I own several of these units and use it primarily as a very clean and accurate pre-amp for mid to high ends mikes. I had to replace one unit because the phantom power just gave out! It is made in China and the quality is apparently not much better than the Behringer line. But the classic Focusrite sound is there and that is what you are paying for. I can understand why this is a clearance item because the digital out (SPIDF!) is quite dated and the upgrade board is clearly not worth the price. I really only bought this because I needed to match the other unit for stereo. You can do better for a few dollars more.
Man, this unit does exactly what I want. I was having trouble with vocals cliping because the singer in my band has a wide dynamic range of singing. This does wonders, The eq is basic but very nice especially in adding some lower end. I run my audix i5 through it when i track drums and it sounds wonderful. The pre on this is crisp and full bodied, has everything you could want out of a pre/compressor.
I love this thing. The compressor rocks, powerful and tight, the preamp sounds clear and crisp, and its a nice looking piece of gear! Us it on some powerful vocals, or for mixing down your tracks. Focusrite has always made good stuff, and continues thier reputation! The price is easy also, so why not? Try it!
I think this unit looks nice, with it's brushed steel face and light up blue VU meter. It's very solidly built and just feels great to the touch. The knobs are all rubberized so they feel good. The compressor works great for vocals...I squash them pretty good and can't hear the compressor. Much better than any built-in preamp with the budget firewire input boxes. My vocals improved greatly with this unit. I must admit that the VU meter is pretty hard to read because it's so dark, even when lit, but I use my metering on my DAW and haven't had any issues yet.
I was very close to buying a Trakmaster pro channel strip. It has everyting you would need in one rack slot. It sounds amazing, but the only reason I didn't get one is that I hate the knobs. I mean this unit is ugly, the knobs are hard to use, there are little red lights on the button that you wonder if they would last a week. Also the V.U. meter is dark purple which makes it hard to read. So if you don't care about the cosmetics of the unit, it does have a great sound.
This is an excellent investment for any studio. Quality sound if you know how to use it.
