For my purposes...

By tim huggins

from Portland, Oregon

I wanted to set up an extra practice rig at home. Often, I have my MarkBass 102 just sitting around, so I was looking for an inexpensive way to power it so I could sit around and play in my rec room (my main bass rig is rarely at home. Most often on a van, or in a studio, etc). Anyway, it's perfect. I wasn't expecting much, but it really has a lot of power (way more than I need for just screwing around), and the tone is very malleable. PLUS it has a headphone out, for when the wife and kid are sleeping... I'm nothing but impressed.

Mouse that roared

By ronald rangel

from Chicago,IL

This is a delightful little amp. The reasons I like it: It is small enough to fit in a messenger bad or briefcase, it is very clean sounding so you can imprint your own tone, it seems like more than 200 watts into 4ohm, its price is crazy low. This amp made the competition in this price range at Guitar Center seem quite feeble. The other 200-250 Watt heads couldn't keep up. It was nice to find the sonic leader was also the price leader. Of course if you're blasting a 8x10 then look elsewhere but for 12 or 2x10 it is fantastic. I haven't tried it with a 2x10 and 1x15 yet but want to. G-K products seem to have a good reputation and this looks and feels sturdy.

Pint Size Powerhouse

By Frank Podczerviensky

from Virginia

I have this amp mated to a GK 115MBE cabinet. Together, they make an awesome little rig! This amp packs plenty of punch for its size and the sound is clean, clear and tight. No muddiness. I wasn't able to demo this amp in the store, so I was a little worried it wouldn't sound as good as my small but excellent sounding Ampeg 1x12 combo. I was pleasantly surprised with the MB200 and look forward to many years with it. It appears well-built, and you just can't beat it for portability.

Everyone should have one .............

from Ohio

Here's the bottom line - it sounds like my late-'80s 400RB that I had to retire from the road after YEARS of use. That 400RB is still my home amp, and this MB200 goes on the road with me now. It's SOOOOO portable. It sounds GREAT. Plenty of thick bass, but it's clear. Everything works as advertised; the contour switch re-voices the amp with a scooped tone - it works really well when needed. Don't be put off by the lack of a separate input gain control; you have a volume control on your bass. I usually use the input pad, but I don't play a lot of loud music. The times I've used it without the pad, it still sounded great. It sounds great with my acoustic bass fiddle and my electric basses; it's hard to get a bad tone out of it. The GK pre-amp controls are simple to use. If you need more power and features, get the 500W version. For portability, this can't be beaten; it easily fits into a small gig bag; it is a great piece of equipment. For what you get, the price is ridiculously low.

Great amp but not for me.

By Steve K

from Payson, Utah

I first saw this amp on the talkbass forum as a banner ad. I was looking for a second amp for practice and this one seemed like it would be perfect. It is amazing that you can pack so many features in such a small package. I loved the size, weight, price and power. I was also impressed at how solid it was. I did have a problem with the tone. I play a Fender Jazz bass into a Markbass mini cmd 121p. I totally love the tone I get and was hoping for something similar. When I got the GK MB 200 I tried it with 2 cabs I have; an Avatar B210 and a Markbass new york 121p. I wasn't getting the tone I wanted with either one. I did spend a lot of time EQing it. I would have given it a 3.5 but rounded up to a 4. It's because I couldn't find the tone I wanted. I really wanted to love this amp, but ended up returning it.

Light weight and powerful

By Kevin Palmer

from Round Rock Texas

This is coming from a guitar player who was tired of carrying a rack system with heavy but good power amp to auditions and small jams.l had got the idea from using my Line-6 pod into a practice amp and saying"this sound purdty good to bad l dont have more power".Then l started thinking about the mini power amps the size of a stomp box and thought if l had more watts then l could drive my 2-12 and maybe my 4-12? looked around to find a larger watt amp, nothing for guitars that was priced right for me so l stared looking at Bass amps, cause watts is watts right! Wow that was it l ordered on line 3 days later lt was here and l like it allot just what l hope for clean power and light weight and great price ta boot.

This little head is a scary monster

By Marcelo Verrie

from Buenos Aires, Argentina

I bought the Gallien-Krueger MB200 200W Ultra Light Bass Amp Head, a couple of weeks ago, and I̴m really amazed. I̴m playing bass for most than twenty years in small and mid venues and teaching at home, and It̴s the best bass head a had the oportunity to try. It̴s conected to a Hartkee Xl 2x10 bass cabinet. The sound is perfect, so clear and deep, it really cuts in any frecuency, so you can really hear the bass in any song. Think in the price, the sound, and the light weight of this bass head if you will change your bass amp. It really worth it.

GK MB 200

By Jim Hobbs

from West Linn Oregon

I own several bass amps & I played a small room with this head along with a 2 ten cabinet. Everyone was amazed by it's size & how nice it sounded with my bass. I ran it flat. My intention is to use it to run my SPD 30 Roland Octopad. My thoughts are it could cut any room with in reason when DI'd. The big hope is that it is a reliable piece of equipment. The weight & size enables it to fit in a small laptop case with room for the power cord, cables, & at 2 pounds makes this amp a winner for this aging rocker. The price point is also excellent.

Best $250 I ever spent!!!!

By bassgroove71

from Cordova, TN

I bought this amp head, taking a chance and hoping it sounded descent. I was looking for a light weight amp head to reduce the amount of overall weight I had to haul. When I got this in, I plugged it in and used just my headphone to simply test the overall sound quality. The sound was so incredibly warm, I am very surprised. Next, I plugged it up to my cabinet (2-12" in a poted box with a handling load of 160watts @ 4 ohms). I only turned this amp head up to about level 3 and my son came running up from the back of the house. He asked me what was shaking the house down...lol. I have only turned this up half way, but the sound and tone quality is so immaculately warm. I have never owned an all tube amp but I did play through a friend's once. That is the general sound quality you get from this head. And, it's only 2.5lbs, fits right in my gear bag! My suggestion, if you have been pondering whether or not to get this, go for it! You will not be disappointed. It's all the quality and warmth of Gallien Krueger, at a fraction of the cost and size!
