Comments about Florea Midnight Double Bass Outfit:
I purchased this for my son's middle school orchestra and my own side dabbling on an upright. When checking out uprights, I knew they could be pricey, but the instrument rentals were pricey too. I figured this was as less than a school year's rental so I ordered one sight unseen. I was surprised that there was not a hint of product or set-up information in the box when I picked up the instrument at the store. Luckily one of the sales staff had taken strings in school and gave me some pointers on basic set-up, because there was no way I was going to pay extra for a proper set up at this point. I know that most 'schooled' players would cringe at the thought of playing an instrument not 'professionally' set up, but maybe you have an spare $100 sitting around for that. I feel comfortable in a pseudo luthier role, so after some research I cut bridge slots, installed the bridge, cut down the nut slots and got the action at the end of the finger board to about 7-9 mm and a heavy guitar pick thickness at the nut, which feels great. The tone is good (it sounds like an upright!) and the volume is consistent across the the strings. I have no dead notes along the length of the finger board. I have no prior experience with an upright so, once I see more instruments and their set-up I can copy more. It would be great to have a bridge that was adjustable, but a little woodworking time and a trip to Home Depot will fix that cheap. I know that a new set of strings would probably help too, but that's another $100+ too. So all in all, for the uneducated, I would say this a good product that looks super cool in a black gloss finish. I'm glad it came with a bow and gig bag. Hopefully my son will be inspired by great jazz or rockabilly players and really take off on the low end and want an upgrade in the future, but for now I think this instrument will serve it's entry level purpose.
