I was looking to replace the tuning keys on my telecaster that had come with standard tuning keys. I was skeptical of whether or not the vintage keys would fit my tele so I called musicians friend tech support. The girl who took my call assured me that the keys would fit. When I tried to install the vintage keys on my tele I had no luck. The eyelets fall through the holes. I'm not saying these are bad keys, I'm just letting you know they won't fit the holes drilled for the standard tuning keys.

They give my Strat project that vintage look and feel.
        Same parts on my Jaguar.
For use on a standard strat: use Kluson 10mm bushings and drill the screw holes on the back of the headstock.

First off, you can't find these at any old music store, so save yourself the trouble and order them online now.

Second, the grooves for the string were shallower than what they replaced, so stringing the guitar was more difficult with these. However, once the strings are tight, everything is fine.

Comments about Fender Vintage-Style Strat/Tele Machine Heads Set of 6:

I love these tuners. They look cool, they hold tune well. I would not upgrade to these for any guitar that doesn't already have them. Use these for repair/replacement only if you have a guitar that comes with these machines (Eric Clapton, 50s reissue strats). American standards, deluxe and mexican strats all use a different mounting method and have a different peg hole size which is why they provide you with those bushings. If you use these to replace the stock Ping tuners you must be able to drill and tap the machine screw mounting holes. The bushings do not set tight in the existing tuning machine peg hole. I used a drop of super glue to hold the bushings in place to the head. I did use these to make a black MN MIM strat look more like Eric's blackie, so it is not impossible to use them, just know you will have to drill new screw holes and tap them for mounting. Be very careful to not drill all the way through the head and with brass mounting screws. There are no extra screws. It is very easy to bur the brass phillip screw heads beyond use. After your holes are drilled use a pick guard screw to thread hole, then use the provided mounting screw for the tuning machine. I drilled and tapped holes to install one machine at a time to more easily manage alignment of machines from one to the other. After I was done it looked factory issue and worked the same. I put a drop of oil between the peg and bushing before stringing to ease peg binding against the bushing.

                Vintage machine head fitment

Comments about Fender Vintage-Style Strat/Tele Machine Heads Set of 6:

The first thing I want to cover is fitment. After reading previous reviews, I called Fender support and found out for these to replacement the Fender Modern keys you need to replace the bushings with oversize 10 mm. Recommended source Steward-Macdonald. I got the busings, but added one round of masking tape for tighter fitment. Worked Great!! Vintage slotted keys look great and so easy to re-restring.

i have been looking at these only to replace the original "gold plated" hardware on a rare custom MIJ 90's tele that have the typical oxidation. going to chrome just for the look to match the white and pearl inlay on the guitar.( will keep and save the gold for collecter value)i would like to make a comment to a previous review however. all tele's that i know of at least before the 1970's all were top loaded "definatly vintage stuff" which i actually prefer to the current style i have on my american standards. very nice piece this is.

These tuners are only for pegheads that have pressfit bushings not the nut kind. Thats why the other guys had problems because they have non old guitars only vintage and reissues would have the holes to fit these. Hope i was of some help

these tuners are only for vintage diameter holes not modern ones thats why the other guys had problems with theirs. These are very very good tuners. vintage pegheads have press fit bushings the newer ones have nut-style bushings and are bigger than the old ones. Hope I was of some help.
