Overview

Three decades ago, the G&L L-2000 bass served notice that company founder Leo Fender  was ready to disrupt the status quo. The bold, brash L-2000 and the L-2500 five-string that followed have always been an exhilarating experience for players with the skill to pull it off. Now the new M-2000 and M-2500 harness that power with a sonic palate that will surprise and delight new and die-hard G&L fans alike.

Leo's MFD humbuckers have always been the heart of the iconic L-Series. In the all-new M-Series, these powerhouses are voiced to fully exploit a studio-quality 18v preamp system specially designed by G&L's R&D wizard Paul Gagon. With an LF442 chip, 100v poly caps, 1% metal film resistors and big, fat signal traces on the mil-spec circuit board, this preamp reveals everything the player and the instrument have to offer.

And there's even more:
¢ Primary volume and pan controls to explore the full range of sounds available between the two pickups
¢ 3-band EQ with peripherally placed, center-detent, reduced-diameter knobs
¢ An impeccable, familiar "feel" of the instrument in the hands and on the shoulder

For slapping, rolling back some highs and dialing up some lows, coupled with a mid-range boost, magnifies the intensity that Leo's humbuckers are famous for. Need more definition for fingerstyle? Just bring up the treble and roll off the bass for a nuanced and detailed sound. Headroom? The new M-Series preamp harnesses the power of those meaty MFD humbuckers without a hint of clipping. The best tools are simple, intuitive and easy to use, and that's exactly what you'll find in the new M-Series package.

Various styles and colors available. Please see drop down menu to choose.

Been playing guitar and bass in front of people for money since the age of 14, and now I'm 48, so this is not my first rodeo. Also, I'm a cheapskate, so price to quality ratio is huge to me, and I am NOT a huge G&L guitar fan. So, with that in mind, here goes.
This bass is Indonesian and does NOT come with any gig-bag. That being said, it has fit and finish between "American Standard" and Mexican source instruments, and it will fit cases and gig bags that a jazz bass will.
The set-up out of the box was pretty darn close. I made very minor adjustments, and now it plays like butter...the bass feels solid and sweet, and is surprisingly not too heavy (I got the swamp-ash). I love the neck, and with smaller hands, that's saying a lot for a 5 string. Great clearance for the higher frets. Right hand falls straight to the proper position, and the body reliefs and contours are in the right places. Balance is great, no diving. Hardware-wise, it's a better quality than a lot of on-shore instruments I've played over the years, and the bridge is a big, thick, solid chunky piece of metal that I will never want or need to change.
Now for the best part: the sound. Whatever you play, this bass has the ability to give you your sound with a G&L attitude. The electronics in this bass are, and not just for the price, outstanding. DEAD QUITE thru a PA set for 1,000 people.18v gives you the headroom, and this thing has warmth, clarity, and sustain. The eq/tone controls work darn well, and the center detent on all rotary controls is a great feature. I love the big humbuckers, and I honestly can't formulate a negative statement about the sound and feel of this instrument, especially considering I got it off a SDOD. Bottom line, it's actually worth the LIST price...seriously. At the every-day price you will not find this quality, this feel, and most important of all, this SOUND, with anything else.

I used to play a L2500 Tribute and LOVED it. It was stolen, and I bought a M2500 to replace it because I could not get a L2500 at the time, and needed a replacement ASAP. At first, all was fine. Then the battery ran out. NO SOUND!!! Are you kidding me? This is absolutely a fatal design flaw. I am surprised no one has mentioned that on the reviews I have read. Am I crazy? Or is this just me? Plus, Not only do you HAVE to carry around 2 extra 9 volt batteries, but also a small Phillips head screw driver, because there is not other way to get to the battery when it dies on a gig and you are standing there with your you-know-what in your hand.
Additionally, after about a year, the wood in the neck dried to a point where it felt like playing a Sears and Roebuck from the 60's.The frets were poking out on each side of the neck. I had to have someone re-do the frets, but apparently, no one knows how to do that anymore either, so after a couple different attempts, it still feels kind of cheap.
Sorry Leo. My Man. Love you, but I think they miss you at the factory since you are gone...

