Overview

Mobile recording is at an all-time high and you need an audio interface that can maintain optimal performance at any moment when inspiration strikes. The Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 is the right tool for the job. With two award-winning Focusrite preamps packed into a compact, anodized aluminum uni-body chassis, the Scarlett 2i2 not only produces professional quality sound but also looks great doing it. For more than 25 years, Focusrite has designed some of the most popular microphone preamps in the industry. This experience has been used to create the transparent, low-noise and low-distortion preamp found in the Scarlett 2i2. Plenty of available headroom makes it suitable for moving coil, condenser and ribbon microphones regardless of the source. Phantom power is also provided for mics that need it.

The 2-in, 2-out USB interface for musicians
The Scarlett 2i2 is a 2-in / 2-out USB recording interface featuring dual award-winning Focusrite preamps and precision digital conversion. Housed in a rugged anodised aluminium unibody chassis, the interface not only sounds fantastic but looks great too. What’s more, it’s solid enough to take on the road. And inside is 30 years of pro audio design expertise.

30 years of mic pre experience
Since 1985, when Rupert Neve designed those first modules for Sir George Martin’s AIR Studios, Focusrite has designed some of the most popular microphone preamps in the industry. This experience is behind the transparent, low-noise and low-distortion preamp found not only in the Scarlett 2i2 but also our flagship Firewire interface, the Liquid Saffire 56. Plenty of available headroom makes 2i2 suitable for any type of microphone, of any vintage. Phantom power is provided at the touch of a button for mics that need it.

Plug straight in

Use the front panel high quality XLR/jack combination inputs to connect line and instrument level signals as well as microphones – perfect for recording a synth or stage piano, or at the flick of a switch, an electric or acoustic guitar.

Check your levels at a glance

Unique “halo” indicators let you know that you’ve got a good signal level for recording. Red means that your signal is clipping, and that you should reduce the gain. The halo will momentarily turn amber as the level returns to a healthy level, at which point it will turn green.

Precision conversion
At the heart of Scarlett 2i2 is Focusrite’s precision digital conversion, ensuring you get the very best quality into and out of your computer. Focusrite has been building converters since the introduction of its mastering converter in 1993, and our careful choice of components and equally careful board design ensure that you get superior low noise and distortion performance.

Flexible monitoring options
A large monitor dial provides a tactile control for monitor speaker volume, while a high quality headphone amp provides a clean yet loud signal to headphones connected to the front panel socket. The direct monitor switch routes audio directly from the inputs to both the headphone and speaker outputs, letting you monitor the incoming signal with zero-latency.

Note: Includes the Focusrite Red 2 and Red 3 Plug-In Suite (AAX/AU/VST) upon registration of interface. Accurately modeled on the classic Red 2 EQ and Red 3 Compressor, the Red plug-ins let you exploit the sound of the hardware originals, conveniently from within Pro Tools (10 and above) and other audio software.

Pros: Very nice design, solid except for the switches; very good latency with FL Studio and Logic Pro, very good sound quality with no unwanted noise, no blue screen of death on windows 7 when I disconnect and reconnect without powering off the machine; good preamps, although I can't really distinguish the "Focusrite quality" as compared to other audio interfaces especially when you don't have an expensive condenser mic; it's self powered through usb; pricing not too bad considering the build quality and good drivers; the gain lights look cool, but are not very helpful; supports up to 96kHz which is high enough for me Cons: The switches feel vulnerable to breaking, the monitor knob is too close to the headphone knob, forcing an awkward position to change the volume; the scarlett plugins suite feel superfluous and mostly eye candy, plus you only have like 4 installations until you have to buy a new license for it Although I haven't owned very many audio interfaces other than a Tascam US-144, I have worked with high end systems in a recording studio, and I will say, although you obviously won't get the same quality as a $5000+ system, it more than suits my needs. The mic preamps were not a big deal breaker, although they are pretty good, but almost never use the preamps because when I use this device, most of the time I'm not in a sound controlled environment, so there's no point in recording with so much ambient noise. The BIG difference is the latency: MUCH better with this device than using PC alone or my US-144. I use this with FL Studio and Logic Pro, and no issues on either. FL Studio actually runs better with this device, and I am able to work in 48kHz with almost no crackles WHILE loading in 6+ intensive VSTi's plus effects running at the same time on my Core i5 laptop. The design is very nice, a solid metal casing and a nice feel with the knobs, buttons and switches, although the switches feel a little loose, so those are probably most vulnerable to breaking. I would definitely recommend this device to anyone , although the price is a little higher considering the extra stuff that was thrown in (plugin suite, don't really need the lights but they look cool) and this is great for windows users because of the stable drivers.

