Overview

iTrack Solo provides the best solution for recording your instruments and vocals using an iPad. Featuring a Focusrite microphone preamp and an input to record directly from electric guitars, iTrack Solo is the perfect companion for any singer-songwriter wanting to take their demos to the next level. Using the very best in digital audio technology, iTrack Solo will capture your sound with pristine quality. Simply plug in and press record. It couldn™t be simpler.

Since 1985, Focusrite has been a leading manufacturer in the professional audio field. Focusrite mic pres have played a key part in the recording of hundreds of hit records and they'e a top choice of leading artists, recording studios and engineers around the world. This experience has been used to great effect when designing the input section of iTrack Solo, which features a clean, low-noise, low-distortion preamp. iTrack Solo also provides phantom power for professional condenser microphones.

With a guitar input alongside the microphone input, you are free to record both vocals and your instrument simultaneously to separate tracks in your software*. You could even use both a microphone on your guitar and the guitar input at the same time to get a different sound.

Unique halo signal indicators, also found on Scarlett 2i2, let you know that you™ve got a good volume for recording. Red means that your signal is clipping, and that you should reduce the gain. The halo will momentarily turn amber as the signal returns to a healthy level, at which point the halo will turn green again.

A large monitor dial provides a tactile control for the volume of your speakers and headphones, whilst a high-quality headphone amp provides a clean yet loud signal to headphones connected to the front panel socket. The direct monitor switch routes audio directly from the inputs to both the headphone and speaker outputs. This allows you to hear the incoming signal with no latency, which can be distracting and affect your performance.

On the rear panel you will find phono outputs allowing you to connect iTrack Solo to a pair of powered speakers, or to your home Hi-Fi system. The speaker volume can then be controlled using the large dial on the front of iTrack Solo meaning everything you need is within reach.

iTrack Solo will also work with Mac and PC allowing you to record with your desktop or laptop. There is an included version of Ableton Live Lite and Focusrite' Scarlett Plug-In Suite, which provides essential effects for recording “ Reverb, Compression, Gate and EQ.

*Please note that at current, GarageBand for iOS will record two simultaneous inputs to a single stereo track, which cannot be separated using iPad. The two separate signals can be separated by transferring your session to a Mac. Other apps are available which allow recording to two separate tracks simultaneously.

I've been using this device for about 4 months. I love the quality of the audio -- I record 24 bit audio directly to my iPad, something I've wanted to do for a while. I have had no problems with the phantom power driving my AKG C 414 microphone, and the instrument input works beautifully with the old high impedance instruments I have tried. I also rely on the direct monitor switch rather than the switch in my DAW software. The halo indicators are a great way to quickly identify a too-hot signal. I tend to keep it in one place, but don't see any reason why one couldn't use it comfortably in a variety of mobile situations. Note that you need to power this thing via its USB port, and it will NOT charge your iOS device. Not a problem for me, and I think the manufacturer makes that very clear. Positives: For what it is -- a high quality two channel ADC with phantom power targeted at the iOS platform at a very reasonable price point -- I do not believe it can be beat. 5 stars just for this. Negatives: 1. The proprietary cord which connects the interface to an iOS device is very short and rigid. The manufacturer was forced into this length by Apple's standards -- understandable. But what's not understandable is why it's not reversible. It is a rigid, right-angled connector. One should be able to connect the iOS device from either side. As it is, one can only connect it from the right. 2. The headphone out is not nearly powerful enough to drive high impedance headphones, like standard AKG K240's, not even close. A headphone amp is required in order to use this product with such headphones. I use Schiit's Magni amp.

I can't comment on the quality of this product yet because I won't be able to try it until I buy an adapter for my ipad. Even though Apple hasn't made a product with a 30 pin plug in a year and a half, this still ships with the old 30 pin plug instead of the lightning adapter that's been in all ipads and iphones for that long. Hopefully it will work after I get an adapter, but I wanted ay potential future buyers to know about this before purchasing.

Comments about Focusrite iTrack Solo Audio Interface for iPad, Mac and PC:

This device is great but does not work for its intended purpose... iOS 7 and 8 do not comply with this the device so it glitches, skips measures, does not record any audio. I have spent several hours trying different things and I am having no luck.... If you want something to record into your iPad, just get something that plugs into the headphone jack for now, until apple create codes that comply with the device.

Comments about Focusrite iTrack Solo Audio Interface for iPad, Mac and PC:

The iTrack Solo has the features that I needed to accomplish all of my home recording projects. And, not any features that I don't need. I specifically like the gain indicators. Tip (not a criticicsm) - My sound source is a mixer. I had to add a direct box between the mixer and the interface to convert the high impedance mixer output to low impedance and pad the output from the DI by -20dB. After doing so, the fidelity was excellent.

I found this device to be very easy to use. I set it up quickly, plugged in microphones, guitars and keyboards (not at the same time) and was recording very quickly. It makes making demos with clean, noise free takes easy. The circle of red or green around the volume knob on the channel makes it easy to find the best volume for recording. Great little tool!

Comments about Focusrite iTrack Solo Audio Interface for iPad, Mac and PC:

First thing out of the box it seems a bit lightweight/ fragile. Haven't tested it's durability since I'll be treating it very kindly.

Although it's super marketed towards iPad use I use it with my MacBook Pro and it works absolute wonders.

Plug it in and Garageband recognizes it immediately, unlike with other pro mic-pres, where you have to shut off your computer every time you want to connect/disconnect the unit.

Only being able to use EITHER the xlr in OR the line in at one time is too bad, but it was clearly stated so it's not like Focusrite is tricking you. They have world reknowned mic-pres for good reason, sound is crystal clear. The LED noise meter isn't as nice as a traditional line one but it has 3 colors, green orange and red so it's still pretty helpful.

People have been complaining that there are problems using it with their iPad 3. All I can say to these people is that this product IS NOT ADVERTISED TO WORK WITH 3RD GENERATION IPAD. Read better next time, it'll save you time and money.

I got it as a SDD and for the reduced price I'm very happy for it, but the usual price point is a good deal too. You'll be really hard to find something of this sound quality at that price, though functionality is pretty low.

Comments about Focusrite iTrack Solo Audio Interface for iPad, Mac and PC:

The ITrack Solo is great. I was reluctant to buy it b/c of a few negative comments and ratings, but it does everything it said it would.

          A little bit about myself:
          1. I had NEVER recorded anything on my own using a MAC or PC, this is a completely new hobby for me. I've been a musician for 17 years, just never got around to recording.
          2. I had NEVER owned a MAC. Always a PC guy until recently.

So, I got a MAC BOOK PRO about a month ago and wanted to start experimenting w/ Garage Band....

IT COULD HAVE NOT BEEN EASIER! I cannot emphasize that point enough. You just plug it into your MAC BOOK, I PAD, etc, the MAC immediately recognizes it. You simply plug in your guitar/bass and you're ready to rock.
From the time I got the ITRACK out of the box until I started recording was literally 10-15 minutes ( and that was only b/c I read the entire owner's )

I've bought dozens of items from MF over the years, and this is the first item I've ever reviewed. After using it, and recalling all the negative comments on it, I was compelled to share my experience.

The comments stating the product doesn't work well w/ a MAC, or it doesn't work at all, are completely false. Until a month ago, my experience in recording and operating a MAC was ZERO. If I could figure it out, anyone could.

I've recorded 3-4 song already, using the ITRACK exclusively on every one. One song had 12 tracks on it and still no latency issues.

Not a single complaint on my end. It performed exactly how they said it would.