Comments about G&L Tribute M2500 5-String Electric Bass:

I recently had a chance to spend an extended period of time with a friends M2500, so when I saw this scratch and dent at an awesome price I had to jump on it. I have a custom order American made G&L SB-2 that I purchased two years ago, and I can honestly say the Indonesian M2500 exhibited much better quality control right out of the box. The SB-2 had a neck that required sanding, frets that needed dressed and no cavity shielding whatsoever. I found the neck on the M2500 perfect with no sharp frets. Initial set up was impressively close to my ideal with only the intonation requiring attention. The nut notches did required a small amount of polishing however to get the strings working smoothly. The wiring looks like a rats nest under the cover, but conductive shielding paint is present and the bass is dead quiet. In my opinion, tone is so subjective that its description has limited value, but to my ears, this bass growls like no other. It will have rock and roll oozing out of your cab. This is a bass that I will keep for the long term. It's quality isn't top shelf, as you shouldn't expect it to be at this price point, but it requires no upgrades for long term satisfaction. I would definitely recommend this bass.

Comments about G&L Tribute M2500 5-String Electric Bass:

Was advertised as mint but had a giant crack in the body below the controls. Like it had been dropped. It was packed well, and the box had no damage, so the assumption is that it was put in the box that was. So, not mint. This was the last of this finish in stock, so I can't speak to anything other than what was advertised was not delivered.

Used to own the USA model 4 string. Decided to
try the Tribute series. I am happy with the construction and quality. Sound is real good.
I would like to see a 35" scale version w/ a slightly wider neck tho.

Comments about G&L Tribute M2500 5-String Electric Bass:

I was originally going to purchase the 4-string version of this but it wasn't available for shipping for two more months so I sprung for the 5-string. I have a Bachelor's Degree in music and have been involved in professional music for a number of years as a musician, running sound for large venues, studio and AVL sales and installation. For the price, this is the best bass I've played and heard. The feel and sustain are wonderful. I have a G&L ASAT semi-hollow electric guitar and was so impressed with that guitar that I trusted the company with this model. I've never purchased a guitar online as I always want to play it and hear it first and I almost never write a review. However, based on the reviews and what I've come to expect from this company I went for it. So glad I did! Even though it's a 5-string, it plays easier than many 4-strings I've played. I'm teaching a 12 year old on this bass and without ever playing a stringed instrument in his life, he picked this up and could play it right away. No buzz, easy to play, great neck feel. Electronics are superb and have great adjustment options with three different controls for the pickups, overall tone control and volume. I love the recessed pots to find the center of the pickup knob control and use it as a "home base" for adjusting tone. BUY THIS BASS! Just remember to get a strap and case. Don't worry about those who complain about it not coming with a case. Anyone who wants a bass at this level probably has their own case or wants the option to choose what works best for them, so you should appreciate the lower cost. Buy the case you want with the savings. I do wish there was an easy access plate for changing the battery. My biggest complaint with bass manufacturers is that they use screws on plates. Batteries seem to die right when you need them to work for you and having to find a screwdriver and mess with that when you're in a hurry to swap a battery is annoying. I don't believe I received a manual. You may have to look online to figure out what each knob does if you can't figure it out on your own and you don't receive a manual.

Comments about G&L Tribute M2500 5-String Electric Bass:

I have played a lot of 5 strings and have to say that this is one of the best basses you can get for under 1K. Usually if you shop well enough you can get it for half that. The electronics are worth that alone! It does have a thick neck, but if you set it up right and get the action low it will still play like a dream. It has a growl for days and adaptability to any style of music. Just a rock solid bass that sounds great through any amp.

If you missed the deal of the day, it's still a very good deal at the regular price. Same electronics as on the US made model and the workmanship of the bass is very good. If you want an excellent 5-string and don't want to pay a fortune, this is it. I paid full price and have no regrets.

Comments about G&L Tribute M2500 5-String Electric Bass:

I Recently purchased this bass, and man i love it. First off the Finish on everything is great. Some people get scared off by the non made in america versions of basses, but G&L has it together. There quality control must be great, the finish on the fingerboard and frets is outstanding. Ive seen alot of made in mexico fenders with lifted frets or horrble fingerboards, but this bass just blew me away for the same price. The 18 volt preamp really pumps it out, from rock to R&B it covers everything. G&L has got to have my favorite bridge, these bridges are meaty yet aren't an eyesore. I love the locking saddle design. If your in the market for a bass in this price range, don't hesitate, It's a great buy.
