Great by itself or with Garageband

I use mine mostly to record tracks, then I bring them into garage band and edit them there. It's a very nice system and the MR8 is easy to use. Buy a 1 gig card to have some room to work with and it's great.

The best place to start

It's not something that I say very often, but it's hard to justify spending less than the $250 it costs to buy a Fostex MR-8 mkII, if you're in the market for an 8-track digital recorder. Sure, you can get a 4-track cassette for less than half the price, but if it's possible to step up to the price, this is your best bet. The unit is very easy to use, though it's a good idea to spend some time with the manual. Some of the more advanced features, like punching in and out and copying parts from one track to another, require a bit of practice. But it's amazing how easy it is to produce great-sounding recordings very quickly. This unit has some shortcomings over more expensive recording decks: For one, it does not have a rhythm section [it DOES have a built-in metronome], but this is not a major problem for me, since I use an Alesis drum machine. [The MR-8 mkII is fully midi, so the timing is perfect.] Of the mastering effects, the delay works best. The big hall reverb is a bit dry and digital. The guitar distortion is no better than okay, but if you're recording distortion, you probably have your own pedal. The 128MB Compact Flash card is completely inadequate, but it's really not a big deal to go out and buy a 1GB or 2GB card -- the MR-8 Mk II supports those capacities. On the whole, this is an amazing product. It wasn't so long ago that you'd have to mortgage the house to buy a digital recording system. Not anymore. This unit is an amazing value, and stands on its own regardless of price.

Only 250 dollars for all of that?

The Fostex 8 track recorder is awesome. It looked confusing as heck at first when I saw a picture of it on this site. But I decided to go for it. I bought it, and I am using it for hours everyday. Don't think you can work it? You can. It's so easy, even I can. I learned how to work every knob and button, and THEN I found the instruction manual. And I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed either. It comes with built-in effects, delay, distortion, damn! The two simultaneous track recording made it easier to record. I play guitar, and my buddy Nick plays bass, and we found it easier to record at the same time so it is more precise. Rock On!!!

Top of the line Multitracker

I have owned this MR8-MK2 for about 7 months now,and its really a fine peice of equipment. You can really get studio sound quality out of this little guy. Its very user friendly after scimming through the manual a bit. The 8 tracks lets you add on lots of instruments. This has pannig, effects editing, punching in and out , deleting tracks , editing tracks, and it even has a built in distortion effect. I definitely dont regret buying this MR8 and I definitely recommend it to everybody who wants good quality and good sounding recorder.

Its worth the price

I am a hip hop artist/producer and i was just looking for something to record and edit. And i have to say this thing blew me away. The quality is good and the usb connection makes it easy to tranfer to a computer for editing. I would recommend this thing to anyone that wants record right away.
