Before you read my review, you should know that I am primarily a guitarist and this is the first bass amp I have owned. I am however an experienced musician, and I know what a good sound is. Having said that, I can tell you that I've never had trouble finding a good tone with this amp (I use a Squier affinity PJ bass with it, which I have also written an review on). The three voicing buttons make this amp quite versatile, and I especially love the bright switch. The gain control is very responsive, and turning it up will add some bite to your tone, while turning it down will mellow it out. The 4 band EQ is also quite responsive, and its easy to dial in a good tone. The drive channel adds to the versatility of the amp, and is very responsive to the master gain control. I can't say it produces the best driven sound, but it's decent and a great feature nonetheless. Can you gig with it? It's certainly loud enough. I live in a fairly large house and with the master volume at around 9 o'clock you can hear the amp from outside, so I'd say you could use it for any small venues, and it could definitely be heard over a drummer at rehearsals. If you mic it up or use the line out directly to a PA, you could even use it at some larger venues. That being said, if you want an amp solely for practice and noise is an issue, I might opt for the Rumble 25. This also the lightest amp I have ever lifted, so transporting it to rehearsals/gigs would be an absolute breeze. How an amp this light can sound this powerful blows my mind. This is a great amp for beginners or experienced players looking for an amp to practice with and bring to small gigs. You can get almost any sound out of this, from vintage to modern, smooth clean to gritty drive. It's no 200W tube amp, but it still sounds great.

I went to Guitar Player to audition this amp as I am now a Senior player with a bad back. 18 lbs sounded really good to me. The sound is "not bad"....but the low notes were undefined and not up to my standards. I tried the Rumble 100 and it blew me away. The 100 is only 4 lbs heavier. For a meer $100 more you get a 12 inch Eminence Speaker(which makes a HUGE difference), an effects loop, and of course 60 more watts. The larger cabinet seems to have been engineered just right for that speaker....as it sounds deep and full at the volume I need....which at 1/4 volume drives a 20 piece Big Band. So FYI...before you pull the trigger on the 40, think twice about the 100......

Comments about Fender Rumble 40 1x10 40W Bass Combo Amp:

For the money, it is a good purchase. It held its own without going through the board at our venue's open mic. We have a full drum kit on the backline. The tone flexibility is good, with lots of bottom end available via the electronics. I play a P-Bass, but am a low-end guy, not a slap and pop bassist. In our case, we went with as small as possible, and still get decent tone, and I was happy with the available volume. I ran the gain and the master up, but did not max them out.
If you play in a loud band, I woud go larger, but if you're on a budget, this amp can handle more than some give it credit for. If also has a lot more bottom end than the 25w 8" v3. It is not a high-end amp, but it has a great price, and after checking a ton of reviews, could not find a frequency of (import) failures.
Fender has priced it to be competitive, and it is. I would buy a larger Rumble if I needed a bigger bass amp. The light weight is such a nice change from the usual.

    I would recommend this amp.

Comments about Fender Rumble 40 1x10 40W Bass Combo Amp:

I took my bass into guitar center and plugged into every bass amp that was under $700. After playing and comparing, I found it put out the best sound and it is very modestly priced. It even has a 3 prong output receptical so I can plug it in to my PA.

Comments about Fender Rumble 40 1x10 40W Bass Combo Amp:

This amp is the best you can get for cheap. I literally can't say anything bad about it. The tones I've been dialing are fat, clean, and crisp and really bring out the best of my playing. I'm highly impressed with the sound quality of the rumble 40. Also, when I picked it up to leave the store I was blown away by how light this thing is, I geared up to lug this sucker out to the car and it was like carrying nothing practically I think it said it's 18 lbs. Anyway don't be fooled by the light weight thing baby packs some heat. Don't even question it, buy this amp, you won't regret it for years to come. Fender really set a new standard for this price range.
