Overview

We've teamed up with Fender to bring you another great-sounding, unique one-off bass loaded with premium features. The exclusive Deluxe PJ Bass has a Precision Bass body with the neck of a 70s Jazz Bass. It features the appointments you've come to love about most Fender instruments like an alder body, urethane finish, maple fingerboard and a Fender high mass bass bridge. Perhaps the most interesting feature aside from the mash-up of P Bass body and J Bass neck is the combination of Precision and Jazz Bass pickups. With this combo you get the best of both worlds. The growl of the passive J Bass bridge pickup blends perfectly with the passive P Bass split single coil neck pickup with the help of the volume and tone controls.

Features
  • Precision Bass body with Maple 70' Jazz Bass neck
  • Sea Foam Pearl color
  • Alder body with urethane finish
  • Urethane body finish
  • Gloss urethane neck finish
  • Synthetic bone nut
  • Maple fingerboard
  • 20 Frets
  • Black block inlays
  • 34 Scale
  • Chrome hardware
  • 3Ply parchment pickguard
  • Fender high mass bass bridge
  • Standard open gear tuning machines
  • Passive Fender Precision split single-coil w/ passive Jazz Bass pickup in the bridge position

I bought this nearly a month ago with the expectations set forth by the other reviews, intending to use this as a backup. I've always been a much bigger fan of Fender's Jazz Bass than anything with Precision in the name. This. Sounds. Amazing! I have demoted my regular Jazz to backup just to get a chance to play this on more of my band's songs! The tone versatility, the feel, everything about this bass says: "make me your go-to bass guitar for life." I've read a lot of complaints about having to shave off fret ends; I have had no such problems, all frets are flush with the neck. The only issue I've had is some rattling along all four strings; nothing a quick and easy saddle adjustment couldn't fix.

Flat out Coolest VIntage vibe bass out there

By MANISCALCO MIKE

from Clifton NJ

Comments about Fender Special Edition Deluxe PJ Bass:

Ok, Sea Foam Pearl, black blocks and black binding, it is a thing of beauty to behold! It has a finished fingerboard and neck, but this thing is as quick as lightning. Vintage split coils in the mid and a Noiseless vintage stacked single at the bridge...it sounds as good as it looks and feels. This is the perfect bass! If I had to find one thing to complain about it would be that the bridge pup is not nearly as loud as the mid pup...but when you play them both dimed it is sonic bliss, when you solo the P pups it is everything you love about a vintage woody P-bass tone with some growl to her, solo the bridge pup and you get a clear articulated J sound with absolutely no noise at all...again this bass gets 5 stars on looks, build, playability and tone...Fender did this right.

Comments about Fender Special Edition Deluxe PJ Bass:

I am happy with this bass now. When it first came in to GC after my order it had some serious fret sprout which was not acceptable and would have been very uncomfortable. The fret edges were protruding significantly all along the fret board. I actually ordered another of the same model first and it came in the same way even worse. I returned the first one and ordered this one. It came in with similar fret sprout problems only not quite as severe. The guys at GC were very supportive and filed a warranty repair request with Fender to fix the problem. It was promptly approved and my local tech at GC did a superb job in dressing the fret edges. I am very pleased with it now and have no regrets. I love the look and it is a pleasure to play. The P/J combination of pickups allows for a lot of tone versatility. I also like the fact that is is passive vs active.

Comments about Fender Special Edition Deluxe PJ Bass:

I've never had great luck with MIM Fender basses in the past. At best they were good, and at worst they were not up to the newer Squier standards.

This bass has changed my perception on that by quite a bit. I was going after an MIA standard P when this caught my eye. No, it wasn't the sea foam color. I'm not actually a huge fan; but don't hate it either. I do like a maple fret board, but wasn't really looking for the block markers either.

