The Fostex FR-2LE is a two-channel field recorder that records BWF or MP3 files in stereo or mono to Type II CompactFlash or Microdrive cards. You get up to 24-bit/96kHz resolution and a two-second pre-record buffer to ensure full-take recording. This is an excellent piece of equipment. I've been using it for over a year now and it does all I ask of it. Particularly useful is the RC battery pack option which allows it to run all day. The level controls take a little getting used to. What seems high while recording turns out to be much lower when you look at the file in Audacity, Amadeus Pro or Garageband, but the noise floor is so low that you can amplify or normalize without much noise intruding.
I use it on location for reporting, for recording music and as a bit bucket backup. CHange the CF card on the fly, and even the battery change is reasonably quick and painless, though the thicker cables on the RC pack require care to tuck them away neatly.
The menu is easy to read except in bright sunlight but the limiter is effective enough in reporter mode.
I like it, and would have another in an instant.
I have used the fostex fr2le now with Mics, line input, and using the built in mics. The sound is solid and clean. The functions are easy to figure out. It does work with a Mac, the manual says Windows ME only. Read the manual.
