Three-way monitors with true tri-amp.

The PM8.4.1 features an 8" woofer, 4" midrange and 3/4" tweeter powered by a 60W, 18W and 18W independent amplifier, respectively, for wider frequency range reproduction - a first for a Fostex PM-series monitor. The built-in channel divider provides ideally overlapped frequency crossovers for smoothest connections between the drivers. The midrange and tweeter are positioned symmetrically on the Left and Right to minimize the physical height of the enclosure boxes as well as to minimize the affect of diffraction. The woofer and the midrange are housed in an individual chamber respectively inside the enclosure box to have little interference between the drivers.

Three-step level adjustments are provided for HIGH at +1/0/-1 dB and LOW at +3/0/-3dB. The diaphragm for the woofer and the midrange is highly rigid with moderate internal loss being made of highly elastic Kevlar papered by Fostex's original engineering to reproduce any type of input source. The tweeter diaphragm is UFLC (Urethane Film Laminated Cloth) soft dome type to reproduce any types of high frequencies keeping its own transparency.

As reviewed by Jim Harrison on 1/29/2014

I bought these as replacements for my venerable JBL 4312A set (so sad to see them go, too), since my studio has shrunk and the 4312's were never really built for near-field use, anyway. I set the PM841's on my worktable using the equilateral triangle (distance apart = distance from listener, top of the woof roughly level with my nose, angled ~30 deg in) layout on a set of Auralex speaker pads and hooked them up. These speakers are designed to use balanced inputs, but they will accept unbalanced connections just fine (my mixer doesn't provide bal out). Short story - I can finally hear all the little nuances that the instruments give to the music as well all the little noises that I was missing before; all without having to crank the volume (as I had to with the JBL's) to hear it without upsetting the cats and wife. Just for S&G, I tried them without the Auralex pads and while the difference isn't life-altering, it is very audible. The pads prevent the table top from acting like an extension of the cabinets, which effectively "bridges" the bass from each into a single sound source. In other words, well worth the cost. The felt pads on the bottom of the speakers are not sonic-oriented - they're only there as scratch prevention.

  • Sound great, very quiet

As reviewed by TANNER on 4/27/2015

These are speakers. They are simple, so this review will be simple. They sound fantastic. That's all there is to it. You can push them and they don't break up, and I haven't had any issues with the dual crossovers. I run these out of a Mackie sub from a Steinberg UR44 (extremely highly recommended interface). Almost silent when they're on, even through the sub in a very quiet room. I got a blemished pair, and they arrived with a few smudges, but the cones, knobs, and connectors were flawless. Zero listening fatigue so far, after a few months. I would buy again in a heartbeat, and you should too. Bargain price for a pair of 3-ways, especially if you buy blemished (which I quite safely did), and you'll have some sweet mains. Not to mention the most badbutt computer speakers EVER when you're not recording.
