  • Dead on Acoustic reproduction

As reviewed by iowaismine on 10/13/2006

If you're looking for a great pickup this is it. The price is right on; don't flinch - it's worth the money. The humbucking model of this pickup eliminates every last bit of mechanical noise while pickingup and accurately reproducing the subtle nuances of your particular instrument. The best part for me is the slim but deep design. It's kind of hard to see but the pickup goes pretty deep into your guitar, nothing to worry about, in fact, it's great! Not having to worry about hitting the pickup with your fingers or your pick is priceless. I used a dean markeley and those things couldn't be more intrusive into my playing. The fishman is out of the way and with semi-permanent installation I know I am free to upgrade or do away with it altogether if that's what I decide to do. Which I won't!

  • amazing sound-beats any onboard electronics

As reviewed by Earl Brackett on 7/3/2010

this pickup sounds amazing, I wanted to play it cheap with Dean Markley, then with a suggestion from the sales dude I checked out the active Fishman, the overall design and the fact that the jack fitted like an endpin sold me...I've played high end acoustics with onboard electronics and they produce nothing like the rich sound that this active pickup produces, absolutely no noise from picking or fingerstyle, it's a beautiful product.

  • Great compromise for plugged in acoustic tone

As reviewed by TI on 12/21/2010

The number one thing to understand about acoustic pickups is that they won't sound as good as your guitar does when it's doing what it's meant to do- which is play acoustically! Thinking that you will find something that recreates your acoustic sound perfectly is a dragon chasing proposition. That said, you can still get good sound when you plug in. It's just important to focus on the plugged in sound and not perfectly recreating the acoustic sound cuz it ain't happening. The Rare Earth humbucker does very well at giving me an acoustic sound that is small show worthy. It is well balanced and even sounds good plugged straight into a PA of reasonable quality, though, I wouldn't go out without my preamp there to fill in the sound if the PA (or sound guy) sucks. The on board volume is nice, but it's almost always at 10. It's also important that I can remove it when we're not playing a show. The main drawback is that having the pickup mounted in the soundhole does affect the natural, unplugged acoustic tone of your guitar- something I'm not willing to permanently compromise on my 1973 Mossman. So I won't be doing the end pin install. And even though it sounds good, I'll still be using high end mics for recording. All in all, it's a great product and worth the money.