This device works well with Cubase but bad with protools poor asio management, the Scarlett 2i2 isnt a good fit. If your having to go through sessions with different sample rates, this box will be a nightmare. Everytime I had to switch sample rates and restart protools it never worked. i had to open cubase and change the sample rate and then open protools for the sample rate to change. Its been a big hassle. And why doesnt this box get the control panel of the other scarlett boxes? Focusrite was very little help in finding a solution as well which is disappointing.

Finally !!!

By Kevin English

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB Audio Interface:

I've tried another brand twice now on my Macbook Pro. I thought the first one was just faulty, but the new one produced the same problem which was a loud buzz when trying to assign amps and pedals to my guitar. I bought the Scarlett 2i2 and at first, I experienced bad latency on Apple Logic. I went to Scarlett's web site and they addressed the exact issue and already had a new set of drivers. It works perfectly! Great product, great support!

Sounds great but...

By Gary

from Phoenix AZ

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB Audio Interface:

I just picked up one of these on a salesman recommendation. Works great with a microphone, but not so well with guitar. After having issues with clipping, I started to read up and found that it really depends on what guitar you are using. Many higher output pickups will clip no matter what you do. I even read manufature comments stating they are aware of the problem, and recommend a DI box to bring a guitar input signal down to acceptable levels. In conclusion, it works well but be prepared to spend extra for a DI box.

Awesome Interface

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB Audio Interface:

I didn't have any previous experience with being a sound tech at any juncture of my musical career, but when the 2i2 was recommended to me I was somewhat apprehensive about the whole thing. After looking at a few tutorials, which are very accessible after the purchase, by the way, I got into a situation where I was able to record my first performance in my new home studio. The Scarlett 2i2 has amazing sound quality production. The added bonus of having the Scarlett Plugin Suite, as well as the Ableton Live 9 DAW, makes this a perfect set up for someone like me, in my newly constructed home studio. The whole setup gives you the ability to tweak any of your recordings to your heart's desire, and it brings out all of the nuances of my new e-kit to perfection. Keyboards, vocals, guitars and any other percussion instruments are a breeze with this interface as well. I would highly recommend the 2i2 to anyone, whether they are a novice, or a seasoned musician or sound tech.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB Audio Interface:

I am using this product to rip vinyl from my turntable to digital. The signal level lights on the front make it easy to monitor the signal from my turntable and adjust right and left independently. Clean clear sound (better than the soundcard in my computer). Just wish it had RCA inputs, but the guys at Guitar Center set me up with the right cables for the job.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB Audio Interface:

After getting over the hurdle of drivers, I find this product unreliable. One day it works and the next day I can't get a signal in at all. Take it with a grain of salt but I have spent countless months researching how to connect my mixer with maschine and this interface. I recorded an instrument last night did not change the setup at all, and today no sound. I understand you have to assign input and output signals. I think it came with Cubase and that is way too difficult for a beginner. Abelton live is a little more user friendly and has nice tutorials. I'm about ready to give up on this music, but going to try Native Instruments Interface first and will try to update my review to let everyone know if it proves easier or the same.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB Audio Interface:

I'm a solo performer who records very organic tracks. I don't need a loot of bells and whistles but I DO need clean sound, a non-complex way of recording, portability, and function. The 2i2 delivers on it's promises and puts it all in a very attractive package - I have to say that the look alone did catch my attention! That, added to the functionality, made this a 'no-brainer' - one of the best purchases that I've made regarding recording equipment. Like any piece of equipment, it's only as good as the skill of the person using it, so, it's recommended to read the information available, view the tutorials, read the reviews - basically, educate yourself and use the unit and you will be very happy with the results. Add in the FREE (with the purchase of almost any of the Scarlett units) plug in Scarlett suite, and - especially for solo artists - you can make some very nice recordings!! I can't recommend this product, and the company that stands behind it, enough. I found the tech help (when I had questions about using it with my ipad) fast in response, courteous, and spot on. It might have it's limitations if you are recording more than two instruments at a time, but this is a solid, worthwhile purchase for someone who needs a simple, high quality, solution for a recording interface. I'd give 10 stars if I could!

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB Audio Interface:

this interface is REALLY good. focusrite has better preamps than the AudioBox which is in the same price range, and this one right here is also very good looking. I am very satisfied with the product. The main use for me is for recording guitars. It works great with a microphone or line in directly. I record a Pink Floyd song using Guitar Rig 5 and it worked awesome. I am using Windows 7 64bits. Very nice interface.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB Audio Interface:

If you only need two inputs, this USB interface is probably a good choice. I have a mic plugged into one input, and an electric guitar in the other, and both sound great with the built in pre-amp. There's phantom power available in case you need to power a condenser mic, and a handy headphone output as well. The little LED's on the pre-amp gain knobs are quite convenient, and quickly let you know of any clipping in your input. I actually like the way the pre-amps distort when my input is too hot, so sometimes I leave them a bit too high for a slight "grit" effect before running my guitar through Logic Pro X. The construction is nice as well, as the main casing is metal. Overall, this is a solid product, and probably worth the list price.

