right of the pad on either side of the beater. Ideally the left beater would be offset the same distance from the direct center of the pad as the right beater is but with this pad my right beater is more centered (because of the design of double pedals). This causes a slightly different feel in the left and right pedal since they are striking different spots (plus a different sound with each strike since the pad is tunable and is thus tighter near the edges) The last issue I had is that the pad has a sort of layer that gets removed from consistent heavy playing and underneath it's sort of sticky and ends up stiking the beater to the pad with each stroke and resulting in an audible sound (think of ripping a piece of tape from something) when the beater seperates from the pad. I guess this is just a property of the rubber but it gets kind of annoying. Apart from that it pretty much does the trick for the price.

Comments about Gibraltar GBDP Bass Drum Pad:

Very happy with this pad. Set up was a breeze, carpet spikes do a good job of keeping it in place. Responds well and worked perfect with a double pedal. Well worth the money.

Minor flaw

By Justin

from wetumpka, al

Comments about Gibraltar GBDP Bass Drum Pad:

I purchased this in order to be able to practice my double bass without having to be loud and actually have a bass drum in front of me. I have to say that as far as volume the pad is respectably quiet. The pad really seems to stay in place as well, and it appears to be manufactured well. The biggest problem i have with it is the fact that i can't actually attach my pedals to it. I play with Tama Iron Cobra Power Glide double pedals. The problem is that the part of the fixture you hook your pedals to is to close to the pad, when i hook it up my beaters are way to close. On my bass drum i slide my pedals as far forward as possible and make sure my beaters are flat against the head exactly the way you are suppose to. In order to get them to do the same on the practice pad, without adjusting them, I had actually just set my pedals in front of the fixture. This is something that Gibraltar definitely should fix. Its just a small problem but a very important one, because if you practice with your beaters close and then get on your drum set and they are far away, your practice will be worthless. And since i am not able to actually clamp my pedals to the pad if i start to play really fast double base or really hard the fixture may move. As of right now i am not very fast and i don't play very hard, but if you play metal you better be cautious when purchasing this pad.

I own it

By Tanner Crawford

from Vancouver, Washington

Comments about Gibraltar GBDP Bass Drum Pad:

This pad is pretty cool. It is small enough for you to be able to put it in a luggage bag etc. I'm giving it 3 stars because of this. The pad doesn't feel like a bass drum. The Pad is really squishy which means that when you hit it with the beater, the beater hits it 2-3 times very quickly. That and I only got two spurs instead of three.

A Very Sturdy and Quiet Practice Pad

Comments about Gibraltar GBDP Bass Drum Pad:

I recently got a double pedal as a birthday gift and wanted to be able to practice with it for an hour+ without disturbing my family or my neighbors. This pad seemed like the perfect choice. After having played on it for about a month, overall I'm very impressed. The base is pretty substantial, so you don't have to worry about it moving around on carpet. The pad itself is made of thick rubber, which is definitely durable, but I have noticed that using it with plastic or wood beaters wears it in a way that the rubber becomes rough and almost sticky. Think of it like your rubbing your hand on a fine piece of sandpaper. If you switch to felt beaters after this has happened already, I could see some of the fibers sticking to the pad and potentially ruining the beaters altogether, so just be wary of that.

I've also seen some people say that the pad itself is closer to the pedal than the head of a bass drum would be. While this is somewhat true, for me it doesn't feel that different. If you've ever used a pad that actually mounts ON the bass drum itself, the feeling is the same. Also, because the pad has a lot of give, it's not like your hitting a brick wall and having the beater bounce back at you faster than normal. You can really dig in like you can on a regular bass drum head. It just might take a little bit of getting used to.

Overall, this pad is extremely solid. It doesn't move around, the pad will likely never crack, and the adjustable tension is a very nice feature. It's also very quiet. I would guess it to be maybe 70-80 dB max. I only gave it 4 stars just because of the wear on the pad, but it really isn't a big deal. Try it out!

Very good!

Comments about Gibraltar GBDP Bass Drum Pad:

I wanted to use this pad at my apartment so i wouldnt annoy my neighbors. It is great at being quiet. I can practice my d-bass any time of the day now and really helps me improve. I am usually a hard hitter so the pad can shake sometimes but if you adjust it right it'll work fine. Great buy and good price.

It's alright... Better than most.

By RYAN RIVARD

from California

Comments about Gibraltar GBDP Bass Drum Pad:

I bought two of these for each of my TAMA Speed Cobra pedals to practice like using two bass drums since I don't want to annoy the neighbors everyday playing. They are pretty quiet and feel better than various other pads I've tried. The issue I have with this pad is that if you're a heavy hitter like me this pad gets aggravating quickly. I have a nice thick carpet I practice on and if you put in the screws into only raises the pad off that ground and when you hit it, it is quiet shaky. I'll probably need to invest in dumbbells or something to weigh them down. The pads shake so much when going faster speeds. My pedal stays nice and snug on it and it does try to move away or slide away from the pad which is a super big plus for me. Just how much it shakes is truly annoying. If they could stay still this would be the perfect bass drum pad.
