Overview

The Focusrite 18i20 brings the recording performance of 8 award-winning Focusrite mic preamps and combines them with a high-quality 24-bit/96kHz USB 2.0 interface that's compatible with Mac, Windows, and iOS platforms, which means legendary recording performance on the iPad (Apple Camera Connection Kit required). Focusrite's mic preamps are found in the world's top studios and give the 18i20 an unequalled level of performance, with low noise, minimal distortion and enormous dynamic range. The Scarlett preamps offer exceptional headroom, and two front-panel inputs also offer 10dB pad buttons to handle the highest-level inputs without distortion.

Comprehensive inputs/outputs
With 18 inputs and 20 outputs, Scarlett 18i20 includes enough I/O to handle the vast majority of day-to-day studio tasks at maximum quality, with maximum flexibility. Scarlett 18i20 features six combo XLR/jack mic/line inputs plus two front-panel XLR/jack mic/line/instrument inputs with 10dB pad buttons, 10 analogue line outputs, two independent headphone outputs on the front panel, and ADAT and S/PDIF digital I/O, plus MIDI I/O and Word Clock out for digital synchronization when required.

The ADAT interface can be used to bring in digital sources or to add extra preamps such as Focusrite's OctoPre Mk II, bringing the mic pre complement to 16 channels, ideal for recording a complete band and minimizing overdubs.

High channel count and Focusrite quality - now on USB 2.0 and iOS
Scarlett 18i20 is the USB complement of the tried and tested Saffire PRO 40 Firewire interface. Suitable for Windows, Mac and even iOS (with the Camera Connection Kit*) platforms, Scarlett 18i20's USB 2.0 connection suits almost any computer, helping you build a setup in which external storage and audio interfaces do not have to share the same computer bus (recommended for the best performance) - if you have Firewire drives, for example, a USB audio interface is the best choice.

Comprehensive bundle of included software
Comes with Ableton Live Lite - ground-breaking production and performance software, Scarlett Plug-in Suite - EQ, compression, gating and reverb, Novation Bass Station - software model of the classic Novation analogue mono-synth, and 1GB of Loopmasters samples.

Note: Includes the Focusrite Red 2 and Red 3 Plug-In Suite (AAX/AU/VST) upon registration of interface. Accurately modeled on the classic Red 2 EQ and Red 3 Compressor, the Red plug-ins let you exploit the sound of the hardware originals, conveniently from within Pro Tools (10 and above) and other audio software.

Hardware: Dell (i7 Intel cpu)
OS: Windows 10

It works. Pro Tools 12 detected interface with no problems. FocusRite/Novation customer service is quick and friendly. Haven't had a chance to play around with the software add-ons that come with the interface. Only problem I have right now is the Mix software interface can't detect the hardware. It did for a while when my system was still on Windows 7 professional but that cut out at some point too before upgrading to Windows 10. I'm attaching a link to a video that contains a sound sampling of drums mic'ed to the scarlett and recorded in ProTools. It's raw audio bounced to MP3 audio and then rendered in a video editor as-is to go with video, for the purpose of establishing a base line for the audio.

This product is not fully compatible with Windows 8. The Focusrite website shows it listed under Windows 8 OS compatible but this product is not shown in their list "Products - Compatiblity with Windows 8". Windows 8 is a generational OS change, it is different in both software and hardware. If your computer came pre-loaded with Windows 8 it's probably a "Windows 8 machine" and there's a good chance the 18i20 won't work reliably. Mine disconnects from the USB after less than a minute. Every time Focusrite seems to solve the issue it reoccurs after a few weeks. If your computer is Windows 7 or previous and you upgrade to 8 you might be able to use the 18i20. Windows 8 machine ~ stay away!

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 Audio Interface:

You are essentially buying a very a high quality product for the price that other competitors can't compete. When you hear of Focusrite, its like Neve and Solid State Logic. Focusrite is know for their legacy mixing consoles and top of the line mic preamps used in million dollar recording studios. The legacy left behind by Rupert Neve, is carried over to its modern day audio interfaces, pre amps and Channel strips. Its hard not to walk into a major recording studio today, and not see a Focusrite rack in the bunch.

Now enough of the rambling. I was in the process of looking for an upgrade from my Roland audio interface with low latency. I was looking at other brands like Motu, Native Instruments, Presonus and then came across this interface. After all the research I've done, I narrowed it down to Focusrite and Motu. I've heard a lot of good stuff about Motu as well but for the price, it was essentially a steal what you are getting with Focusrite for the same quality minus the built in DSP effects that's found on Motu's flagship. It was right with in my budget. I know many people that own Motu interfaces and can say that both Focusrite and Motu are parallel prior to sound quality and their AD/DA converters. But the Pre-Amps on the Focusrite is what caught my attention. For this particular unit, the 18i20 model was to do multi-track recording simultaneously for all of my out board hardware like keyboards, MPC 5000 etc. When recording with two ins, it would some times take to long to track out songs, so getting a rack with multiple ins makes sense. Its great for recording bands too. After got this unit and unboxed and hooked it up, I immediately heard a big difference in sound quality verses my old Roland UA-25EX interface. I've seen to have some sort of lag with my Roland and had problems with clicks and pop. But with this unit, I don't have to worry about any of that happening. Its very rock solid stable as I expected to be and works with all major DAWs. The build quality is top notch rather than cheap plastic on other audio interfaces with in the same price range. I Most def love the sexy red metallic finish which stands out. So far my only flaw I've found is this unit does seem to get pretty hot during normal use, which I suppose that's normal if it has all those Pre-amps packed in there but they could at least, created some type of heat ventilation. Over all I still give it a 5 stars.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 Audio Interface:

I just want to say how impressed I am with the quality of sound that comes out of this interface. Everything is crisp and clean. No complaints in that department. I don't have any complaints on how the knobs feel like some have said. Downside, you have to look at the tutorials on MixContol cue mix to properly understand all of the features and how to use this software. A little bit difficult at first. I am running it on a Mac 10.7 with Lion. my last Interface was a Presonus AudioBox, not the same quality of sound, sorry Presonus.

