Overview

The Runt-50 is a versatile 50-watt head that delivers Friedman's legendary tone from a versatile 2 channel amp. The Runt-50 power section is driven by two EL34s and the preamp features four 12AX7s. The American inspired clean channel features volume, bass, treble and a three position bright switch that delivers singing cleans to slightly broken up tone. The heart and soul of the Runt-50 is the overdrive channel, which will take you from classic rock to all out assault. Use the Boost switch and Gain knob to dial in the perfect amount of overdrive. A global presence control shapes the high frequency response of the Runt-50.

Utilizing custom transformers and the cleanest signal path possible, the Runt-50 delivers tight bottom end and articulate midrange. The Runt-50 is ideal for many styles of music from blues to classic rock and heavy metal by merely adjusting the gain and master controls.

Plugging into the Runt-50, you will instantly notice the harmonically rich detailed chords and resonating single note lines. This amp cleans up exceptionally well with the guitar’s volume knob, even with the amp on higher gain settings.

This is the first amp Dave Friedman ever made with a cab simulated XLR output. Comparing this analog circuit to some of the most intricate computer based IRs, Dave achieved a record output you can proudly send to front of house or use in the studio. The XLR output includes a ground lift, level and center / edge of speaker cone simulation switches.

This Runt was designed to take pedals well and loves boosts, ODs, phasers, flangers, tremolos and wahs. The ultra transparent series effects loop takes time-based effects pedals and rack units equally well. The head cabinet features beautiful black tolex, Baltic Birch construction and built to withstand the rigors of the road.

Friedman History:
Dave Friedman is the man behind the signature tones of rock icons Eddie Van Halen, Steve Stevens and Jerry Cantrell. Dave Friedman has been building, modding and repairing amplifiers for many of the world’s biggest stars for the past 25 years. Friedman’s innovative designs and meticulous construction have made him legendary in the world of professional touring musicians while earning him a loyal clientele from all over the world. One of Friedman’s mainstays has been modifying amps to each player’s specific tonal palette, and to consult with other established amplifier companies to improve their own designs.

Dave Friedman’s extensive knowledge and pursuit of tonal superiority inspired him to develop his own series of production amplifiers under the name Friedman Amplification. In the past, having Friedman build or modify your amp required a certain level of notoriety, but now his sonic wizardry is available to everyday players.

Affordable boutique amp

By Crankinamps

from Boston

Pros

  • In your face sustain!

Cons

  • Maybe a wee bit more bottom end?

Best Uses

  • Blues, Rock, and Metal

Comments about Friedman Runt-50 50W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Paid full price at GC Boston and this is a Rippin little amp with Punch, sustain, and lotsa bottom end clarity! Clearer low end than my jubilee 50w and that in your face feel you get from the PT 20 and more expensive models. The classic rock band I gig around with Loves this amp tho loud for some bars. You get more bottom from a closed back 4-12 cabinet. The XLR Recording output works fine and makes it faster to create tracks at home or wherever silently! Wicked cool feature, awesome amp, no issues yet, Try these Amps before you go elsewhere!

I can't believe this amp died within the first 30 minutes...

Comments about Friedman Runt-50 50W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I purchased this amp from my local Guitar Center two days ago. I finally had a chance to try it out with my own rig and it sounded even better than it did in the store...until it suddenly went silent. Fuses are all fine, tubes are glowing, and the amp powers up and makes a slight hum; but it's dead. I checked all the cabling and swapped out another amp in the same chain it it worked fine. Looks like I'll be returning it tomorrow, and probably not looking to get a replacement. Very disappointed.
