Overview

Eight natural-sounding combination input Scarlett mic preamps deliver exceptional headroom, loads of linear clean gain, low noise and minimal distortion. The two inputs on the front panel feature newly designed instrument inputs with extended headroom. The ADAT expansion ports allow you to add an extra eight analog inputs and outputs, particularly useful for anyone who wants to record higher channel counts and integrate lots of outboard gear.

When it comes to outputs, Scarlett 18i20 delivers full routing and monitoring flexibility. There are two dedicated TRS jack outputs for studio monitors featuring anti-thump circuitry, plus eight more analog jack outputs, two stereo pairs providing mirrored independent headphone outputs on the front panel. With MIDI connectivity, you can also integrate your favorite hardware synths with your DAW. Wordclock Out is also on hand for sync'ing to external devices.

New Generation - Better in Every Way
The second generation Scarlett range is packed full of upgrades. The lowest roundtrip latency in its class (2.74ms*) brings confidence to your performance, letting you record and monitor with software effects in real time. New metal gain controls and a sleeker red metal chassis reassure you of its improved industrial design, built to go anywhere. The Scarlett range also now operates at sample rates all the way up to 192kHz, and the input channels have evolved too. The latest Scarlett mic preamp features a more even gain structure, so you can accurately set your levels, and the instrument input has also been completely redesigned with increased headroom to handle seriously hot guitar pick-ups. Finally, Focusrite have provided analog protection circuitry across both the inputs and the outputs, guarding your interface against unwanted power surges.

Intuitive Mix Control, Red Plug-ins and More
The included 'Focusrite Control' is a brand new software mixer for easy configuration of monitoring and routing setups. Simple and intuitive to use, Focusrite Control offers a traditional mixer workflow and allows immediate access to internal hardware functions. Also included are the software and effects you need; an exclusive version of Pro Tools | First - Focusrite Creative Pack (featuring 12 additional plug-ins including the Eleven Lite for real life guitar amp emulations), Ableton Live Lite, the Softube Time and Tone Bundle, Focusrite's Red Plug-In Suite, 2GB of Loopmasters samples and more.

*Roundtrip latency was measured at 2.74ms, working at 96kHz with a 32 samples buffer on Logic Pro X, running on a Mac Pro and OS 10.11

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 (2nd Gen) USB Audio Interface:

Love the hardware device. Easy to use features. It is a little on the heavy side. All inputs and outputs do seem durable. Love that it has a power switch and it is located on the front of audio interface device. But hate the DAW software ProTools First because of the limitations like 4 inputs max., the setup of multiple accounts, internet connect just to use and the having to login to an account everytime you want to use.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 (2nd Gen) USB Audio Interface:

I did a lot of study before I brought this home. I was really excited by what I read on the Focusrite site and the various pro reviews (like SOS). I was a little concerned by some comments on chat boards about the Scarlett units not always playing well with Windows. I run an ADK tower on Windows 7 HP with a Core i-5 and 8 gigs of RAM. I run REAPER as my DAW because it's easy and super stable.

Setup was easy though time consuming once I figured out I was plugged into a USB 1.0 port and fixed that.

PROS: (1)Really like the I/O management. A big reason for the purchase was so I could manage two sets of monitors. (2) Lots of I/O. I run several stand-alone preamps and was tired of getting behind the rack to plug things things in and out. Also really wanted to be able to mute the monitors. (3) Preamps have more headroom than the VS-100 and sound a little better. However, since I have some pretty good outboard preamps, this wasn't a huge consideration.

CONS: One big one: At the factory default (128 samples) I got loads of clicks and pops and hiccups on all applications. At 512 samples most of that went away but seemed to use lots of processing power. The deal breaker was that it kept hiccuping during playback no matter what I did (even setting samples way up to 1024, trying REAPER settings for buggy programs, etc.) and it happened a couple of times on every playback. By contrast, the VS-100 is dead stable (no clicks, pops or hiccups) at 128 samples. For me, it just wasn't acceptable that the 18i20 wouldn't play through a track without problems when I've already got a box that will.

So I'm going to stay with what works for now. Maybe I'll look at a Roland Studio Capture in the future.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 (2nd Gen) USB Audio Interface:

I've used Digidesign/Avid products for 16 years and finally added Logic Pro X as a DAW so I bought this Scarlett 18i20. I had to email Focusrite to figure out how to tell my Mac that I wasn't using my 003 drivers and they solved my problem very efficiently...way better than Avid has ever done. Looking forward to using this unit!

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 (2nd Gen) USB Audio Interface:

After receiving this product, I immediately realized that I know nothing about recording. I am a worthless human being who has no business even making this purchase. It took me three days to figure out how to hear what I was playing through my headphones. Fortunately, I emailed Focusrite support on day two and they contacted me immediately with very basic step-by-step instructions, which worked. Since then, I have mic'd up my drum set and managed to actually record myself. I broke down and wept with joy for several minutes before falling asleep inside my kick drum. All in all, Ableton is pretty intuitive, and the Focusrite people are fantastic. I literally have no experience and have been moving along faster than expected. And this is all right out of the box.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 (2nd Gen) USB Audio Interface:

All in all, this is a very solid interface and a good upgrade from the previous version. The preamps sound great and the controls are simple and straightforward. I am very, VERY satisfied with this interface.
I'm not crazy about the redone software for controlling mixes. It certainly looks nicer, but is a little more confusing to use.
Setup was a little terrible and took a few days to figure out what was going wrong. If you are a Windows 7 (64) user like me, you may run into the same issue; there is a very specific security update that you will need to install if you don't have automatic updates turned on. If you do not have this update installed, the drivers won't install right and the device won't work. Info on this can be found by googling and going through the Focusrite page, which will direct you to the particular security update.
Also be aware that any time you change the sample rate in the mix control, you have to set the default device in your sound panel. This may be common knowledge to most, but it had me pulling my hair out trying to figure out why I was getting sound on only one of the sample rates.
All in all, even after the headache of getting it to work right, I love it.