    Excellent Machine!

    By Greg Pierce

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 Audio Interface:

No USB Hiss, No Squeal, like some Firewire interface's, No latency issues. The pre-amps are dead quite and sound excellent. It's expandable, I'm very Impressed and satisfied with my purchase. I'm running Windows 7x64. The mix software and plugin suite are east to install and the focusrite plugins sound great. The routing possibilities are practically endless. I recorded simultaneous test tracks and added plugins to the mix at 3 milliseconds latency record/playback so far on the included ASIO drivers without a hitch and I haven't experimented yet to see if I can go lower. I'd have to say it's clean, pristine, multi-track recording over USB at it's finest. Thanks to Focusrite.

good sounding unit with good customer service

    By Kyle Gregory

    from Binghamton, NY

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 Audio Interface:

so after trying everything possible to get my Presonus Firestudio to work i gave up and went to guitar center and bought this unit. i decided that i no longer wanted to use firewire or presonus products, so after a little research i decided to give this a shot and i'm glad i did. i actually ran into an issue at first so i e-mailed Focusrite about it and within a day i got a response from them that was very helpful. they recommended changing some of the settings on my computer and then it worked. for a little while anyways. the error message came up again and after that i ended up borrowing an external harddrive (which focusrite suggested i use) and i haven't had any issues since. very helpful of them, Presonus never answered my emails when i needed help. as for the sound, it's great!! worth the extra money to go with focusrite over presonus, better parts and more features, tons of monitoring options that are very helpful. i used external preamps on most of my tracks along with a BBE Maxcom compressor and got some very clean sounds, but the focusrite preamps sounded decent enough. i haven't used the Ableton software yet but i'm going to give it a shot pretty soon. i'm pretty happy with this purchase and if you're thinking about buying it then just do it, you won't regret it.

    Update to my first review

    By Greg Pierce

    from Saint Louis MO

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 Audio Interface:

I've got the latency down to 1.8 milliseconds on a fast Windows 7-64bit machine. I've got my (Carvin 1648) 16 channel analog mixer plugged in to inputs 3L-4R respectively and a Focusrite ISA 1 Plugged into inputs 5 & 6 and Bass and Guitar amps into inputs 6 & 7. It works flawlessly. I'm going to get a Focusrite Octapre-mkII to connect to the Scarlett ADAT input for another 8 input channels. It's hard to believe that I get better results with this USB interface than I did with my previous Firewire interface. If you are a novice in regard to routing Inputs to outputs I can tell you that there is a small learning curve in regard to using the mix control software but once you wrap your mind around it, it is easy. This is a solid piece of recording gear that also looks great in my rack. If you want hassle free recording ability with expandability and great sound the go ahead and get this interface.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 Audio Interface:

I have been upgrading my personal studio this year and have had this unit for about 8 months now. I had already used a Firepod Studio unit by Focusrite for an extended period of time, so I knew that the pre amps were going to sound great. Very transparent and clear. I familiarized myself with the included software and had a good idea of what it offered. I use this interface as a tool to patch in my rack synths using the mix software. This frees up space in my Mackie mixer for other things. The software is very easy to use once you figure out your way around, and you can save different configurations for easy recall. This comes in handy when you use outboard effects during tracking and switch between different gear consistently. What really impressed me is when I recently purchased a new computer (i7/16GB) that can really deliver the speed to the Scarlett. The clarity increased and almost ZERO latency. USB 3.0 makes a huge difference. This is a more than adequate interface at a very good price for what it delivers. It may not suit a high end professional studio, but for most of us, it is a step up from a 2-track interface, especially if you have a large enough array of gear to warrant the need for more connectivity. I definitely recommend this to someone with a large project studio.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 Audio Interface:

I was in the market for an upgrade to an old audio interface I was using before. So I read many reviews about this one. I am totally happy with this product. Just remember a few things, this is a usb 2.0 audio interface, as such it needs to be plugged in to one to make it work. It will not work with USB 3.0 as I found out by accident. Once you are past that the software that comes with it is pretty cool. Scarlett Mix-control allows for different mixes to be sent to different people if multiple people are recording at the same time. The other really cool thing is the very low latency which is nice. So overall it is a very good unit for me.

Windows 8 Works Great With My Scarlett 18i20

      By Shayne

      from Gilbert, AZ

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 Audio Interface:

I hadn't read or heard of any compatibility problems between Windows 8 and this interface before I bought it. Setup was easy and I've had no problems. The amount of inputs and outputs on this unit gives you an incredible amount of options. The plug-ins that are included and Scarlett's software MixControl contribute to the product's value as well. If firewire isn't an option, this might be one of the best interfaces you could use.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 Audio Interface:

The Scarlett 18i20 is used for multichannel output from Hauptwerk, a virtual pipe organ simulation program. Love the ADAT compatibility as I already owned an 8 channel ADAT unit as well as a mixer and recorder with ADAT. That gives me lots of connectivity via optical cables.

The only issue I have is that I would prefer the unit have solid drivers for USB 3.0 under Windows 10. Operation is great with a USB 2.0 port which is fine for now but I am in contact with support in hopes that they will update the drivers.
