What I have been waiting for...

Comments about Fender Special Edition Stratocaster HSS Noir:

As soon as I saw a quick blurb about these Special Edition Noir instruments from the 2017 NAMM show, my interest was immediately piqued. I have to start this review with the obvious disclosure that this line of instruments (there is a Telecaster and Precision Bass as well) are MIM, but to me that is not the end of the world since they still carry the Fender name, and these have a pretty decent price point without going flat broke. I purchased both the Stratocaster and the Precision bass, but will concentrate on the guitar for this review.

I personally love the look of all black with the red lining around the pick guard and red lettering on the black head stock. A nice little break from the traditional lettering, so kudos to Fender for taking some cosmetic risks if you will, thus the name "Noir" for this line of instruments. As for the sound, what can I say other than I cannot find a huge difference in this guitar and my Made in the U.S.A Fender Strat. The pickups are bereft of any noticeable buzz noise, and of course provide the full range of tones expected with a Stratocaster. In other words, it screams like a banshee and hums like a bird when called for! As an entry point for those who may be new or curious to the "classic" Fender instruments, I think this line is a great jump off point before plunking down thousands of dollars, and I will recommend to both novices and experienced players alike. As for the set up, it was okay as received however I did need to tweak the intonation ever so slightly. The strings were brand new and you could tell few fingers had actually touched this guitar. All in all I am pleased with this purchase, and believe as stated before that for less than $700 this is a fine instrument in the Fender tradition, with a new look that will undoubtedly turn off traditionalists, but may appeal to those of who like our instruments dark like our coffee!

Comments about Fender Special Edition Stratocaster HSS Noir:

When saw it I thought is was gimmicky and just another dart thrown by Fender. I had time to kill at GC to I played around with it. Started to like it so much I wondered how it would stack up to more expensive models. The local Luthier who is one of the best players I know sat down with me and we started to play it against Fender Elite and others between 1-2k. It went toe to toe with them if not beating them. The tones are GREAT and versatile. The HSS gives you all type of options. The neck is very comfortable. The set up did suck. I have to adjust the bridge, neck but once I did it was more than I thought for such a low price. I've got two other strats but this one is different. Warmer and thicker in tone. Fantastic for Classic rock and blues. Not sure what pickups are used but I think they are hotter than norm which is why they give a warmer tone. Fantastic guitar and not just for the money.
