Overview

The SmallBox 50W guitar head features two footswitchable channels with separate gain and volume controls. The amp has a shared EQ and FX loop. The first channel is voiced like the classic Plexi amps of British fame. It cleans up very nicely with the guitar volume, going from clean-ish to crunch to that famous Plexi-like growl. The second channel has that famous Friedman higher-gain distortion and crunch that we all love. This is a lot of amp in a 50-watt package.

The SmallBox takes pedals very well and loves boosts, overdrives, phasers, flangers, tremolos, wahs, etc. It also has ultra transparent series FX loop that takes time-based FX pedals and rack units equally well.

Handwired in the USA.

Comments about Friedman Small Box 50W 2-Channel Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Nails the Plexi tone and gives even more when needed. I found that the EVH Celestions match perfectly with it for a great overall rock/blues tone. The cleans are great and I believe this amp to be worth every penny and more. The amp itself is loud loud loud but can be dialed down for at home use. Couldn't be happier with the choice. Thanks.

Mecca of Tone

Comments about Friedman Small Box 50W 2-Channel Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I have been playing for over 30 years, currently own a Peavey JSX combo and a multitude of strats, one LP and an EVH Wolfgang. My fave guitar players range from EVH, George Lynch (most 80s guitar players), David Gilmour, etc. I went to the Hollywood Guitar Center which has numerous high end amps. I ended up playing the Friedman BE, Pink Taco, Small Box and the Soldano SLO. To my ears, the Small Box was the perfect amp. This amp isn't cheap, but think of all the money you waste buying and selling amps looking for the perfect tone. This is the perfect tone to my ears. All other amps in my past pale by comparison. Besides the tone, this 2 channel amp just FEELS right. It is by far the most dynamic amp I've ever used. You can go from dirty to clean just by picking softer--without even touching the guitar volume knob! The Small Box fills the room with rich tone. Channel 1 (Plexi channel) can be absolutely pristine, or total AC/DC crunch. Run the gain halfway and have a great crunchy rhythm tone, and back off your volume for clean. Channel 2 (BE channel) is my territory. Chords and notes JUMP out of this channel. Forget reverb - add a nice slap back delay in the loop and you are set. My EVH phase and old Tube Screamer round out the front pedals. I also got the Friedman 4X12 cabs which match perfectly. If you want to stop chasing tone, the Friedman line is the way to go.

Best 50 watt head available

Comments about Friedman Small Box 50W 2-Channel Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I've almost had or played every guitar head out there, Bogner, Diezel, Engl, Mesa, etc. This head is in a league of its own. It's a very easy and simple amp to dial in. I LOVE the clean (plexi) channel. It's so natural sounding and gives you the perfect combination of clean to just enough dirt. Add a Tube Screamer and you get this beautiful vintage Hendrix tone. Channel two puts you in Nirvana, from AC/DC to old Van Halen. This head loves foot pedals, very transparent and perfectly mixed. I highly recommend this head for almost every genre of music.

Nearest thing to the Holy Grail of tone.

Comments about Friedman Small Box 50W 2-Channel Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Came in to find a JTM but Keith said try this as I don't buy without touching usually. He brought a Fender Strat Standard and when I first plugged it in I said WOW! I did not even use any special settings but tried channel 1 and 2 and played with gain. He said one of the guitarists from Steely Dan came in and got the Brown Eye 100. 50 is all I need and low volume did not hurt the tone. Soon I'll buy one.
