The Focusrite 18i20 brings the recording performance of 8 award-winning Focusrite mic preamps and combines them with a high-quality 24-bit/96kHz USB 2.0 interface that's compatible with Mac, Windows, and iOS platforms, which means legendary recording performance on the iPad (Apple Camera Connection Kit required). Focusrite's mic preamps are found in the world's top studios and give the 18i20 an unequalled level of performance, with low noise, minimal distortion and enormous dynamic range. The Scarlett preamps offer exceptional headroom, and two front-panel inputs also offer 10dB pad buttons to handle the highest-level inputs without distortion.
With 18 inputs and 20 outputs, Scarlett 18i20 includes enough I/O to handle the vast majority of day-to-day studio tasks at maximum quality, with maximum flexibility. Scarlett 18i20 features six combo XLR/jack mic/line inputs plus two front-panel XLR/jack mic/line/instrument inputs with 10dB pad buttons, 10 analogue line outputs, two independent headphone outputs on the front panel, and ADAT and S/PDIF digital I/O, plus MIDI I/O and Word Clock out for digital synchronization when required.
The ADAT interface can be used to bring in digital sources or to add extra preamps such as Focusrite's OctoPre Mk II, bringing the mic pre complement to 16 channels, ideal for recording a complete band and minimizing overdubs.
High channel count and Focusrite quality - now on USB 2.0 and iOS
Scarlett 18i20 is the USB complement of the tried and tested Saffire PRO 40 Firewire interface. Suitable for Windows, Mac and even iOS (with the Camera Connection Kit*) platforms, Scarlett 18i20's USB 2.0 connection suits almost any computer, helping you build a setup in which external storage and audio interfaces do not have to share the same computer bus (recommended for the best performance) - if you have Firewire drives, for example, a USB audio interface is the best choice.
Comprehensive bundle of included software
Comes with Ableton Live Lite - ground-breaking production and performance software, Scarlett Plug-in Suite - EQ, compression, gating and reverb, Novation Bass Station - software model of the classic Novation analogue mono-synth, and 1GB of Loopmasters samples.
Note: Includes the Focusrite Red 2 and Red 3 Plug-In Suite (AAX/AU/VST) upon registration of interface. Accurately modeled on the classic Red 2 EQ and Red 3 Compressor, the Red plug-ins let you exploit the sound of the hardware originals, conveniently from within Pro Tools (10 and above) and other audio software.

I hadn't read or heard of any compatibility problems between Windows 8 and this interface before I bought it. Setup was easy and I've had no problems. The amount of inputs and outputs on this unit gives you an incredible amount of options. The plug-ins that are included and Scarlett's software MixControl contribute to the product's value as well. If firewire isn't an option, this might be one of the best interfaces you could use.
I was in the market for an upgrade to an old audio interface I was using before. So I read many reviews about this one. I am totally happy with this product. Just remember a few things, this is a usb 2.0 audio interface, as such it needs to be plugged in to one to make it work. It will not work with USB 3.0 as I found out by accident. Once you are past that the software that comes with it is pretty cool. Scarlett Mix-control allows for different mixes to be sent to different people if multiple people are recording at the same time. The other really cool thing is the very low latency which is nice. So overall it is a very good unit for me.
This product is not fully compatible with Windows 8. The Focusrite website shows it listed under Windows 8 OS compatible but this product is not shown in their list "Products - Compatiblity with Windows 8". Windows 8 is a generational OS change, it is different in both software and hardware. If your computer came pre-loaded with Windows 8 it's probably a "Windows 8 machine" and there's a good chance the 18i20 won't work reliably. Mine disconnects from the USB after less than a minute. Every time Focusrite seems to solve the issue it reoccurs after a few weeks. If your computer is Windows 7 or previous and you upgrade to 8 you might be able to use the 18i20. Windows 8 machine ~ stay away!
so after trying everything possible to get my Presonus Firestudio to work i gave up and went to guitar center and bought this unit. i decided that i no longer wanted to use firewire or presonus products, so after a little research i decided to give this a shot and i'm glad i did. i actually ran into an issue at first so i e-mailed Focusrite about it and within a day i got a response from them that was very helpful. they recommended changing some of the settings on my computer and then it worked. for a little while anyways. the error message came up again and after that i ended up borrowing an external harddrive (which focusrite suggested i use) and i haven't had any issues since. very helpful of them, Presonus never answered my emails when i needed help. as for the sound, it's great!! worth the extra money to go with focusrite over presonus, better parts and more features, tons of monitoring options that are very helpful. i used external preamps on most of my tracks along with a BBE Maxcom compressor and got some very clean sounds, but the focusrite preamps sounded decent enough. i haven't used the Ableton software yet but i'm going to give it a shot pretty soon. i'm pretty happy with this purchase and if you're thinking about buying it then just do it, you won't regret it.
I've got the latency down to 1.8 milliseconds on a fast Windows 7-64bit machine. I've got my (Carvin 1648) 16 channel analog mixer plugged in to inputs 3L-4R respectively and a Focusrite ISA 1 Plugged into inputs 5 & 6 and Bass and Guitar amps into inputs 6 & 7. It works flawlessly. I'm going to get a Focusrite Octapre-mkII to connect to the Scarlett ADAT input for another 8 input channels. It's hard to believe that I get better results with this USB interface than I did with my previous Firewire interface. If you are a novice in regard to routing Inputs to outputs I can tell you that there is a small learning curve in regard to using the mix control software but once you wrap your mind around it, it is easy. This is a solid piece of recording gear that also looks great in my rack. If you want hassle free recording ability with expandability and great sound the go ahead and get this interface.
No USB Hiss, No Squeal, like some Firewire interface's, No latency issues. The pre-amps are dead quite and sound excellent. It's expandable, I'm very Impressed and satisfied with my purchase. I'm running Windows 7x64. The mix software and plugin suite are east to install and the focusrite plugins sound great. The routing possibilities are practically endless. I recorded simultaneous test tracks and added plugins to the mix at 3 milliseconds latency record/playback so far on the included ASIO drivers without a hitch and I haven't experimented yet to see if I can go lower. I'd have to say it's clean, pristine, multi-track recording over USB at it's finest. Thanks to Focusrite.
