Overview

If your holy grail is faithful alnico single-coil tone with modern refinements and superb craftsmanship, the Legacy makes for an excellent choice.

The Legacy’s vintage-spec CLF-100 Alnico V pickups have that unmistakable chime and quack reminiscent of the best examples from the late ‘50s, thanks to the work of G&L's Paul Gagon. Gagon found his inspiration reviewing original prints stored in Leo’s private laboratory at G&L, but that was just the start.

In the early '80s, Gagon was an R&D engineer at another company when he was tasked with finding out what was so special about the early bolt-on guitars many players raved about. Gagon analyzed many examples of what were considered holy grail guitars, spending time out on the shop floor talking to builders still working in the pickup department since the ‘50s, all on a quest to discover where the real mojo was – and wasn’t.

What he learned from the builders matched his own engineering analysis. You see, back in the day, the actual spec of pickups coming down that old production line varied considerably. That meant coming up with the right specs for the Legacy pickups was more challenging than simply following the prints. Gagon’s persistence paid off as the Legacy garnered rave reviews from both players and magazines like Guitar Player and Guitar World.

This axe is no slave to the past, however, starting with Leo’s PTB (Passive Treble and Bass) system which functions on all three pickups for dramatically more variety than the vintage setup. What’s more, the Legacy features a Leo Fender-designed Dual-Fulcrum vibrato, a work of engineering art which allows bending up or down with unsurpassed stability, while offering a silky feel through its beefy aluminum vibrato arm.

The Legacy is all about honest, classic alnico tone complemented by Leo’s own modern refinements. And now, it’s available at a price within reach of every working musician. Case sold separately.

These GL Tributes have a reputation for smoking most Fender products. They are an incredible bang for the buck and the fit and finish blows away MexiFenders and is on-par with the USA Fenders. The problem is the setup from the factory: neck is ruler straight with no relief, a lousy nut with buzzing at the top frets, frets a bit rough in need of polishing, bridge off-center with strings off-center on fretboard, tone of the GL designed non-USA Alnico V pickups with PTB is like daggers in the ears. Problems are fixed by relieving the truss rod, replacing nut, playing-in the frets for a few days, pulling the bridge, plugging the holes for the studs & drilling new ones to relocate the bridge, and re-wiring the PTB circuit so it isn't so horribly harsh and bright. GL Fanboys will tell you the PTB is great and the guitar has "clarity". That's codespeak for the tone is way to bright & you have to roll back to 2-3 on the tone pot to get stratty tone. WAAAAAY too bright, WAAAAY too much treble. Harsh & clangy. This can be fixed with some pot/cap swaps, so plan on tweaking this guitar to make it all it can be. The guitar requires a lot of set-up work but once it's done you have a guitar that plays like it cost $1000 without the $1000 price tag. Don't buy it unless you want a project.

        QUALITY at a GREAT price

Comments about G&L Limited Edition Tribute Legacy Electric Guitar:

I bought this as a buffer/insurance policy to protect my best guitars from my children. My best are still better ( Parkers) but these G&L are spectacular mid level guitars. I have owned Fender, (MIM & MIA), Gibson, and Parker, settling on the later. STRAT profile like designed and expected. Outstanding value, fun , and worth every penny. SERIOUSLY great product as expected from CNC machines whether in USA or Indonesia... the programs carve the body/neck. Only mod was Sperzel tuners bc once go Sperzel you never go back.

Comments about G&L Limited Edition Tribute Legacy Electric Guitar:

Wonderful guitar, easy to play, came pretty well setup right out of the box. I did a few small adjustments to the pickups and changed the strings to what I like and we were good to go . Sounds great though my Vintage 30 watt Crate tube amp. Sweet looking and put together well ,I like the satin finish neck and the tremolo is nice, I like that the tremolo arm can be tightened so it stays were you want it to stay ! I am very happy with this guitar. It sits along side my other guitars and it is the first one to be picked up and played with everyday .

Comments about G&L Limited Edition Tribute Legacy Electric Guitar:

I have to agree with most commenting. This guitar sounds great. But...... , and this is not a terrible thing, It came with #10 strings on it which I didn't know at the time. Every string was pinched in the nut slots. So I just used strings as files and widened the slots. Helped the tuning soooooo much. I found out it came with 10s when I put 9s on it and springs had to be let off O_O. Anyway I think it still would have pinched if it came with 9s on it. After that little bit of set up, intonation and, a neck adjust it plays and sounds better than my American strat in my opinion. It will take 9 or 10s now. It has a flatter neck like a Les Paul which I like very much. Has American electronics. Don't hesitate to by this guitar. With a little adjustment work you'll have a keeper that plays and sounds great. I doubt I'll buy another Fender because of this guitar. And... for some reason because of the extra tone capabilities - it likes some of my effects that the strat doesn't.

A really terrific guitar for the money. No sense in spending an extra $300 just to have Fender on the headstock. Wide range of tones from the pickups and it pairs well with my Vox amp. A little disappointed that it was manufactured in Indonesia and not the U.S., but them's the breaks.
