Love this interface. Solid pre-amp, dynamics, EQ, and the Holy Grail of vocal tracking - REVERB! I'm no engineer, I'm a vocalist, and I couldn't find a better option for my needs at this price. Actually tracking in stereo with two mics and getting really clean results. One caveat - still having trouble getting a really strong signal. The tracks are no where near as hot as tracks cut with my Motu UltraLite. Probably something I'm not doing right. I've been able to make up the difference with gain without increasing noise. To my ear, the pre-amp sounds better than the UltraLite. I would certainly recommend this audio interface to anyone planning to track a vocalist who wants to be able to hear themselves in the mix while recording. Since the reverb comes from the Focusrite, no latency!
This is the second interface I bought within a year. The first one was from "M" "-)(*&^" somebody with not much support. I had lots of issues with computer related setups regarding latency and USB comunications which was really funny in a way considering I'm an MCSE with a minor in electronics during my day job. I sold that one on E_B_)* something and got the Focusrite unit. The recording from my Saffire Pro 24 DSP are incredible. I chose the one with DSP as I have a great set of Headphones already to use with the VRM while I save some extra for good monitors. I chose focusrite for the incredible preamp and sound of the recordings I had heard. Be aware setting up these units is a pain in the but for the newbie first time. Do not expect to plug and play with anybodies interface if you want the best performance. Go to the Focusrite website which is very well laid out and easy to find information on, read about anything you can do to decrease latency on your computer and you'll be rewarded with great recordings. Their tech support was also on the ball and replied to me proptly (within 24 hours their in UK I think). Is the VRM (Virtual Reference Monitoring) worth the extra 100 dollars? If your going to be using headphones and have sub par monitors AND you really want it to be mobile ...Absolutely. If it is gonna sit in your space stationary with monitors to listen through and you will not be using headphones much.... save the 100 bucks and get the DSP 24 without the VRM. OVERALL once I got over the learning curve 6 out of 5 stars. Way more than I bargained for.
I have to say this is a great unit. At first I was concerned since most of the reviews on this firewire model (Saffire Pro 24 DSP) seemed mostly problematic. However I think I'm a pretty smart guy and thought I could make it work regardless of what issues came up. I really wanted this unit for the mic pre-amps since I also have the Shure KSM 42 mic. So I received the unit and read the instructions of connecting it to the firewire port (everything should be turned off so not to damages it. seems this is just a good general practice for firewire. I mention this since most people are lazy with the USB technology and just plug and unplug as they want.) I'm running Sonar X1, windows professional x64 and also have a Yamaha S80 keyboard plugged in via botht eh midi in/out and the #3 & #4 inputs on the back of the 24 DSP. YOu have to do the normal setup of the unit where it loads the drivers and MixControl software (give this software a chance since when you first open it you will be overwhelmed since it looks complex. It's not. just common sense will get you throuhg it). I also had to go into Sonar to set up my audio and midi inputs/outputs as well. Once all connected I was able to lay down some tracks immediately with an internal softsynth within Sonar (drums) and then another track with the S80 keyboard via midi. All was well until I trid to playl it back through my monitor speakers (hooked up to outputs #1 & #2). Hum??? all I heard was what was on the DAW (this is Sonar X1 but only the softsynths) and I could not hear the S80 yet I could see the vol. bars moving from green to yellow to red etc. so I knew there was sound there. After shooting a quick email to Focusrite support the pointed me to rather than have my DAW1 going to mon 1 and DAW2 going to mon 2 (this is within the MixControl program) that I shoulod point Mix1 to mon 1 and Mix 2 to mon 2. The reason for this is that the various MIX tabs at the top allow you to assign various inputs to that mix along with settings. For Mix 1 I had both DAWs and both #3 & #4 inputs (these were the sound coming from the S80 into the 24DSP unit. think of it that this is how you would hook that keyboard up to an amp to hear it. these 2 outputs from the S80 would bo into an amp or in this case the 24DSP so the midi signals being sent back to it to play would be heard). So now that I've set the Mix 1 & 2 to the monitors 1 & 2 in MixControl software I'm solid now. Well I thought. I was good until I started laying down tracks that were longer than 30 secs. (remember I'm just setting this up and making sure everything worked so I only did short tracks to test varous VSTs, Mics/guitars via the XLR ports 1 & 2 on the front and the S80. But when I tried to record an actual song that was 3 - 4 mins I began to receive dropouts!!!! Not good since this is what most of the reviews said was the problem with the firewire ports. Perplexed I was ready to take it back to GC to exchange it for a USB model. However I sent a note to Focusrite support and included all the infor of the model, OS I had installed, the DAW software and the drivers I had loaded for the 24DSP. Hey, there's that connection between the keyboard and chair acting up again. Yup, I didn't load the newest drivers that are on the Focusrite site. I was running 2.1 and the newest was 4.0 (which is included int he MIxControl v. 3 download. Once I loaded that I also downloaded and ran Latencymon to just make sure my system was good for streaming live audio and it was. I was able to play a song with 24 tracks that was 7+ mins long, lots of VSTs, synths, vocals etc. and never had any dropout or latency!!!!! So, the unit is excellent. What I find might be most peoples issues are not the most current driver (I have the much written about Ricoh firewire port which in most reviews says this doesn't work and people go out and buy a different card , usually TI)since I was able to get this to work with no issues once I have the 4.0 driver. Granted I had the issues everyone wrote about using the 2.1 driver so UPDATE the driver. Also the MIxControl software is intimidating when you open it. But take your time to understand how you have things configured. Hence software such as EZDrummer, Kontact 5, Session Drummer, Dreamweaver etc that are installed on the PC should be played through the DAW setting within MixControl. Hence why I was able to hear my softsynths but not the S80 keyboard. So if you can't hear some external unit that's pluged into the 24DSP via the inputs (this would be minus a microphone or guitar since these would be "audio" tracks and stored withion the DAW for playback)such as a physical synthisizer or effects box it could be that you don't have those things pointed at a specific Mix that you have or don't have pointed to your monitor out puts (mon 1 & mon 2). Ok, I am a happy customre, it was a challenge at times but due to my own lack of understanding and lazyness of just wanting/hopeing to plug and play without having to use my brain. Again, excellent unit. LOTS of flexibility in the MixControl software, EXCELLENT mic pre-amps!!!! If you give it some time and use your brain you should be able to get it set up just the way you want it. Enjoy.
