I bought this head as a spur of the moment decision to go along with the matching Backline 4 by 10 cabinet I had just purchased. Unleashing this little half-stack on an unsuspecting club while hammering a mid-70's Rickenbacker 4003 literally caused jaws to drop. This head is sonically very transparent; it faithfully reproduces every nuance of the player without unduly coloring the tone. For smaller venues, this amp is MORE than enough. The head comes with some standard tone-shaping options, with the added features of an effects loop, XLR output and A/B channels that make life for the gigging musician (AND soundmen) a lot easier. I've used the "overdrive" channel a bit, and I have to say it beats a pedal hands down in reproducing low-end frequencies. Overall, 350 watts in a head that both sounds nice and won't send you to a chiropractor after hauling it around is definitely a win/win situation. Buy it!

I really like the sound (especially with the goldline speakers) but... I've tried a few of these, owning 1, and they commonly have some issues. It's just a really touchy amp (crackling, cutting out, sometimes even getting distortion without changing the channels)... but I have lent it out with no problems reported. I wouldn't use this as my main go-to amp. I just keep it in my home studio to practice on at low volumes - sounds really nice for that. I do like the direct out for recording. It's affordable but if you can afford more, consider something else.

Plenty loud

By Nathan Sharp

from North Bend, WA

This amp is good for volume, but it begins to over power my speakers after 3 quarter volume. I like the overdrive setting. If you do buy this amp, the O.D. sounds best when you put bass at 9 oclock, trebble at 3 oclock, and cut out all mids completly. This is also a very versital amp. You can sound like the bassist from Iron Maiden, Deep Purple and Lady Gaga. The tone is up draq for me, very solid. Slightly less important, it seems as if you could drop it from four feet onto cast concrete. It am as certain that this will not fail as I am that the sun will rise tomarow. And to non-players, it looks like (no matter how bad you are) you are a professional player.

Excellent for first amp head

By ROBERT CHILDRESS

from Baltimore Md

Ive been playing bass for about 2 years now...This is my first amp head...I have this amp hooked up to the GK 410 MBX, and I am very satisfied with the performance. I am in a Heavy Metal band, so i play really hard, and this amp head is working out perfectly. I have used this amp for about 2 months now, and through many practices and two gigs, i have had no issues at all. If you use this amp head to a 8ohm cab like I am now, you only get about 140 watts, but it is still VERY loud. I plan on adding the 115 MBX soon and ill be getting the full 300 watt power that this amp puts out at 4ohms...Excellent amp head for the beginner bassist looking to play small gigs...

AMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAZING!!

By Austin

from Muncie, Indiana

I am a Shophmore at a school in eastern Indiana. I use this head whith the schools 300 Watt Cab. This thing could handle probably any tone you want. I would recommend this head to anyone who wants an amazing tone for their bass. It sounds PERFECT with my 63 Jazz Bass. Trust me, this is a product worth buying!!

Long Time User

By Phil

from Myrtle Beach

I bought this head USED over 5 years ago at my local GC because the price was right and it was the power I needed. Years later and 500+ shows later it still works great. Just ordered an MB500 to get a little more push, but this will still be on the road with me just in case. EQ - Really lets you shape a good solid tone. I play 5 and 6 string basses (Ibanez SR535 & SR506, respectively) tuned to drop B typically. It gives me all the deep thick lows with tons of bright pop on the highs. I've been able to get great sounds for church music, hard rock, pop, and what I mostly play.... metal!!! \m/ Effects loop is handy (used it for several years) and the direct out is perfect for large venues with sweet systems. It has never overheated on me, cut out, anything. Love it. It amazes me that I bought it used and it still hasn't had any problems. Only downfall is the fan placement. If you plan on rack mounting this you'll need to leave an open rack spot above it or it'll prolly overheat.

The sound I wanted for the price i can afford

By Eric Brock

from Bloomington IN

I bought 2 of these... 1 for my Ampeg 15 cab, and the other for my Ampeg 4 10's cab... and my rig sounds ridiculously good for the price there are a few advantages to having 2... 1, you can eq them different, to fine tune one for the 15 and one for the 4 10s. 2, I like to use the GK footswitch on the 4 10s amp, having the 4 10s cab distorted and the 15 clean really keeps the bass sound beefy while distorted... oh yeah 3, If one ever dies, or over heats, the show will go on!

Garbage Equipment

By Chris

from New York, NY

I bought this head because of the price and portability. My band plays a show in NYC about 1 -2 times a month. It didn't even last 1 year before the fan stopped working. At that point it wouldn't even last through a 30 minute set before shutting down. Poorly made equipment. 2 months after that the GK 410 cabinet I have also died. Spend more money and get better made equipment. You'll thank me later.

solid head

By jacqui StGermain

from Denver, Colorado

I started with a Gk backline 250.It was a good amp, just needed more power. This delivers. Used a 600 and a 410 cab(instructors rig) while learning to play, and have stayed with it ever since. It makes everything from my "entry level" Ibanez, to my Warwick Corvette 4 active sound great . wide range of tone controls. had occasional over-heating problem. but I bought the rack ears(it's in a open audiorack, NOT a travel case) and the extra airflow around the unit seems to have solved that

Timex of Amps

By Big John

from San Antonio, TX

I bought this about 3 years ago and have 150+ gigs on it not to mention all of the rehearsals. This thing is the Timex of amps. It has been dropped several times by other band members but keeps on ticking. Sounds great too. The only thing I would add to it is a DI level adjustment and rack ears.

VERY good for the price

By btk bassist

from auburn, ga

i needed a good rig cause m band started playing shows and my 60 watt combo just wasn't suiting me. so i decided to look on line and order something. i wasn't to sure on this because i never played it but just trusted the reviews. when i got this and the blx 410 and 210 i plugged them up and bow was i glad i got this. it says its only 300 watts but i beg to differ, it sounds way louder! im so glad i did order this, the only problem is the fan. its in a very awkward place, but i can deal with it just dont leave it on for along time. besides that its perfect
