Best Bass For the Money

By

from Detroit, Michigan

Comments about Fender Standard Jazz Bass:

I purchased a slightly used Fender Standard(Made In Mexico) Jazz Bass with a rosewood fingerboard. Over a few months I made some upgrades to it. First, I replaced the pickups with Bartolini passive pichups, perfect replacements with no visible pole pieces. They put out just as much volume as the originals, but are quieter electronically, with no buzz. I also replaced the bridge with an ABM bridge. I like to sometimes use the palm of my hand to mute the strings when I use a guitar pick and this bridge is real flat and comfortable for that. Just for looks, I had a custom made white pearloid pickguard made to fit from a pattern from the original. I also added quick release strap locks and a set of flatwound strings. This bass is real fine and suits my needs perfectly. The Gloss Black finish is good quality and I like the feel of the neck. At one point I was looking at the Highway One basses that are made in America, but the necks looked identicle to the Mexican necks. I'm wondering if they are the same necks with the basses just assembled in the USA instead of Mexico. I think that a lot of working musicians buy the MIM basses if they are on a tight budget. The additions I made were really out of my personal choice rather than out of absolute neccesity. I think that the Fender Standard Jazz Bass is a fine instrument. You can't go wrong for the money and if you do add a few upgrades later, it only becomes better. I also purchased a hard shell molded case from Guitar Center. It's my only bass and serves the purpose well.

Comments about Fender Standard Jazz Bass:

I just acquired a 90's model Fender Standard Jazz Bass. I must say I am impressed. I've played bass for 23 years with Several different brands of bass and my Fender steps on them all. It has just what I need in a bass with -out all kinds of froofraw! I'm completely satisfied with my Fender.

Great!

By

from Peoria, IL

Comments about Fender Standard Jazz Bass:

So, I've actually had this for awhile and just remembered to write a review. Overall, this is one of the three best basses I've ever played. I believe it ties with the Epiphone Viola Bass VS, in my humble opinion. I use this currently to play all the songs my band and I play, but one thing I will digress is that this bass is almost too versatile, and really, in my opinion, can't QUITE get the right sound for Beatles songs, which is a good portion of what my band and I do. (Thus my need for the Epiphone Viola Bass) Anyway, I played this for about 3 months before I was able to afford switching out the strings to D'Addario Chrome Flatwounds. The roundwounds are okay if you like a lot of grip and a sound more fitting to the Who, but I prefer flatwounds because they give the bass a really vintage 60's feel and sound. So far I haven't found anything wrong with this bass, except that mine won't go to anything below standard tuning without making really gnarsty sounds at the spot where the neck is attached, but that's not the style of bass as it is just mine. Overall, probably one of your best choices for basses if you're looking for a good, well-rounded bass guitar capable of playing most music, and not overpriced, either!

Awesome bass for an awesome price!

By

from Weldon Spring, Missouri

Comments about Fender Standard Jazz Bass:

The price on this bass is outstanding for a bass of this quality. I have played bass for a few years, and I've bought and played many other basses of different prices and brands. This bass always wins. I've owned this bass for two years and it still plays as well today as it did the day I bought it. It still looks new too. This bass has been dropped and knocked over a few times (in its case) and looks and sounds fine. The weight is balanced well and takes no effort to support it while standing. The finish has held up well too. This is a good bass for beginners, regular players, and even professional musicians.

Tremendous value, great addition.

By

Comments about Fender Standard Jazz Bass:

Just picked it up my sunburst Jazz today. I played it at the store but didn't appreciate how good the neck was. It is a true Jazz bass neck, slim, easy to hold and fast. The pickups are powerful. Had to turn down all the volume settings from when I played my Precision through it. Finish is great and workmanship is very good. I'm happy with it.

Nice Bass for the money

By

from Worcester, MA

Comments about Fender Standard Jazz Bass:

I've been a professional drummer for over 25 years. Recently, I thought I'd like to pick up a bass and take some lessons. My father owned a music store and was a Fender dealer back in the 70's and 80's. Back then, I recall all Fender instruments being American made. As a kid, I remember all those shiney new fender guitars and basses at Dad's shop and I remember getting scolded for playing with them in my early teens. Anyway, when I decided to start bass, I knew I wanted a fender jazz. I went down to my local GC and tried out both the MIA and the MIM. I felt the sound quality was comparable on both models. You can also see the differences in laquer, paint, etc. Not being a guitar expert, past experience has taught me enough to understand neck quality, fit and finish, intonation, etc.. Money not being a real issue either, (I could afford to buy either model) I decided to grab the MIM model. It needed a complete setup as expected. Once done , I feel I made the correct purchase. Had I been a seasoned player, I may have gone with the MIA. Bottom line. The MIM is a fine quality instrument. My advise is to try them both, side by side and decide for yourself. The free hard case upgrade didn't hurt either. Cheers!

BEST BIRTHDAY GIFT EVER

By

from Hicksville, NY

Comments about Fender Standard Jazz Bass:

I got this as a birthday gift yesterday, and it's the best gift I have ever gotten! It plays like butter, if that's a usable simile XD It has the best tone, best feel, and best looks of any bass I have ever seen. My favorite settings are to put the Neck Pickup on full, Bridge pickup 3/4 of a turn, and the tone on full. On the Amp, put the Bass on 4, Mids on 6, and the Treble on 8. These are Geddy Lee's settings and with these settings, the bass sounds even better! I would recommend an Acoustic Amp to use with this Bass.

Back On Bass

By

from Cleveland, Ohio

Comments about Fender Standard Jazz Bass:

After years of not playing Bass I decided to pick it back up. I've been playing a lot of Acoustic music and decided to play Bass again too. I bought the Fender Jazz because I always liked Fender Basses. I'm glad I decided to get the Jazz Bass because I have always liked the sound of them even though I used to play a Precision Bass. The Jazz Bass sounds great and fits my needs. I had my tech set it up for me and it plays great. The price was good and the quality is decent. If you're looking to buy your first Fender Bass I would recommend this one,it's affordable and plays well. I would suggest you ask your salesman to have it set up before you buy it because the truss rod will probably have to be tightened and the action adjusted. I always have the tech I've been using set all my instruments up after I get them.

Dream bass

By

from Gilbert AZ

Comments about Fender Standard Jazz Bass:

This is the most amazing bass I've ever played. the only problem I've had at all with it is that the low E saddle slipped and I had to have it fixed. (on a side note guitar center fixed it for free and were more helpful than I could have hoped. If I was not a dedicated guitar center buyer before I am now) This bass plays like absolute butter. It has the tone that I've come to expect from a fender instrument, with a price tag closer to a squire. Absolutely the best money I've ever spent
