Overview

The Fulltone FatBoost 3 effects pedal replaces previous versions 1 and 2, marrying everything that people liked about both versions while improving on them in a few key areas:

¢The FB-3 brings back the v1 11-position Gain control to give the ultimate in control over the FETs
¢The FB-3 adds one more stage of FET so that the pedal does not invert your signal
¢The FB-3 cures v1's huge bass increase and dull high-end issues, but allows those sounds as well should you so desire

The Fulltone FatBoost 3 is a discrete, Class-A, FET (Field-Effect-Transistor) guitar pedal offering up to 35dB of non-distorted gain without changing your signature sound, unless you want that. You can fatten/distort your tone, brighten or mellow up the sound, add or subtract bass, and even add harmonics. The FB-3 has true-bypass switching (via the Fulltone 3PDT) and incorporates a super-bright LED without the loud popping sound thanks to Fulltone's proprietary anti-pop circuitry.

FET's can behave like tubes in a properly designed circuit. They can clip (distort) in a pleasing way instead of being buzzy or spiky-sounding (like a transistor) and can also add a subtle limiting to the signal which can even out the volume making your live and recorded tones more pleasing to the ear. If you're a recording engineer, you'll be happy to know you can use the Fulltone FatBoost 3 on everything from acoustic and electric guitar to electric bass, and even snare drums.

The FatBoost 3 pedal works great in front of non-Master Volume tube amps to goose them into submission, as well as through Master Volume amps to drive them much harder than possible with just your guitar alone. It also works very well on bass, acoustic guitars (with pickups), and is ideal at the end of a pedal board effects chain to completely eliminate the tone loss caused by long guitar cable runs back to your amp. Doing so will allow the use of 50' (or longer) cable lengths with no signal degradation whatsoever.

This version of the Fulltone FatBoost (FB-3) incorporates all of the things that people have loved about previous versions of these effects pedals in the past without any of the shortcomings. It brings back the 11-step FET Bias Drive knob that was missing from the FB-2. You'll notice that this knob makes a slight scraping noise when you turn it. Fear not, as that is totally normal, and is simply the sound of the Bias changing and settling on the FET MuAmp. The FatBoost 3 gives you the feeling that your amp is cranked at living room volumes so your playing is more dynamic and notes hold on longer without being distorted. It makes up for all the tone loss that (even true-bypass) pedals impart to your sound, especially if you have a lot of pedals on your pedal board.

The Fat Boost 3 is not an overdrive and not really a booster...

By darkhorse

from N TX

Comments about Fulltone FatBoost 3 FB-3 Guitar Effects Pedal:

To be honest I have come and gone on this pedal, using it in different ways. This is just not really an OD or a booster for a temporary gain up. Most are just using it wrong, I was one of them. Having recently refitted my entire board I had left this pedal off as I was running a long chain already. I started to realize even w my true-bypass and buffer circuit pedals my tone was lacking its full body and full range. The effects were doing their job but something was just not right. Despite using gold hard couplers, and only 1 6" cable + my main lines running heavy Core X-2 gold cables I was getting some signal loading on my box off signal. I went back and reread Mike Fuller's (Fulltone) issue on the Fat Boost and I decided to use it like he recommended, at end of chain, to bring back the signal loss and stop the long chain degrade cap load. Seriously, this pedal brought it all back and made everything sound better. It stays on all the time, I recommend not using it to try and drive anything!! In fact, I keep the Bass up, the treble rolloff full up, the drive on notch 1, and the vol just a little above unity. This makes everything sound better. My current chain is Vox JS-Wah, new Whammy (used for harmonizer modes), Vox JS-OD (the ICE9), v4 OCD, Satchurator, Rocktron Metal Planet, T-Rex Vipe Vibe, and the Fat Boost 3 into amp in. (quality half stack tube head) No matter the chains on or offs, one box, none, or several, the FB3 enhances and improves the signal without adding more OD or clipping to the signal. Reminds me of the enhancement of a BBE maximizer but without the phase correcting software(another essential box for the loop). If you run a substancial pedalboard into a quality tube head do try this puppy at the end of the chain, I'll bet you leave it on.

Perfect amp pusher.

By Matt

Comments about Fulltone FatBoost 3 FB-3 Guitar Effects Pedal:

If you're looking for just a touch of overdrive, (Whereas a tube screamer is too much) this pedal is perfect. I play hard rock and metal and needed just a slight rhythm/lead boost. My amp tone is right where I like it. But needed to push a little harder to get those harmonics this pedal did the trick. Thickened up the tone instead of shaping it. This pedal didn't take out any low or high end like other OD pedals do. I bought the wylde OD and the tube screamer for comparison. Although those pedals have great characteristics, the FAT BOOST blew those pedals away.

