Overview

Four combo inputs with Scarlett mic preamps and two newly designed high headroom instrument inputs let you record any combination of instruments or vocals together. Connect your synths, keyboards or mixers into four additional line inputs on the rear panel, and connect any equipment with digital I/O to the SPDIF inputs to record ten simultaneous channels. Connect an OctoPre via ADAT, expanding to 12 mic preamps and 16 analog inputs. Two discrete headphone outputs let you send separate headphone mixes to two artists, or an engineer and artist, while two balanced jack outputs let you connect to your professional studio monitors. With further MIDI connectivity, you can also integrate your favorite hardware synths with your DAW.

Remote control from iPhone or iPad
Download the free Focusrite iOS Control app and adjust cue mixes created with the Focusrite Control desktop app remotely from an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch.

New Generation - Better in Every Way
The second generation Scarlett range is packed full of upgrades. New super-low latency* will bring confidence to your performance, letting you record and monitor with software effects in real time. New metal gain controls and a sleeker red metal chassis underscore its improved industrial design, built to go anywhere. The Scarlett range also now operates at sample rates all the way up to 192kHz, and the input channels have evolved too. The latest Scarlett mic preamp features a more even gain structure, so you can accurately set your levels, and the instrument input has also been completely redesigned with greater headroom to handle seriously hot guitar pick-ups. Finally, Focusrite have provided analog protection circuitry across both the inputs and the outputs, to guard your interface against unwanted power surges.

Intuitive Mix Control, Red Plug-ins and More
The included 'Focusrite Control' is a brand new software mixer for easy configuration of monitoring and routing setups. Simple and intuitive to use, Focusrite Control offers a traditional mixer workflow and allows immediate access to internal hardware functions. Also included are the software and effects you need; an exclusive version of Pro Tools | First - Focusrite Creative Pack (featuring 12 additional plug-ins including the Eleven Lite for real life guitar amp emulations), Ableton Live Lite, the Softube Time and Tone Bundle, Focusrite's Red Plug-In Suite, 2GB of Loopmasters samples and more.

* Super-low roundtrip latency was measured at 2.74ms, working at 96kHz with a 32 samples buffer on Logic Pro X, running on a Mac Pro and OS 10.11

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 (2nd Gen) USB Audio Interface:

I produced an album on my IMack using the Scarlett I181 interface. I am not at all technical by nature but the I181 was very easy to learn. And the album "Trucks to Trains" by Paul Click came out great.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 (2nd Gen) USB Audio Interface:

Stupidly purchased this 18i8 2nd gen to replace an 18i6 that completely died. I liked the features offered by the 18i8 so I went for it. Right out of the box, my audio system had trouble recognizing the interface. I was able to find a "beta driver" on a hidden Focusrite website that allowed Windows to see the interface, but the Focusrite Control software (necessary for setting up monitoring, etc.) will still not see the interface. I have messaged Focusrite support via email and Facebook with no response, going on a week now. I plan on returning this unit in favor of something with a better track record of driver compatibility and support, probably MOTU.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 (2nd Gen) USB Audio Interface:

I bought this to upgrade from a MAudio MTrack that I had been using for years. The MTrack was useful but I needed more inputs and frankly, it was a brat to connect to Ardour under Linux. I scoured the internet seeking a modern replacement that featured seamless integration with Linux drivers and had the latest no-latency, no-noise hardware voodoo. Included DAW software was a secondary consideration and yes, I run Windows 10 too but using Ardour under Ubuntu Studio has always been my never-obsolete DAW solution.

At the time of purchase, the Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 met the primary requirements that I mentioned above. GuitarCenter made my decision easier by including a 15 percent GuitarCenter bucks promotion with the product. I have yet to receive the bucks as the promotion included a delay clause, but I am sure it will be honored as all my previous dealings with GuitarCenter have been exemplary. So, I bought the Focusrite on-line and had it mailed to me as my local store did not stock it. That required creating a GuitarCenter on-line account that I have used several times since. My order shipped quickly through UPS and arrived without incident.

I have connected the 18i8 to both of my computers... one running Windows 10 and the other Ubuntu Studio. The computers are identical with quad-core Intel® Core™2 Duo CPUs and 8 GB of RAM. I multiplex the 18i8 into the machines with an auto-sensing USB switch and I have installed the included Ableton 9 Lite DAW onto the Windows machine. I am impressed with the performance of the 18i8 on both installations. No noise and negligible latency... especially when using the 18i8 Direct Monitoring feature.

Am I satisfied? Yes, with qualifications. Since purchasing the 18i8 I have become intrigued with a competing product that didn't exist at the time that features wireless connectivity and more channels. I have also experienced one shutdown incident that was quickly solved by Focusrite support and was not entirely the 18i8's fault.