No, what caught me was the way it played and the way it sounded. It was probably the fourth or fifth bass I auditioned that day; and eventually played about fifteen. Perhaps if the local GC would have had more stock, I would have played a few more. I just kept coming back to this again and again. I finally just put it on a stand and started to compare everything else back to this. I played a few Schecter, a couple of MM and Sterlings, even VM Squiers. This bass just did it all for me with tonal options that were on par with the similar MIM active PJ. In the end, the quality won me out.

To say my MIJ Geddy Lee is getting lonely is quite a compliment for this bass. That has always been my favorite; and may be again. However, I keep picking up the sea foam time and time again while the GL sits cuckolded.

If nothing else, give it a try. It may not be the exact fit for you, but it is at least worthy of an extended audition.

Comments about Fender Special Edition Deluxe PJ Bass:

This is a really GREAT bass - it is now my #1 out of 20 or more that I own. The appearance is stunning - maple with Seafoam Green and the finish is perfect. The neck is nice and slim - just what I like, and easy to play.

The combination of the solid P sound that fits everywhere, with the ability to add a little growl from the bridge pickup is perfect. The bridge pickup COULD be a little hotter, but not a big deal.

While it had a nice sound with the factory rounds, I put some T.I. Jazz Flats on it, and the sound is now just so perfect - solid and punchy without any zinginness or finger noise. It is perfect for our Classic Rock and Blues.

My ONLY complaint is that the fret ends are a little rough - Not as nice as my 2 MIA Fenders - but I guess that this is to be expected at the lower price. Not a deal-breaker.

YES - I am really pleased I bought this bass, it is going to get a lot of use, and everyone comments on how pretty it is.

Comments about Fender Special Edition Deluxe PJ Bass:

Just got one of these as a birthday present from my wife. How did she know to get me this particular bass? Because every time I went to my local Guitar Center, I would try as many basses as I could and always came back to this one. I prefer it over many of the American Fender basses, which is saying something. I absolutely love how it feels to play, and it has a really versatile sound with the PJ setup. If you are iffy about the color, by the way, the pictures do not do the seafoam pearl finish justice - it looks stunning. For this feel, sound, and visual impact it's a great price.

Reading other comments, I see that some people have had some issues with the setup and the frets needing to be smoothed a bit. I have had neither of those issues with mine, but if mine did have those issues I would be so willing to have those repairs done - this bass is worth the trouble.

This is only the 3rd bass I've ever owned (I'm relatively new to bass), but I can definitely see myself being very happy for a long time with only this bass. For the foreseeable future, the hunt is over.

        Had to add this info...

        By George Covetskie

        from North Carolina

Comments about Fender Special Edition Deluxe PJ Bass:

I have a previous review I made while enjoying this bass while it was new. Since then, I had time to find some things that troubled me. Good thing is, the only 1 thing that seemed to give me trouble at times was the P-Pickup. The Noiseless Jazz pickup was great, but noticed I could not use the P-Pickup by itself. It was just way too bassy. I replaced it with the Fender 62 reissue and WOW! I mean WOW! The tone is kind of woody and still pbass growl and clean clear punch. IF you have this bass, CHANGE THE P Pickup to something of your liking. This bass is now my favorite and I am not going to sell this this or trade it. I learned my lesson before doing that and not getting what it was worth and loosing all I loved about it. I can use this bass now for just about any kind of music and record with great sound. I recommend this one to any player. IF you want to hear this bass BEFORE the changed pickup and in a live show, go to www.wildrosesandhorses.com check out OUR MUSIC then scroll to Live recordings. The 1st tune Hank did it this, way and tequila sunrise has this bass on it.

Comments about Fender Special Edition Deluxe PJ Bass:

Overall, this is a very nice instrument. I really like the fast neck, and clean sounds. As most people have pointed out, expect to either grind the frets yourself or have them professionally dressed. They are just way too rough out of the box. Also, I agree with the other reviews that suggest that the J pickup is a bit weak. It sounds okay, but the P pickup is clearly much louder. All that aside, I love the look of the seafoam. It's a great instrument which is apparently selling like crazy. I think that's why the price was raised by $100 recently.