My Presonus FireBox finally started dying )clipping on the negative side of the waveform) after more than 5 years of trusty service, and I looked for something a bit higher-grade to replace it. The Focusrite Saffire series seemed to be the answer with good reviews, nice preamps, lower noise etc. I'd really like a Saffire 56 with the Liquid Channel, but I don't need that many inputs and well, the price is more than double the DSP Pro 24 with VRM. No VRM on the 56 either...hum. I would have paid more for a 24 with one Liquid Channel if they made it....hey Focusrite....here's a product idea for you. I use mic preamps to get the sound I want with my mics, so a transparent, low noise interface was important to me. I had my eye on the stand-alone VRM unit anyways, so getting it included in the interface was a bonus and reduced my studio clutter. I haven't used VRM yet for mastering, but I plan to. I use T-Racks 24, so it should work for that too. I've had the unit for almost a month now and it's been a super experience. Since it's very transparent, like the Presonus. I was even able to patch in some vocal overdubs without any noticable difference....lucky for me since I wasn't finished with a project I started with the Presonus. I haven't used the DSP for the included plugins yet, but I haven't been able to figure out how to use the DSP for the sends in Cubase for dry tracks. The only mention in the manual (not shipped with the unit but is online) is for engaging the DSP for tracking....not something I do in my workflow today. I problably could use it for some reverb in my headphone mix though. The unit is very soldily built, except that the knobs and buttons aren't as nice as I was expecting. They are quiet (at least now) - no switching or scratchy noises as the old Presonus was doing. The mixer utility is much easier to use than the Presonus one which always puzzled me...had to refer to the manual all the time. Focusrite has a nice document on their website about on how to configure your computer for a Firewire interface and I'm trying the suggestions one at a time. I had already purchased a seperate Firewire card for the Presonus, but it was still crashing a lot. I've only had one crash since switching to the Focusrite and I'm hoping I can reduce that to zero. I'm looking forward to many years with this interface...knock on wood! Ciao!
I just receive it two days ago and I'm already in love with it. The Focusrite Preamps are stunningly amazing!, The Adat input let me continued using my old 8 channel Adat Pre, and the two headphone output is simply breathtaking, Not to mention that the VRM technology has bring a new level of mixing comfort to my ears, and the fact that I can track 2 instruments or mic's with compressor, gate, and reverb, to make a better take, or just to give comfort to the vocalist or guitarist, without taking any single drop of cpu power of my iMac really makes the price worth every penny. I would highly recommend this piece of excellent recording gear to any studio or enthusiast home studio that wants to upgrade your system. I bought mine to replace and old DIGI001 that I've been using for to many years, and also a M-Audio Firewire Solo that powered my iMac( I had to used the Digi001 on an old G4, then track just the drums to the iMac and finish everything on Logic 9). I couldn't be more happy!
Well for me I have used several interfaces and each one has been better and better and better in sound quality and design. This one is the cream of the crop! With out getting all technical I really like the fact that it has alot of expansion to grown in it, with all and ins and outs. The Mix Control, and I especially like the VRM function, Perfect for those late nights where you want to work on music, with out disturbing anymore (Just plug in your headphones, and open up the VRM and you are ready to go). You are able to virtually be in any listening setting with out actually having to be there. Of course, you should check your mixes on the monitors the next day. But this is a really good way to check your mixes in all different settings before your final mix and especially if you are on the road or you're doing mobile recordings like I have and will be. It is very solid interface. I came across it on black friday and my sales rep was very helpful here in the San Francisco store, I saved alot of money for the functionality of the interface and the intergrated VRM. This is my first firewire interface. Had to buy the card, but that was a minor issue. Glad that it has alot more flexibility than the others, especially recording wise. I also like the independent monitor and headphone controls too. Once again, It is a really stable interface. If you guys or girls see it on sale, I highly suggest getting one.