          By Matt Martinez

          from NM

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB Audio Interface:

Good interface overall. In my opinion better than most other options in this price range. Pros: Good looks. Dual channel balanced input with two mic pre's. Multi Color Level indicator L.E.D'S. *Direct monitoring (great feature for any interface). Balanced outputs. Good sounding mic preamps (with rode nt1A and ntk, pretty much any condenser mic). Easy Setup. Cons: Only only two mono outputs (if your buying this for Djing you will need at least one more output if you wish to cue up other track during playback). Mic pre's not great for dynamic mics such as Shure SM7 as they only have 55db of gain (SM7 doesn't sound terrible at all with this interface but it doesn't sound as good as it can with a hot pre amp) Get this interface if you need to upgrade from some of the lower end interface's under a $100 bucks. Your recordings will sound a little better with this than using usb mics or your stock soundcard.

          Focusrite Scarlett 2i2

          from Flint, MI

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB Audio Interface:

I just upgraded to a 2012 iMac with Mountain Lion. My old M-Audio Firewire solo was firewire and the new iMac does not come with firewire. Needless to say, it was a great excuse to update my interface. I selected the Focusrite based on price, customer reviews and the claim that it worked well with Mountain Lion. Just plugged it in and it works like a champ. Easy controls, USB connection provides power so it's just a one chord set-up. No installing drivers. Plug and play. If you're looking for an inexpensive way to do some home-recording this unit will do the trick.

          It does a good job!

          By Thomas Whiteley

          from Sunnyvale, CA

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB Audio Interface:

I purchased the 2i2 a few days ago and have used it with microphones and instruments to test its capabilities. My reason for purchasing this item is to have something simple that works well and is small and simple. I have two large cabinets of recording equipment and an external mixer when I want to record something that is serious. This unit is simple to use and does what I want. I use it with Reaper and use Windows XP, Vista and 7. I simply downloaded the latest driver for the 2i2, and selected it using Reaper. With Dynamic Microphones, I have to use the gain control at maximum. My Crystal Microphones require the gain to be at about 75% of maximum. I find this to be fine for either type of microphone. The nylon string guitar was about 18? from the microphone and I am very happy with the results. As for electric guitars, if your signal is too hot try the line input ? otherwise use the instrument input. These of course are selectable using the front panel switch. I used a PRS Tremonti and a Breedlove C25/SR acoustic electric for the tests. I purchased this item at Guitar Center and they matched the price of $109 I found on line from another source. This unit is fun to use and seamless. It is a good way to get started recording with your computer or if you are like me a great unit to have for simple projects.

works great with newer PC gear

          By Tim Black

          from Blossburg, PA

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB Audio Interface:

A few months ago, I purchased the Focusrite, Scarlett 2i2 recording interface to replace my old Tascam US-122 interface. I couldn't be happier with it...it sounds so clear, no noise at all, no latency issues to speak of. It's rugged built, looks nice, is light weight, compact...doesn't take up much space. It's very, very simple to use, and the knob/control layout is very clean, simple and functional. Headphone amp is very loud, and it has the full 1/4" headphone jack. I do want to mention, that to plug a guitar or bass straight into, is just tooo hot, a simple direct box like the Rolls DB25b has worked amazingly well with it. My only minor gripe is that the install is somewhat tedious, but what isn't nowadays?? However, they provide video instructions for this. I did purchase this at a Guitar Center location. I don't like the plug in suite, can't get it to work.

Each e-mail I sent took over a week to get an answer and then it was no help at all. After six weeks of trying to get help I finally found Online and downloaded the software that was supposed to be included. The difficult registration process of the software both from Focusrite and Ableton eventually allowed successfull installation of the software that mostly works (Ableton locks up occasionally). The Focusrite drivers are not signed off by Microsoft because Focusrite doesn't want to pay for that, so I get warnings that they may harm my computer. Focusrite tells me that it's common to see those warnings and that everyone knows to just ignore them. How lame is that!?! It may be a nice piece of gear but was a nightmare getting it installed and working.

This doesn't work with an updated Mac or PC. I've talked to Focusrite about it for a few months now and they have no explanation or directly address the fact that my unit just doesn't work. Do not buy this product.
