Overview

The Fender Pawn Shop Special Excelsior 13W 1x15 model is undoubtedly one of the most distinctive tube combo amps in Fender history. Its brown textured vinyl covering, smartly stylish “E” grille design and bold crossed-swords front-panel badge convey a decidedly stately vibe with a marked air of cold war cool. To say nothing of its admirable tone and power. The 13-watt Excelsior elegantly encloses a single 15” speaker, with a bottom-loaded primary chassis and top-loaded control chassis for operating convenience and low noise (powered by two 6V6 output tubes and two 12AX7 preamp tubes). Distinctive features include Instrument, Microphone and Accordion inputs that each have individually optimized circuitry; tremolo circuit with speed control, bright/dark tone switch (for treble or bass emphasis), volume control and 1/4” internal speaker disconnect that lets the amp drive an external speaker enclosure. The Excelsior is perfect for playing at home, smaller gigs and studio sessions. Bring a fresh and unconventional new vibe to your playing.

Stock of the rack this amp, while a very good deal does have some limitations. I found the highs to be a bit shrill and though this would undoubtedly get better over time, the tone seemed unbalanced and erratic at different volumes. With that said I've found the main issues choking the tone and life out of this amp is the stock 15" Special Design speaker. This is certainly one of the places fender cut corners to get this amp in the price range that makes it attractive as a practice/beginner tube amp. I replace the stock speaker with a vintage JBL D-130, which along with the smaller D-120 are the best guitar amp speakers ever IMO. I also changed out the low dollar Chinese tubes with high quality vintage NOS RCA (6V6GT) and Mullard (12ax7) tubes. This amp is now on par with amp I've ever played! The tone of the amp has gone from passable and kinda cool to rivaling any high dollar amp on the market. She's super dynamic now, breaks up early with a throaty, saggy yet smooth drive with humbuckers. Plenty of twangy headroom that doesn't start to really bite until just past high noon. It's easy to accomplish a wide array of tones from SRV to AC/DC, ZZ Top and even Brian May with the mods done. The alternate inputs add even more flexibility in tonality. This amp really does have great bones and the tremolo is very usable too, but jus the same nothing to write home about. Hard to say how she'll hold up, I've only had her 6 months, but there are no issues yet and I've been pushing this one quite a bit. A good friend (a pro jock) has gigged it a number of times in some small to medium sized venues after falling in love with her after a short jam at my place. He's been overly impressed and I'm in the process of making him one like mine. I love the vintage look. Handle is solid as a rock and the fit and finish are very good, but the plastic logo on the front is super cheese X way too much! I took it off and replaced it with a vintage style classic fender amp badge. Much nicer now and the holes lined up just right. For the $$$ I would not hesitate to recommend this amp as it is stock.

Nice looks, decent sound with appropriate pedals and tweaking BUT many of these have a distressing rattle and buzz (especially on D notes). Seems to be a common problem (google excelsior rattle) and Fender hasn't seen fit to address it. Too bad, this would be a chance for them to show us all what kind of company they really are. I will keep this for a practice amp for now, but I wish it was actually worth it's low price.

Great amp

By JOHN PARRROCCINI

from Warren, PA

I don't have this model, I have the original brown one. It is a great amp and really LOUD! It has that great Fender tube tone and very cool style. It is a very sturdy piece and heavy. I bought it without playing it based on the Youtube videos that compar it to the DRRI. I plan to change the tubes to Groove Tubes to get even more tone out of it. Great amp, great value.

Pleasantly surprised by this little honker

By GEORGE PFIEFER

from Sacramento CA

This was an impulse buy when I saw it on clearance (brown) for $199. I figured, $200 for a 6V6 tube amp? Go for it! Just tried it last night with full band in our rehearsal studio and I was pretty impressed. Playing a Tele (Lollar pups) and my standard pedals: compression, a little delay, and the occasional overdrive. I found the bright switch to be a little harsh and grainy, but could be tempered with tone knobs on guitar. I thought it sounded best with the bright switch set to 'dark'. Definitely a different animal than my main amp, a real '65 Deluxe Reverb, but this thing has a nice 'honk' with some good bite and snarl. I will eventually upgrade the speaker and tubes. Even at the street price of $400 for the version with the upgraded Eminence, still a decent buy. A good little backup/rehearsal amp for me; I would have no qualms about gigging with it as well.

Great amp for small gigs

By gabriel aseron

from Oakland California

I have to say that this amp is surprisingly loud. If your on the market for your first tube amp look no further. I use this live for my church choir, and and it has plenty of clean headroom for that matter. If you are in a rock band and need clean headroom this may not be for you. But if you are in a church band, or would like to use it set home, this is the perfect amp for you.

