The Focusrite Saffire Pro 40, a multichannel FireWire audio interface designed with today's project studio in mind, and delivers the sound quality of much more expensive interfaces.

Focusrite's unparalleled preamp legacy forms the foundation of the Saffire Pro 40 interface, with eight award-winning Focusrite preamps. These are combined with the latest in FireWire interfacing technology to deliver seamless integration, excellent routing flexibility and future-proof, rock-solid driver stability.

With the Saffire PRO 40 interface, sonic integrity reigns supreme. The eight Focusite preamps ensure low noise and distortion, while quality digital conversion and JetPLL jitter elimination technology ensure pristine audio quality as your audio flows between the analogue and digital domains.

Alongside the eight Focusrite preamps are a host of I/O options; 10 analog outputs, ADAT I/O, stereo SPDIF I/O, and 2 virtual "loopback" inputs for routing digital audio between software applications. Every channel features phantom power, with the first two channels also featuring -9dB pads for additional headroom. Front panel 5-LED metering for each analog input offers accurate viewing of levels.

Saffire PRO 40 comes with the Focusrite plug-in suite. Focusrite Compression, Reverb, Gating and EQ VST/AU plug-ins provide a significant upgrade from standard sequencer effects, bringing a touch of class to your session. Focusrite's established Xcite+ bundle is also included. The bundle includes Ableton Live Lite, Novation's Bass Station soft synth and over 1 gigabyte of royalty-free samples.

Saffire PRO 40 Control, the zero-latency 18 x 16 DSP Mixer/Router software provided with Saffire PRO 40, sets a new standard at this price point for audio interface control. It features unparalleled output routing and monitoring, as well as intuitive one-click solutions, a clear and concise mixing layout and large on-screen metering for inputs, outputs and submixes.

Two independent headphone buses are provided, each with their own level controls available on the front panel. A dedicated stereo monitor mix output features pads for improved sound quality when connected to active monitor speakers. An 'anti-thump' circuit protects your monitor speakers from spikes when booting up or shutting down. Front panel controls include a main monitor dial with dim and mute switches, all of which fully integrate with customizable software to cover every possible monitoring need, providing a set of controls for any setup from basic stereo to full 7.1 surround.

Focusrite's popular Saffire Firewire interfaces are fully compatible with Thunderbolt ports on Mac computers. All you need to connect the two is a FireWire 400-800 cable (included with all new Saffire interfaces later this year) and the Thunderbolt to FireWire 800 adapter (not included). Simply plug this into the Thunderbolt port on your computer and connect the FireWire interface - it's as simple as that. Saffire interfaces are 100% compatible with Thunderbolt using this adaptor.

All Saffire FireWire and Thunderbolt-compatible interfaces now come bundled with Focusrite's Midnight plug-in suite for free upon registration. The Midnight plug-in suite models two of the most iconic Focusrite modules of all time - the ISA110 equaliser and ISA130 compressor - and gives them elegant, functional on-screen front panels for easy control.

Note: Includes the Focusrite Red 2 and Red 3 Plug-In Suite (AAX/AU/VST) upon registration of interface. Accurately modeled on the classic Red 2 EQ and Red 3 Compressor, the Red plug-ins let you exploit the sound of the hardware originals, conveniently from within Pro Tools (10 and above) and other audio software.

I would have loved to give the Pro 40 a good rating, but I'm afraid the folks at Focusrite took that possibility away. When I first bought the Pro 40, it worked great on my Mac (Mountain Lion) and met my every need. Without updating my OS or changing any other preferences, the hardware was no longer detected by my computer. I tried every troubleshooting idea I could think of, and even posted on message boards (including Focusrite's own support page), but to no avail. Eventually, I discovered that the driver had gotten corrupted and required a separate application, provided by Focusrite, to fix the issue. It's called dicetool.zip, and you can only obtain through their support department via email. I emailed them for a week straight, once a day, and got no response! I had deadlines to meet for a commercial I was writing for, so I ultimately had to give up the Pro 40 and buy an Apogee Quartet, which is something I was hoping to avoid. (They're overpriced but at least they work!) Focusrite did eventually respond 10 days later with the dicetool.zip and instructions on how to fix the driver. After trying for several hours to follow their obscure instructions, the driver still failed to work. I wouldn't recommend this device to anyone who depends on their equipment for any sort of professional need. It's got a lot of great aspects to it, though - preamps are great, tons of i/o's, easy to use - but none of that matters if the drivers aren't working and the support team at Focusrite is anything but helpful. I returned the Pro 40 and will most likely not use their products anymore.

