This is a decent Ukulele for the price. It has a nice bright tone and is great for beginners. One thing that I am a little confused about though. The 2nd string (C in C Standard Tuning) is nickel wound while the rest are nylon. Now when I first bought this ukuelele it didn't bother me, but after a few days of playing it started to unwind due to the fact that when you first get this you have to crank up the strings to get it to the high notes the strings are tuned to. So, just note, you will more than likely want to replace this string or will have to soon after purchasing.

This probably applies to models fabricated in late 2011 or early 2012, since all the old reviews are good. I bought the first instrument and, after a week or so, found out that one of the tuning pegs was getting harder and harder to turn. I couldn't tighten one of the strings. Went back to GC and they happily changed it for me. I stopped using it for a couple of days and when I wanted to play again I found that the glue at the neck gave off, and the arm was partially separated from the body in a very grotesque manner. Again, went back to GC and they asked me to contact Fender directly, since I had a guarantee on it. In the meantime, I bought another one. The sound you get from these is very smooth and relaxing, so I decided to continue with this model. As I was tuning it, I realized that one of the pegs was getting stuck again! I changed the pegs from the broken one, which had no problems with them, to the new one. I found out that one of the bores through which you pass the peg cylinder was slightly off, creating friction on the cylinder and preventing the peg from turning. This actually pushed the tuning lever out of the metal case. I brought it back one last time to the store and the guys told me other customers had been having problems as well, and they suggested other instruments for just a little extra. Turns out it was worth it. So, if you have an extra 20 in your wallet, go for a better instrument.

So I was initially taken with the fender headstock and then after changing out the strings for nalgut strings and a week of letting them stretch out it is consistent and has a nice tone.

Bought this for my daughter as a step up from $40 beginners model. She's very happy with the sound and playability. We tried several others in the same price, as well as a few in the $250 range and this one had the best tone and best projection.

I know how to play the guitar a little but I'm just learning the ukulele. This Fender is very nice quality for the price point and I can even make it sound beautiful!

        Great value and sound!

        By Aaron P

        from MD

Comments about Fender Ukulele Hau oli Mahogany Tenor Ukulele:

I bought this ukulele about 4 months ago. I had been playing on my friends cheap ukulele for about a year. When i got this ukulele i was first struck by the design of it, it looks great! I can't tell you about the string that it can with because i immediately put on a set of aquila nyl-gut strings. I really like those strings and would recommend that you use them on this ukulele. Now the problem people had with tuning is not a problem for me. When i put the new strings on it went slightly out of tune for about a week then after that the string settled in and it would always be in tune for me (i would occasionally have to correct the C string but that was very rare.) So for overall value and sound this is one of the best out there, Fender did a great job just needs a new set of strings and you're set! Hope this helps.

I have played the acoustic and electric guitars for over 25 years, and wanted to try the ukulele. This is an excellent instrument, easy to play and works well for a guitar player transitioning to the ukulele. And you get exceptional Fender quality! I highly recomment this instrument.

A Tidbit of Versatility, a handfull of fun

        By Alvin Sugar

        from Carrollton, Texas

Comments about Fender Ukulele Hau oli Mahogany Tenor Ukulele:

The Fender Tenor Ukulele: What I have read about folks complaints on Fender string selection appears to be true. The wound C string appears to be too soft for the application, and is totally wrong in philosophy by forcing user to play the instrument like a Ukulele i.e. Strumming only. Setting the instrument up with Baritone Uke Strings by Martin (D G B E) perked the little Fender up to be my kind of instrument. Dropping the D string to C for my style of Jazz, it now handles Flamenco, folk, Country Western, popular, and Classical well for a feisty little dwarf. Oh yes, my first gig will be playing Hawaiian music using steel guitar tactics. It keeps the customers happy! The quality is excellent, and the git bag that is included is very functional, especially when traveling about to different groups. My purpose of purchasing it was to get the smallest practical instrument, now that my ability to play a bass no longer exists because of aging. In fact my ۡ̏bassۡݕ_ is now a 5 string Fender Squire that I use to bolster up the Carrollton Jammers. As you can tell I am very satisfied with my investment; that is a natural for playing a Pentatonic style of accompaniment.

Fender Ukulele Hau oli Mahogany Tenor Ukulele

        By Jay d.

        from San Diego, Ca

Comments about Fender Ukulele Hau oli Mahogany Tenor Ukulele:

Being an Island boy, my family wondered why I decided to buy a tenor uke from Fender. It is because Fendy has always high quality products thats easy on the wallet. When I first bought this item, the tunning was difficult and the C string was nickel. (Which was odd to me). But as soon as the strings settled and tuned again, the sound was beautiful. I do not recommend this uke for beginners. (They should learn on cheap sopranos). Honestly this uke draws a lot of attention to traditional island people and becomes the envy of friends. The best bang for buck and it's beautiful uke.