Great little amp

By Andrew Schaefer

from Athens, GA

As a bassist that likes to play the guitar, this amp suits my purposes perfectly. The tube distortion you can get is great, and the amp can get surprisingly loud for how low the wattage is. Don't be fooled by the 13W power rating. With the tubes and the 15" speaker, this little monstrosity can throw out a surprising amount of sound. I love that it only has one real knob, being "Volume". This shows that Fender spent time making sure the tone of the amp is up to standard and that it's good enough that you don't need to mess with it. And honestly, I think it does sound great. I love the tone of this amp, and the bright/dark switch really turns this into two amps. Love this amp, and have only had other people tell me how much they love the amp as well. Fender has done a solid job on this amp, and on the pawn shop series as a whole.

What an Absolute Fabulous Amp

By Paul Zeitlin

from Annapolis, Md

I'd give it five stars, but did wish it had reverb or tone controls (besides dark/light). Honestly, I didn't care until everyone else mentioned it. As for the amp. WOW. Blown away. For the price, how can you beat it. It reminds me of the old fender tweed amps when I was growing up. I like the fact it is heavy and feels like a real piece of equipment. The sound is nice and warm and really makes the Strat mellow (on the dark setting). I get a warm fuzzy in my stomach when playing this amp. Nice headroom, It's probably about 6 o'clock before you start getting any breaking overdrive. From there, it comes quick. Finding clean tones, particularly at a higher volume is tough. But I find rolling back the volume/tone controls on the guitar works really well for that. Someone mentioned a third tone setting - in between the other two. It works and does provide a slightly different color. Blows away my VOX VT20+ modeling amp and for the price, it really is tough to beat.

Great buy!!

By ROBERT HARTMAN

from Youngstown, Ohio

Bought mine used from GC a couple of weeks ago, and have been very pleased with it. One of the things most incredible about this amp is it's low price. Being someone who has home-brewed three different tube amplifiers, and rebuilt several vintage tube radios, I can't figure how they can afford to sell these brand new for around $300! Even though this unit only has a volume control, a bright/dark swithch, and a trem speed control, you can milk quite a few different tones from her. Light clipping starts just before noon on the volume pot, 12 o'clock and a little beyond gives you a nice vintage crunch where highs and lows are easily distinguishable. If you dime the volume pot, things can get a little messy. The guitar you play thru the Excelsior will make a pretty big difference as well. It absolutely LOVES single coils. Also, being an open back cabinet, placement of the amplifier and it's surroundings will shape your tone to some degree. And the three different inputs: Guitar/Mic/Acordian can all be used as a guitar input individually, giving you further control of the voicing and gain structures. Bottom line, a great buy, and nice sounding little amp!

Great entry level tube amp

By michael moore

from Fairview, Oregon

My brother called me and told me he wanted one of these and to tell you the truth when I watched some of the You Tube videos I wasn't too impressed, then I heard one that had new tubes in it and It sounded pretty good. I got a online coupon from Guitar Center in my email and went down to try one out and after blasting the store out (no master volume)I decided to buy one. when I got the amp home I plugged it into my attenuator and started playing and testing different tubes in the amp because to me it sounded like it had too much gain going into the power tubes and was really overloading them in a way that wasn't very pleasing especially when boosting the amp with an overdrive pedal, after trying a few preamp tubes I setteled on a 12ay7/6072 in the second position, this made it sound way better and cleared it's voice up quite a bit. then I put some new GT6V6R tubes in it and the it really sounded good, I'm going to do a few more things to it like either jump or remove the Sag Resistors to tighten the amp up ( sorry all you tube rectifier guys )and make it track with my picking better and maybey replace the speaker. I think for the price this is one heck of a deal on a sleeper amp that has the potential to sound like a 50 watt Marshall when dialed in .

Nice Amp for the Money

By Steve Watson

from Manteca , Ca

It's a Nice Tube Amp for the Money , Great Tone , Wish it had spring reverb and a better adjustment for treble and base of coarse if it did it would come with a higher price ...there is one other thing ....it's wide open on the back which wouldn't be a problem except if your like me I like putting it onto a stand to get it off the floor since I've got a bad back and the on/off switch is at the bottom not to mention it sounds nicer on the stand ....well with it being open in the back there's nothing for the rear supports of the stand to rest against unlike fender's other amp's where they've installed wood across the backs...but other than that this is a nice amp and still deserves 5 stars....P.S. it makes a nice Harp Amp Also .......

Great amp!

By Daniel White

from Lincoln NE

I love the sound of this amp! If you want a department store sound from the 60's, this is it! It is not super clean like a Fender tube amp but it has a lot of "bite", a lot of people call this crunch. The only thing I don't like is where the power switch is located; you have to get behind the amp to turn it on. That doesn't work so well in my music room. This thing is built like a tank! It would not be easily damaged and it is very heavy (about 35 pounds in my estimation). I don't have any issues with harmonics like other people have reported. It does have a very low level hum when idle, hardly noticable. For the price, it is increadable! Just get it if you can!!! You will be blown away!!!