Comments about Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 FireWire Interface:

This product was easy to connect to my existing guitar rack equipment (Fractal AXE FX II XL+) and start recording.

Recording while routing through the Saffire Pro 40 has a noticeable difference in tone for the better.

The Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 allows a user to dial in perfect recording levels with minimal effort. I record a lot of cover tunes so dialing in the perfect level is key for me.

The Firewire interface works great with zero latency so a user can record while listening to the signal live. This was a huge plus as most USB interfaces since they share the same bus on the PC causes latency.

I recommend this to anyone that wants a good recording audio interface for their studio.

Comments about Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 FireWire Interface:

I purchased this interface about a year ago as an upgrade from a Presonus Firestudio Project interface and I'm very glad I did not saying the Presonus wasn't any good but this one is awesome! Great low latency and the Pre-amps sound amazing as well. Although I have a stand alone PreAmp the Daking Mic Pre One the built in Pres are great too! The build quality is solid all the buttons and knobs feel great (not cheap)! If your just starting out and looking for a great interface you can't go wrong with this one!

Comments about Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 FireWire Interface:

I've been using this for years but as I notice other companies updating their relevance and improving their features to their gear and software, Focusrite kinda lags behind. For instance there is no features or options to use your tablet or mobile device to control the software mixer, while others are making these type of moves! Other than that I love the quality of this piece.

        HEADROOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        By ADAM

Comments about Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 FireWire Interface:

I own 2 Pro 40's and I love them to death. I am using a PC/Vista ultimate 64, with Sonar X3. The mic pre's are crisp and clear and It has a ton of headroom. I had a Motu 828 Hybrid before and decided to make the change to Focusrite. I was a bit sceptical because i was going to a less pricey unit but it was worth the switch. I thought my MOTU was really good till i used this. I'll never go back now. I'm a Focusrite man for life. they have sold me on their products.

Best Available In Its Price Range - Extremely Flexible - Great Sound

        By Adam Lansky

        from Little Rock, AR

Comments about Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 FireWire Interface:

Anyone looking for an 8-input interface for under $1000 needs to test drive this device. The Saffire Pro 40 has changed the way I produce music. Within the price range, there is nothing comparable & anyone looking to purchase a similar unit should be patient & save up for this one. The preamps are very quiet & have a nice musical tone. The included Saffire MixControl software allows total flexibility of routing without adjusting a single cable -- it may seem complicated at first, but is actually of great benefit to use. The unit has ten 1/4" analog outputs plus SPDIF & ADAT expansion capabilities, two headphone jacks on the front plate, & an independent knob for main speakers (complete with "dim" & "mute" buttons). The preamp knobs are highly consistent from one channel to the next & the quality of design/craftsmanship is evident in the construction of the Pro 40. My system currently consists of a Focusrite OctoPre connected to Pro 40 via ADAT cable for a total of 16 analog channels, plus two SPDIF, plus two loop-back for a total of 20 max channels! The quality & value of this unit far exceeds that of its competitors in its price bracket & is an easy way to achieve great sound from square one.

        awesome and solid

        By Curtis Boggs

        from va bch va

Comments about Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 FireWire Interface:

I had another brand Interface and it was VERY UN-reliable. It would loose sync or not sync at all, .. had to restart several times just to get it to work. I switched to the Focusrite and OMG what a difference! Not only is the driver rock solid on my Mac but the sound is so much cleaner. Very clear with great presence! Very, very nice gear !! So much so I ordered the OctoPre MII Dynamic as well to record drums. I would HIGHLY recommend this over the other interfaces available.

        Beast Interface In It's Class

        By Joshua S.

        from Greensboro, N.C.

Comments about Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 FireWire Interface:

I'm running the Saffire Pro 40 and the OctoPre MKII via Optics. It's wonderful! It has next to no latency plenty of head room with great mic pres. I have used it to multi track drums, record guitars, basses, keys vocals and everything in between. The sound is crystal clear. I run it with Pro Tools 9 and the I/O on pro tools can automatically set up the I/O and DAW for you as long as you set everything up properly with the visual interface. I also have used it with a 7.1 surround sound monitor set up and it will blow your mind. The Head phones come in a little low, but focusrite makes a great headphone amp you can plug into it. Don't listen to some of these reviews, you can track drums as long as you properly set the DAW, I run in a ZED 24 mixer and level everything before even going into the Pro 40 and MKII which gives you way more control. Hands down the best interface for the price, thiers nothing else out there like it.