Fulltone Fat Boost 3

By paul

from N Texas

Comments about Fulltone FatBoost 3 FB-3 Guitar Effects Pedal:

I've been a fan of Fulltone for some time. I had a v1 OCD and it got traded off in my many pedal board redos of obsessive pedal acquirement syndrome (OPAS), I missed the OCD as having the heavier darker drive I like, so I got a v4 OCD, really wanting the probably better RTO but it was too much. So delighted to have the OCD I went in search of the darker drive push. So to get to the Fat Boost issues: I ran across a 2005 clip of Trower's board before Fuller started creating the OCD, basically for him, leading to the RTO version. Robin was using a Fat Boost (probably a v1) into a Distortion Pro (no longer available) with the gain all down on the Dist and the Fat Boost gain up into the Dist. A fat tone to be sure if you know Robin. So I got the Fat Boost and decided to feed it into the OCD or the OCD into the Fat Boost. I run a really great 100 watter tube head that gets great clean and high gain tones (a user modified Carvin V3). At first I made the classic mistake thinking the Fat Boost was like an OD pedal and naturally cranked the gain level like I had seen Trower use it. Not a good OD dist character at all, by itself the gain was not pleasing clean or dirty. I realized you could feed it into another box like the OCD and tame out the "gain" OR after reading what Mike Fuller said to do w this pedal, I moved it to the end of my chain and turned the gain all the way down, treb up, bass up and volume a little about unity and there was a great sounding clean boost which fed back in tonal lows and brighter full range highs into the signal. Any OD or Dist in front of it gets the clean boost treatment which will retain the unique character of the OD or Dist and add a better low end and sparkle to it while retaining the quality of your signal as if it was plugged right into the amp w a short cable. This is not a must have box, just a little sweetener in the coffee. My amp has two clean boost post preamp circuits which lift up and preserve my OD or gain boxes but having this at chain end hits the pre-amp in and pushes it. Not as an OD but more as a fidelity booster. True some of my dist do not need it but it is there for an option. My main OD is now the amazing ICE9 JS-OD I am still debating where to put or keep the OCD, I think after the ICE9 and before the Fat Boost before any heavy gains and the ICE9 will be by itself when on as that drive is the stuff legends are made.

Loving it!

By B.

from Canton, Georgia

Comments about Fulltone FatBoost 3 FB-3 Guitar Effects Pedal:

This is a great clean boost pedal. The pedal will provide a tad bit of dirt when asked for. It opens your tube amp wide open. If set just right it can sound like a vacuum tube or what may be better described as a Star Wars "Life Saber" faintly in the background. I would call it a phenomena - but it's actually the Field Effect Transistor working your tubes. I bought the Fulltone OCD at the same time & in comparison the OCD is much gainier with allot more hi-end & midrange. This pedal doesn't color your amp's voice much at all like the OCD & other pedals. When wide open, the FB-3 sounds pretty rock n'roll but without a bunch of ridiculous unusable gain. Hi & Low EQ comes in handy while allowing to tweak the last drop. Quality, construction and signal running through is tip-top. I could see why many would consider this a perfect boost pedal. If you want to get the most from your tube amps true voice - this pedal's for you. If your looking for another overdrive pedal or something with alot of gain, look at the Fulltone OCD.

Great for bass

By rhopper

from San Antonio, TX

Comments about Fulltone FatBoost 3 FB-3 Guitar Effects Pedal:

Simple pedal I use to push the pre amp tubes in my amp or a quick boost when needed as I only play on passive P-Bass. Works perfectly. Nice to have some EQ and a little bit of dirt available if needed. The stated clean setting in the manual is simple and nails a clean boost. Very well constructed as I feel it will be with me for a long time. Pricey, but well worth it for what I need it to do.

Really Good pedal

By Izzy (Daniel)

from Austin, Texas

Comments about Fulltone FatBoost 3 FB-3 Guitar Effects Pedal:

This pedal is pretty amazing, it makes your guitar sound so much thicker with a nice bluesy tone. Compared to the Fulltone Fat Boost 2, it has alot more treble be it bass or guitar. It's a little pricey and not necessarily necessary for alot of songs but is a nice add for your pedal collection.

Awesome at any "drive" level! Perfect as a boost, treble boost, or overdrive. Very versatile with the "bass" and "treble" controls. Small footprint leaving you more room for more on your pedalboard.

Fat Boost 3 Fulltone

By paul

from N Texas

Comments about Fulltone FatBoost 3 FB-3 Guitar Effects Pedal:

Probably the most unknown great pedal out there. I do not use it normally but as a unqiue transparent clean boost, line driver, tone enhance push into the OCD and BEFORE my heavy gain pedals, Just killer. Always stays on as it improves the signal quality and tone. Price is great. These two pedals are keepers on my board. Gets me the coolest Trower tones ever w/ the OCD set dark and low gain.
