This is a beautiful guitar which sounds terrific. The Seymour Duncans are voice quite brightly, so in single coil mode, you get a real twangy tele sound (not exactly like a vintage tele); in full humbucking mode, these are seriously dangerous. They sound much like my Les Paul, but brighter. The frets needed work on arrival: a couple of high ones which meant the action was set needlessly high. Set up tech fixed that. In addition, the rosewood fingerboard was over "oiled," which left a residue on my finger until I worked it out. The set screws on the bridges are quite high and are bit uncomfortable while palm/bridge muting. No biggy, though. I change the tuners for Schaller/Fender locking tuners (tech did it, some drilling needed), so it's pretty much an "American" tele now. If you like the tele shape and a bright sound, which darkens up nicely with the tone controls and humbuckers, go for it!

I used to be a Gibson guy but have slowly switched to Fender. I bought this Spalted maple because of the sound with the Duncans. The first one came in and the finish was all scratched. It was under the finish so it was not damage. Just bad work. The second one came in and the finish was better. However the 2nd fret was damaged in shipping. So had that repaired. I gigged it last night for the first time. I had noticed that the tone knob, also the coil splitter had no tension on it. You could spin it just by a slight bump. Before the first set was over it was fuzzing out. I guess the tension on the contacts is weak. I wish I had not bought it. So Out of two they are both junk to me. Buy a U.S. made tele or get a cheap one and Mod it. To top it all off my BRAND NEW JA-90 Tele back-up I took quit also. The bridge pup quit working. That is another story. Of the last four fender guitars I have bought they all have had problems. They have all been at the shop more then at my house. I doubt this will be published here but that is my experience.

smokin tele

By Dr.Soul69

Comments about Fender Special Edition Custom Telecaster Spalted Maple HH Electric Guitar:

I bought one of these 2 months ago and it is incredible. The set neck helps this monster generate serious sustain. The seymour duncans(not licensed by)go from smooth clean jazz to smoking hard rock to johnny cash country with the help of the push-pull toggle on the tone knob. The versitility is unbelievable. The spalted maple finish on mine is flawless and the walnut body makes the mids sing. I play blues(traditional and modern) with a little rock thrown in for good measure. I have owned just about every make and model of guitar known to man and this the one. I don't even throw this bad boy through any pedals. The sound is right on the money. I have been playing for 28 years and I have yet to find a more versatile instrument. My other guitars are jealous because I always reach for this one. I would not be afraid to gig with this baby. I hope that Fender experiments with the set neck in their American line. And these pick-ups break you out of the Fender tele sound and allow you to get where you want to be without effects.

Awesome

Comments about Fender Special Edition Custom Telecaster Spalted Maple HH Electric Guitar:

I have had this guitar for about a month now, and am loving every bit of it. Some of these reviews have talked about the frets needing work and all that jazz, but mine was in perfect shape... no work needed. The tone is awesome, the look speaks for itself. I have nothing bad to say about this guitar.

Home RUN!

By RP

Comments about Fender Special Edition Custom Telecaster Spalted Maple HH Electric Guitar:

The spalted top on the walnut body is beautiful and has plenty of sustain. Body is thinner than a regular Tele which is a plus in my book. The pickups are spot on perfect. Nice a mellow with a twang with the coil tapped (pull up on the tone knob) to thick. Very versatile sound combination. Neck is set and the jumbo frets are very comfortable. The oversized abelone inlays are a nice touch. Never really been a fan of Tele headstocks but it is what it is. Reliability: I don't gig but would have no issue playing live with it from a reliability standpoint. Summary: AWESOME guitar. My other guitars are jealous as I simply cannot put it down.

Great Axe

By Jeff Hinson

Comments about Fender Special Edition Custom Telecaster Spalted Maple HH Electric Guitar:

Great guitar in my opinion. It offers the sound of Country Twang,Blues, and Rock using the combo of pickups and tone control. The center tap xformer is perfect for twang. Although it's heavier than a standard telecaster, its a beautiful guitar and eyecatcher. The service at Evansville Guitar Center was great. Get one...hopefully it will be a "limited" edition and a prize to keep.

A lot of twang for the buck!

Comments about Fender Special Edition Custom Telecaster Spalted Maple HH Electric Guitar:

I've been looking over this guitar for several weeks and finally bought it today. I could not be happier with this instrument's quality. My local shop does some setup on all of their guitars, so I can't say how this one was out of the box. I can tell you that the jumbo frets and fretboard binding are buttery smooth, and that the SD pups absolutely scream when you want them to. The beefy neck and the fact that it is set into the body add sustain, and I really like the coil tap on the tone control - it makes a big difference in the output. I also like the ability to switch back and forth between classic fender tele twang and serious strat rock/blues tones. I own several custom built tele's and this one ranks right up their with the best of the ones I own, for half the cost. I am very happy that I added this tele to my collection it sounds and feels great, and it is stunning to look at. I think that it isn't all that often that Fender comes up with something truly new and exciting in this day and age, but this one fits the bill!

Wow Great guitar

By bmountains

Comments about Fender Special Edition Custom Telecaster Spalted Maple HH Electric Guitar:

I got mine used but, the finish is deep, crystal clear and beautiful. Mine has locking tuners (maybe a previous owner mod). They look factory and it just stays in tune. The Set neck is super cool and unusual for Fender - great tones/sustain as much as you need. The Seymores sound great, Neck is fast and I like the bigger radius as I'm used to playing a Martin for the acoustic stuff - I do alot of acoustic rock. This little tele is getting more and more use. I can't tell you how many compliments I get on this guitar. Players all want to give it a try and love it - as do I. Thanks Fender

good guitar

By EP

Comments about Fender Special Edition Custom Telecaster Spalted Maple HH Electric Guitar:

I bought a Spalted maple telecaster and had good luck in shipping and the quality is fine no problems. For the price it plays wonderful and stays in tune way better than my 68' telecaster ever did. It has beautiful grain and the craftsmanship is good. It is not a USA guitar but not much is made here anymore. Again for the price I'm happy with it.

It runs with the best of 'em

By Chris

from Denton, TX

Comments about Fender Special Edition Custom Telecaster Spalted Maple HH Electric Guitar:

I did a lot of research before I bought this guitar and I decided that I was not going to allow price to effect the buy. I played on guitars that were well over a grand and decided that this guitar was the best out of all the ones I played. My luthier took one look at it and said the quality was incredible and that if it was made in the U.S. it would be worth well over 1k. Granted it took some set up, but who cares? It compares to the Teles, Strats and LPs that are all worth well over 1k that my friends all play (and I do get comments too). Between the coil tap, thin neck, originality, and weight of this guitar, I will never trade it.
