  • Fantastic! But I'll be honest...

As reviewed by Emmett1057 on 11/16/2006

First of all, I LOVE this box. It is exactly what I was looking for...But I'm going to be as critical as possible, as I find the most critical reviews to be the most helpful. Starting from the left: 1. The class A preamp is outstanding. This alone is worth the price. I was moving from a standard Mackie console pre, and the difference is night and day. The sound, when solo, isn't hugely different from any decent pre. It's clean and quiet, fairly neutral. I did notice a little pleasing color in the upper midrange, though VERY mild. When it really shines, though, is when mixed whith other tracks (in my case, voice over music beds). I find that I can have the level of the music 2-3dB higher when using the Voicemaster. It sounds so much more pin-pointed in the mix, and doesn't get swallowed by surrounding sounds. The variable high-pass filter is nice..Much nicer than a switch. I haven't used the line or instrument ins. 2. The expander is what really drew me to this unit. It's perfect in almost every way. It would be nice to be able to control the ratio, but as it is, this is the best expansion I've heard from a channel-strip. 3. The vintage harmonics are cool, but too noisy for me. They could be very useful in the right setting, but they do bring up the noise floor considerably. 3. I found it tough to get the compressor exactly the way I wanted it. I eventually did, but with the lack of variable attack and ratio controls, it took some serious time. It's a very smooth compressor, but it's lacking some controls that could be very helpful. 4. I have no use for tube sound, but I thought the emulation circuit was pretty convincing, when compared to a genuite tube. Not harsh or fake sounding at all. 5. The EQ setup is decent, but not thrilling. The sound it outstanding, but the setup isn't what I would have done. The mid frequency is set at 1.3kHz, which doesn't help me in any way. I would have really preferred either a frequency selector, or to have it around 2.5Hz, like most EQs. The high (breath) is nice for adding a little sheen to the sound, but nothing special. The warmth knob is great for cutting out some mud, though I thought it sounded horrible when boosted. 6. The de-esser does a great job of reducing without dulling...No complaints here. All of the LEDs are placed well, and easy to read. I'm dissapointed that the 1/4" output in rear is unbalanced, but there is a +4 XLR output that works well, so I simply use an XLR-TRS cable for my connection. Overall, this unit is hard to beat, and probably impossible to beat under $1000. If you're int the market for a great sounding, full-featured channel-strip, this may be the one for you!

  • Big Sound!

As reviewed by Nico on 8/1/2007

Great piece of engineering at a great price, I read the reviews, I looked through the manual, it is everything they say it is, my best investment so far . Huge Vocal sound, I recorded through a Mackie Desk before and when I compared the difference I wondered what was doing all the time.

  • Capture the Ultimate Vocal Track

As reviewed by Misconduct2K on 10/4/2006

Wow! This pre from Focusrite is one of the best investments I have made for my project studio. The Class A mic pre on this thing is practically noise-free! Many recording engineers know that tracking a vocal is a pretty tough task, but this unit makes it so much easier to get a quality vocal laid down. The EQ and tube sound enable you to get the sound you're looking for. If you pony up the extra cash for the digital output board, you won't be sorry - 24-bit 96kHz right into your DAW. You get the most bang for your buck with this unit, and you won't want to plug your mic into anything else!
