Overview

The Fender '65 Deluxe Reverb Combo Amp has a sound big enough to cut through the muddiest mix, but it's small enough to turn up make the most of natural tube distortion in small clubs. This makes it the perfect studio amp, as well. It's a resurrection of a classic vintage tone monster, and its current iteration is used by many big-name bands, such as Flogging Molly, O.A.R. and Maroon 5. Crank up this faithful, U.S.-made reissue for your daily requirement of fat Fender tone. Delivers 22W through a 12" speaker. Features two channels (normal, vibrato), all-tube circuitry, tube vibrato, tube spring reverb, Blackface cosmetics and two-button footswitch to control the reverb and vibrato effects.

Designed to sound as close to the original as possible, the ˜65 Reissues are assembled in Corona, California and feature Jensen speakers (One C12K for the Deluxe and two C12Ks for the Twin, four P10Rs for the Super and one C10R for the Princeton), Schumacher transformers, traditional tremolo and tube-driven reverb to create that classic, "Blackface" sound so many players desire. They do have PCBs (Printed Circuit Boards), as opposed to the original's "hand-wired" circuitry, but the components (capacitors and resistors) are the same values as amps from that period. They also have hand-wired tube sockets and other parts for added strength.

Tonal Characteristics: Bright, scooped midrange that is known as the "Blackface" sound, pronounced "Wine Glass" highs from the Jensen speakers and a slightly more polite power amp for crystal cleans that can also be cranked for great overdriven tones.

Who's it for: Players that love the original versions but are priced out of owning vintage amps, blues players, country players, rock players, guitarists trying to get classic "Blackface" sounds (a la Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, John Mayer), American-made amp enthusiasts, traditionalists, avid Fender collectors.

This amp is so amazing, I'm giving it 5 stars even though I had a couple issues (both fixable).

First: There is a service bulletin about the tremelo. Mine sounded like a motorboat. A tech fixed it under warranty. No charge.

Second: Unless your amp is virtually silent at idle (as it should be), chances are there are some bad pre amp tubes. I was hearing an annoying hiss in both channels and a bad hum in the reverb. Got on the inter- webs and looked for suggestions - Result -put Stevie Ray's fave 5751 in V1 and V2 (This immediately got rid of the "too bright" sound and warmed the overall tone.)

Stuck balanced NOS Mullard 12AT7s in V3 (reverb driver) and V6 (Phase Inverter).
Also replaced V4 (reverb return) with a better version of what was in there. Didn't touch V5. Also didn't touch power tubes or rectifier.

The first time I played this thing with the new tubes I wanted to weep. Every bit as delicious as my Silver Face Princeton. And just as quiet at idle. It has taken it's rightful place as my favorite amp.

There are a lot of haters out there who want to mud mouth anything with a PCB - I guess because the originals were point to point hand wired... but this thing is unreal sounding. And, if the circuit board ever does take a dump after the warrant expires, I will have somebody do a PTP hand wire on it and I guess it will be same as the original then.

So, yeah, it took a little effort to get this thing where I wanted but I have been handsomely rewarded. I will try to find a way to take this one with me when I go. LoL.

I really don't like to write a negative review since I've been playing Fender products for over 8 years and love that Fender tone, but I feel that I need to give some perspective to any pro or semi-pro players out there that are considering this amp.

I readily admit that I may have a lemon on my hands, so please keep that in mind too. I am a professional recording and gigging guitarist. I've used this amp three nights a week pretty much every week since I bought it in October of 2013, as well as in the studio, recording for various clients. The amp has a really cool tone and takes pedals well, however, it broke down on me three months after I bought it, right during a gig. I had it fixed (to Fender's credit they have a great warranty) and it's done well for a few months until recently on a recording session it again started having problems. As a professional, you depend on your gear and need it to be consistent. Unfortunately I don't think I can rely on this amp anymore.

I love the Fender tone, but just don't like the reliability of this particular product.

Comments about Fender Vintage Reissue '65 Deluxe Reverb Guitar Combo Amp:

I've owned the DRRI combo for over a year now and have had NO problems! My guitars are Gibson Les Paul Elegant, Fender Thinline and Tele. I liked the combo so much, I bought the head! Using a Mesa Lonestar 23 open back 1X12 and a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe 1X12 closed back that I put a Celestion Gold into. Sold my Mesa Mark V and now gig with the 65 DRRI. It's just a fun amp to play! After hearing mine, the other guitarist bought one too.

Since this is such an accurate reissue, there is a rattle that you get when playing. Also, this amp breaks easily. Had multiple problems with the amp in less than a year.

This amp is everything I heard it was, amazing cleans and works great with pedals. However, getting it was a hassle and repeated missinformation about where it was coming from and when it would arrive at my local GC.

Comments about Fender Vintage Reissue '65 Deluxe Reverb Guitar Combo Amp:

This is a fantastic sounding amp, when it works. I bought mine as an open box unit. Visually, there was nothing wrong with it, and it functioned perfectly for the first couple of months. Just long enough where it was too late to exchange it once problems became apparent. The amp started losing volume, and began exhibiting all the signs of burned out tubes. Fender retubed the amp under their 90-day tube warranty. Unfortunately, after about a month, the same problem returned, and with a horrible ringing noise, to boot. Fender is now replacing the tube sockets, as at least one of them has been found to be faulty. However, the tubes, themselves are no longer covered. Considering that their repair facility takes 6 weeks to get the amp back to you, this amp has now spent almost as much time in the shop as it has in my house, and I haven't had a chance to gig it, at all. Huge disappointment.

I was so blown away with the 600 "Champ" amp I purchased a couple months ago, I decided to try the "Deluxe Reverb" @ Guitar Center. Picked out a nice standard Tele, turned the volume up to 3, gradually turned the bass & treble up about half way, the 'verb up to 2 1/2- perfect! It's going to be just right for most of the gigs I do, I have a Blues Deluxe for bigger venues. Sure, you can mod the hell out of these amps, but that Fender Sparkle is there in Spades, I've been playing thru them for over 50 years in niteclubs, bars, recording studios, etc. The really cool thing is the Deluxe Reverb sounds just like my Super Reverb in a slightly smaller package- In other words, if you can't dig this amp, you got a hole in your soul!

Sounds great with both my strat and les paul. Didn't have to fiddle around long to get the sound I wanted. I little bit brittle and harsh if you're not careful with the treble knob. Remember to use the tone knob on your guitars! Didn't sound great with my higher gain plexitone pedal but worked well with the fulltone ocd.
