I must admit, I bought this with the intention of doing a bunch of modification. The Lake Placid blue is just an amazing color but I never see it in stores so I had to special order it. The first one came in with a big gouge in the finish, sent it back, the second one was OK. I played the stock setup for about a half hour, the electronics are not horrible but certainly not pro quality. I replaced the pickups with Seymour Duncan vintage alnico's, junked the white pick guard for a black pearl one and eliminated one of the tone knobs so now it has one volume and one tone, the top knob on strats always gets in my way when playing and I really like this change. Fender doesn't seem to do any setup these days, the truss rod wasn't even snugged down, just left loose. The action and intonation were in the ballpark but needed work. I had a pro setup done and now it's a great guitar, looks way better with the black pick guard. I've seen guys play these in stock condition and sound good, I just wanted to try out these mods and I must say, it worked better than I expected.
I have been playing guitar for 8 years. I hav owned this guitar since 2004. Overall, this is a good guitar. Neck feels really nice and fast with the rosewood. It doesn't stay in tune very well. My strap peg stripped and had to be replaced with a longer bolt. The pickups are a little weak. My tone and volume knobs stripped out and had to be replaced. Good guitar. Not recommended for an advanced guitar player. Recommended for a beginner.
Just bought the 2012 Mex Strat and it sounds great. Very nice sound for the money. The standard Strat handles good, even for my slightly small hands. I had an old used Squire so this sounds like a dream. I am 66 years young and learning to play the Blues. I would highly recommend this guitar to anyone wanting a great sound, without paying a high price for a American made Strat. Like I read in another comment you could always change out the pickups. I would not recommend changing out the pickups, sounds well enough to me.
I purchased a used Made in Mexico strat from 2002. And I was blown away. I have always played shred guitars like Jackson,Esp, Ibanez ect. but I am now a fender purist. I switched out the bridge pickup with a JB junior and that took care of the feedback you get when using high gain. I play
OK. To cut to the chase, have had numerous Strats over the years. Several Mexican ones (mostly from the 90's), an American Standard, even a Korean and Japanese one. Was looking for "that sound". Many chase it, but few find it. Long story short, purchased my most recent one, a 2010 Mexican Strat, did not even play it prior, and am shocked at how great it sounds! Had the notion that I was going to change out the pickups, must have gotten a good one from the batch! Has such great sound, that is usable! And, the playability is outstanding! This one is the Strat I have been looking for! This new crop is the best!
Ive had my MIM Strat for four years. I bought it used, and I haven't looked back! The neck is very comfortable and easy to play, especially on the rosewood fretboard. Provides that classic strat sound that everyone looks for in a SSS guitar. The guitar is very light, and stays in tune very well. You can achieve sounds very close to that of Hendrix all the way to good ol'e SRV. I hear some complaints about the hum from the pickups, but the 2 and 4 positions cancel that very much. Some may want to change the pickups for their taste, but mine seem very nice just as is. Play before you buy to make sure (maple and rosewood ARE different). Beginners and seasoned pros alike, you simply cannot go wrong with the Stratocaster!
